People have forgotten the funny part about HAL,
the name came from the letters in front of each letter in IBM - and if you were around in the 70's and 80's you would have heard jokes about how it'd have to be an IBM to 'go crazy' - at least that's what all the DEC fans would say...
Note: they didn't call it a VAX or a PDP....
Or am I just too stinking old?

Yeah, yeah, yeah...
HP has been making phenomenal oscilliscopes, test gear and calculators for a long time. I still use my HP41CV that got me through school years back.
Are you guys for real? - HP makes the HP4 and some of the more reliable printers made today!
All laptops have 'issues' like you're talking here, memory manufacturers have a track record that I would attack, but Hewlett Packard? - come on,
Go out and buy a Epson Laser Jet printer that'll hold up to abuse like the HP4, I'll betcha canon makes a great bubblejet plotter (hp500 designjet), hey, I know - buy your self an Epson laptop!
Woah, slashdotters continue to amaze me, sometimes perfect advice, sometimes they go 'sailing off on a tangent'
This guy wants to do what 1000's of schools have to do to preserve their sanity.
www.fortres.com is a product that just about every school tech coordinator has heard of and/or used for years! - it will let you make a 'kiosk' machine that users only have IE and not much else, it'll prevent users from changing desktops, deleting printers, no network settings changes....etc...etc...
www.fortres.com for fortress software,
www.censornet.com for a free Internet filter
www.slashdot.org for usually good advice
with google for information and fark for a good laugh - those are about the only web sites I really need during the week - maybe hp's web site for printer drivers...
Guys....
Actually this does not require any computing power at all..
Get some highly directional microphones (directional cancellation)...and if that doesn't work, well, you can always get two microphones.....
very near each other you point one at the sound source (person speaking) and one away (use two Shure SM-57's)....you using the balanced audio pins 2 and 3 you hook pin 3 of the away mic to pin 2 of the person mic and likewise with the other two, now hook the two combination up to your input...walla!
Analog, non-powered background noise cancellation using the miracle of 180 degree phase cancellation.
this equates to....
person + noise - (noise) = person talking...
person + feedback - feedback = person..
I know this is hard to type out, but it's a technique I've been using in the pro-audio world since about 1980....and it still works...of course you could (and I usually do) use a very small mixer with variable levels on both mics....
that way you have some control over the '3 dimensional' 'sound' of the input....natural reflections from the source and natural slight delays and echos from the rooms environment.

Anonymous,
Heh Heh, if Christ had the internet he'd been spammed by pontius pilot, his email read and the photochoppers would have put his head on the body of brittany spears. As it was it happened just slightly differently.
When we really look at what 'rights are being killed' there really aren't any 'being killed', at least I have yet to see the crosses going up on the edge of town and haven't seen the romans (Congress) rounding up masses for crucifixtion.
Look around, no-one is being repressed!
Hey!, aren't most people that 'frequent' slashdot their own 'sysadmins?', personally I own my own RAQ and domain, sure it's co-located, but it's still mine for $75.00/month - no-one has ever (or will) install such a gadget on this machine or any domain I host/donate.
I think people are freaking out about nothing...there is no way any 'men in black suits and thin ties' can monitor all the email that comes out of a major co-lo. they just can't....sorry, but that's a hard pill to swallow.
If you think carnivore is running on your server, well, I'll give you a free email address and web based email - that'll quite down all the whinning.
Okay, so there are thousands of ticked off sysadmins out there, simple solution:
If thousands of sys admins blocked battle-creek.mi.us and any/all other business's in that area (kellogs), wouldn't it suck to be them?
What if IAN didn't just randomly 'test their server'?, what if someone reported spam being sent from that server? - then let's say IAN's service was testing the server to see if it should be blocked upon someone's request?
Who in their right mind uses anything but linux to handle email anyway? Lotus Domino? - come on.
