I don't understand why people want everything to look the same, and I don't understand why people have such a hard time dealing with new things.
Consistency? Comfort? I generally use KDE and i try to only use KDE programs, why? because those programs all use the same shortcut keys, they all use my prefered color scheme, widgets, etc. Sure i could learn to use different guis, but why on earth would i want to? I mean, it is not like the different gui's actually add any benefits, except some people might think they look pretty.
No, give me consistency so i can use my time and brain cells on something useful instead of learning new gui's just because someone wanted to make a kewl gui.
And if you want a list of programs that i don't like because of their non-standard guis then here is a short list: real player, quicktime, xine, xmms, winamp, ms media player, icq, ms messenger, lotus notes, im sure i can find others....
I don't think you would like it if every time you entered a different car all the basic controls would be moved around and maybe even work differently. Would make it annoying to drive wouldnt it?
I'm afraid my expectations to this review was set too high. They sure do look at a large ammount of boards, but they only compare features which i could do myself with a little help from a web browser.
But the reason im really posting is that i disagree with their rating of Asus' support. Especially regarding Bios updates, or should i say the lack of Bios updates. I have been using a beta bios for almost 2 years now to get a 40 Gig harddrive to work on a P5A. There havent been a single bios upgrade since i bought my board... I have had similar experiences in the past.
I can't say if they have improved over the last few years but i somehow doubt it and i dont care, the P5A is my last Asus board and it is the next one in line to be replaced.
Im personally using Mcafee, mainly because i have good experiences with it from work where we have it running both on all windows clients and linux file servers. And if you aren't behind a "real" firewall it does come with McAfee firewall included, which i haven't actually tried myself. I think there is a trial version but im not sure. And if you like all kinds of other crap^H^H^H^Hutilities then you can get it from McAfee as well.
An alternative i have heard some good things about though is Panda antivirus. One of the good things is that you can get an evalution version so you can try it before shelling out the money.
Another one i haven't seen mentioned on here, and that i actually own but havent tried (came with my motherboard) is PC-cillin. This one allows you to download an evaluation version as well.
I could mention a few others, but they have already been mentioned by others... (Norton antivirus for instance)
That is one way to gain karma, the other is making yet another post stating that the way to gain karma is to say "This post's going to be modded -1 offtopic, but.. "
Now whatever making a post pointing out that a good way to gain karma is to write a post stating that a good way to gain karma is to say that a post is going to be modded down, is a good way to gain karma i don't know.
But i'm not gonna say that moderators should not mod this post up, nor am i gonna ask them to mod it down as both statements would have a phycological effect and would hence influence the moderation of this post. So please, just do as you wish.
And i think it is time to shut up now before i confuse myself even more.
that went by the name of Mobilix here in Denmark but who changed their name to Orange about a year ago. In fact, maybe this was why they changed their name. Don't believe all the bullshit about them just wanting to use the same name all over the world!

I don't know where they get the idea that Lego's popularity is rising. I live in the land of lego (not to be confused with Legoland:) and the only news i have heard about lego for a long time is that they have problems selling enough as well as making a profit.
Doing a quick search on the net i found
this (it's in danish) statement from november 2000 where they layed off 300 employees after losing approx 70M usd (500M dkk)
actually its come so far that some folks in my office who have never seen anything but Windows tell me that the GUI of an Apple sucks. I really hate Apple and everything they do (OS architecturewise), but their GUIs always were intuitive.
Macs intuitive? Yes i grew up with windows (Well, DOS 5.0 without windows at first), moved to unix in school (and this is where i still am at home) and started using macs at work. Even today i keep getting stuck in the mac gui. I might be weird but to me it is far from being intuitive. I even prefer windows 3.0 to the mac gui. So even though i have seen at least 7* different desktop guis i think the apple one sucks the most. I wish i could agree with you though, i would love to have a cube under my table.
*) More actually but im only counting those i have actually used for an extended period of time.
IMHO if you can't figure out how to install it, you probably shouldn't be using it. When I think back when I installed my Linux I had to research my entire computer and find out about the hard drive, cd-rom, cpu, ethernet card, Monitor, etc, etc... which for a newbie can be very frustrating and time consuming - they just want to press the pretty little button and have it installed.
Yes, installing linux was like that 3 years ago, now however you plug in the cd and click a few times with the mouse and you are up and running. At least if you are using one of the "user friendly" distros.
You might argue that you want total control over things and that is all fine and good. We are some who just want it to work though. Im a programmer at heart. When i have to install a new box i just want to get it over with so i can get back to doing something fun. Can't see why i should waste my time doing something the computer can do for me.
And why shouldn't people who dont know how to use a command line be able to use it? Why should we prevent the average joe from getting a more secure and more stable operating system just because he isnt a poweruser?
So please don't take my pretty little install button away. I might not need it, but i sure like it.
At my job I make $30K, when my son was born, he had some problems, and we got to _choose_ which hospital to take him too. Not which hospital in town, but which hospital in the whole U.S. That doesn't happen with socialized medicine.
Er, i can choose freely from any hospital in this country as well without paying anything and last time i checked i live in a socialistic country. If there are better ways to get threated outside the country the govt will usually pay the entire thing. What was your point again?
(And like the average joe is qualified to choose in the first place, but that is a totally different topic)
The concern for me is not that he (or any individual) is at the helm, but rather WHERE and HOW he is steering it.
I don't believe that anyone got a say about how MS Windows will evolve in the future, at least with Linux they can actually act if they think it is going the wrong way. I can't see how Linus, Alan and the rest of the gang are less qualified than any commitee.
Although there's nothing wrong with a singular hobbyist perspective (or even a grouping of divergent hobbyists), it's difficult to argue that the output of such an effort is equivelent to that of a company that needs to sell to consumers.
No it's not. A company have deadlines and budgets it needs to follow as well as turning a profit. And do you honestly believe that you can get people to work on something that is controlled by IBM, DELL, Compag, whatever? I know that I wouldn't unless i got paid to do it. It is just not a hobby anymore once the big guys are in charge and when it is not a hobby then i expect to get paid. I would be surprised if i am the only one thinking like that.
Issues like ease of use may not be sexy to someone like Linus, but it can make or break a company.
Huh? This is the KERNEL, not a word processor. You dont set it up every day and you need to know a lot about your computer when you do so. Sure the config before a compile could be easier, but i think you would upset more than one person if you get rid of all the hairy options. I'm sure you could even get it to autodetect everything for you, but i don't know about you but i haven't ever seen a system that could do this reliably. In most cases you don't have to mess with it unless you really want to, most distros ship with a kernel that supports virtually everything automagically.
You mean open a new window. It doesnt start a new instance, it makes the current running one open an additional window. This is an extremly useful feature, not a flaw. I believe ALL browsers will do this, be it ie or ns or konquerer or .
PS: I have 9 konqueror windows open right now and only one konqueror process running.

A few years ago i learned a little magic trick that instantly made all my junk mail go away.
All i had to do was go to my post office, buy a little sticker for approx 1$ and then go home and put it on my mailbox and *poof* no my ads. (The funny thing is that i still get some junk mail, but only from american companies to whoem i was stupid enough to send in my registration card. I wont make that mistake again.)

Seriously, this is pretty dumb. Why does everyone want linux to "gain a substantial foothold on the desktop".
Just a few reasons why i would like to see linux get a foothold:
More hardware vendors would start making drivers (i dont want to keep having to select my hardware out of a small supported group, i want to select the hardware that is best suited for me)
More commercial software will be ported or even written for linux. (Why be stuck with windows because the programs i need wont run on linux)
Im tired of playing tech support for my friends who are using windows:)
1. If you plan on seeing that bootup splash screen alot then stability is not focus for you.
Either that or you turn off your computer when you arent using it. We are some that dont like huge powerbills and the sound of fans while we sleep.
2. If stability is not your focus then don't use linux.
Why not? I would still use it even if windows was more stable than linux. Stability is important but usability is more important.
3. If you want pretty boot splash screens instead of dire information of whats inside your computer and how its operating with linux; then you're a fool. (This is why I don't tolerate macs and this is also why I always press ESC when starting a windows computer. To make sure that nothings going wrong)
Wow, you must really be bored. I usually fetch some coffee while my machine boots up. And if i have to read all the messages to see if something goes wrong well then i think that is a flaw.
Did you actually bother looking at the product? The following is a quote from the documentation:
Taking the description simple, I'd say: This is a sort of kernel modification that hides all these messages at bootup and instead shows a user defined logo (or whatever) with a progress bar and at your opinion a small piece of text. It can also come up with a kind of "warning" or "fail" logo, if the initscripts think: Wait - something went wrong here.
And further down they say this:
[...] This puts a "warning" or "failure" symbol on the screen. The user can switch to another console (where the bootmessages are) in order to check whats going on.
So you still get your boot messages if you want them.
I havent tried this thing myself yet but i sure am going to. Just too bad win4lin doesnt have a 2.2.18 patch yet:(
If are feeling superior because your nation "gets by" without private ownership of firearms, you might consider the age of democracy in your nation compared to in the USA.
Huh, my coffee table is older than the USA.
And we have had a democracy since 1849. Somewhat interupted during WW2 thanks to Germany invading us, but i dont think you can blame our goverment for that, especially not considering we were neutral at the time.
I guess i should mention that im Danish and i dont have the right to own a firearm, but i do have the right to free education (actually they pay me 500$ per month for studying) free health care, good unemployment support (and a tax rate of about 45% for a person with a normal income.:( But i at least feel that im getting something for the money. )
The only thing that really bugs me when it comes to personal freedom here is that we still have the draft. Maybe if we didnt have free education some poorer people would volunteer so we didnt need it....
Situation 1: Australian law dictates that DVD player manufacturers do not have to stick to the MPAA's rules on region encoding.
In Denmark it is almost easier to get a code free player than a non-free one. There is absolutely nothing in Danish law stating that a dvd player must use the region codes. So from many dealers you get one or more of these options:
Get a player that will only play region 2 discs. (If you get it cracked later it will void the warranty)
Pay a little extra and they will crack it for you. (You still get full warranty)
They have already cracked it so you don't even get a choice.
All of the above are fully legal. We got everything from small dealers to large chains selling code-free players. I can't speak for the rest of europe but i would imagine other countries would be like that too(?)
I intimately understand what is behind the BSA's arguments, but their methods are unacceptable IMHO.
I don't know which is worse. The BSA playing bullies or that the law backs them up. If they didnt have the law on their side there wouldn't be a case and we wouldn't be discussing this in the first place. So is the real problem BSA or the law? I personally bet on the law in this case. And this can quickly lead to another discussion. Who is the law supposed to protect vs who does the law protect.
<flamebait>
According to what i have heard and read over the last few years i have come to the conclusion that the American laws are mainly trying to protect big corporations and those who have a big wallet. I personally find this very disturbing and I sincerly hope that I have simply been exposed to a bunch of bad examples that are not representitive. If this *IS* true then i dont understand how the average american citizen can accept this. Considering how much we hear about the "freedom" and "rights" the americans have i find it funny that we hear about bad examples so often.
</flamebait>
Keep your fingers crossed...I will for a few years.
That is the entire problem, it will be years before it is done. If a win 9x clone was to succeed it would have to be out soon. I mean, in 2 - 3 years from now it will probably be like installing win 3.11 again. It works, but it is old and fairly useless as all the new programs wont run on it...
I personally think that something like Wine is much more interesting. It makes you able to run Windows programs while it doesnt limit you to it.
The alternative i use myself is Win4Lin. It might be a sucky solution to actually run 2 operating systems at the same time, but hey, it lets me use all the Windows programs i need except for Diablo 2:)
I don't want to sound mean, but if you want toolbars in your apps, that's your problem. The fact that this wasn't done so far shows, imho, that most current users don't care much for that. Perhaps most of them are quite happy with TeX or plain text.
Uh, no. This shows that the majority of the current users who are creating software don't care much for that. It doesn't say anything about the majority of users who don't happen to develop their own software. If the majority of users wanted non-gui tools then things like MS Office and Dreamweaver wouldn't be so popular.
Now to dreamweaver: I don't find a lack of such program to be a handicap at all. When I was doing full-time web design on windows, I still used vim. The problem with GUI html editors is that you can't automate them like you can a good text editor. With vim you get immensely useful things like abbreviations, copy/pasting multiple times, so on. If I need to create 10 links, I create one, copy it, do 10p (paste 10 times) and change the URLs. I realize that for many people it's a matter of taste to prefer GUI tools, but again, lack of such programs shows that it's not a big deal for most. But if you really want it, start coding.
You ever heard of ctrl-c and ctrl-v under Windows? And you might not be able to automate programs like Dreamweaver as much as you can do in a good text editor, but you dont have to go through the hassle of typing it all out yourself if you are using a program like Dreamweaver, which is the entire point of that program. If the majority of the users would want this, then why are there so many different HTML editors out there and even more being worked on? And for the "start coding" remark. Not all users are coders, and even if they were they might not have the time to play around with making their own software. That is why they spend money on programs like Dreamweaver. (Not to mention that most programmers dont have great artistic skills and hence arent really suitable for creating websites in the first place)
I think that was enough ranting for one night:)
PS: I'm a programmer myself, and the lack of artistic skills do apply to me:)
Well, i happen to have a pioneer 24x ide cdrom. (pioneer dr-a24x) Adding "hdc=cdrom" in the lilo prompt fixed it and let me install and run linux just fine. (have worked with any distro i have tried but corel linux which didnt let me add boot time arguments during install) And after i stuck it into lilo.conf it have worked flawlessly, making me only have to deal with it when i was upgrading/reinstalling the system.
