I haven't been on slashdot for a while, but checked back here anyway. I'm aware of that event, but that wasn't the foreigners uprising. That was hooligans. It became a race issue the next Sunday, when 'natives' decided to stand up to the 'imports'.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. People have pretty set ideas about things and I ain't no media outlet. There was some study I heard about once where it seemed to find that the only effective way to change the attitudes of racist male teenagers was to show them pictures of hot foreign girls. Then they thought it was a good idea to let foreigners into their country.
I have a vague opinion that people can get on better if they mingle (though it may take some time), you seem to have a vague opinion that they get on worse if they mingle. People like us will always exist, and always disagree.
Besides, maybe I only think this way because I like foreign girls.
I'm not sure you can point to a country where there aren't cultural clashes that can become dangerous. In my very humble opinion, the situations you refer to often arise where there is a group, in the majority, that feels as if it is having its birthright impinged upon. It appears that in regions where there is no main majority that can feel this way that problems are of a smaller scale, and are of those typical in many societies. The benefit of being exposed to many cultures (food, friendship, etc) outweighs, in my mind, these smaller issues.
One case you mention is Australia. The suburb where the recent trouble started was Cronulla where the population is by far Australian caucasian, unlike the majority of Sydney.
I don't have a social policy in mind, but I like the idea of being able to travel, and live, in other countries. Societies being afraid of the disruption I might cause kinda saddens me. If it really is for the greater good, I'll stay at home. But I'm not sure it is.
Perhaps some (admittedly twisted) hope is offered by the way focus changes from one migrant group to another as the society becomes used to the first group, or the first group becomes integrated. There is a lot less resentment towards East Asians in Australia now than there was ten years ago, for instance.
I consulted my doctor. He said 'I don't know' and charged me sixty bucks. Now I just wait whilst I slowly melt into the cup of coffee I can barely hold myself over.
I don't mind that he couldn't help me. I'm sure he's spending that money to work on creating cheaper anti-malarial drugs.
Only 6? In 1990, you could pick up a white dwarf magazine and it would have no adverts aside from GW, and no references to anything else. This is in stark contrast to one from the mid eighties where I read a letter saying something along the lines of 'the fact that white dwarf is not biased to one gaming system is the reason I read it, unlike some other magazines I could mention.' Dragon being the obvious comparison point.
The removal of anything other than GW products and retailers has been part of their strategy for a long time.
Also, obliteration of the past... Nick Lund (I am sure) was a designer of their miniatures, his style is distinctive. He ended up working for grenadier, and GW then referred to his miniatures as being designed by GW. Which is fine for a corporation, sure, but it makes you realise, it ain't nothing but.
Perhaps you saw it six years ago because they have been increasing in size and thus in ability to use these sort of tactics, but those tactics have been around a long while now.
My point was marketing, marketing creating taste. Which to me is distasteful and the filters you presented reeked of. Oprah and her herd.
I think you might concede that though. Although in this case you believe the shepherd with her golden goose is leading her sheep down the right path, her cows to the right pasture.
My other point was the necessity of variety of filters, which was not antagonistic towards your post though you presented vastly mainstream filters. From your reasonability, I think you might resonate with me here also.
Although I might disagree about a cow's best pasture, you endear me to you through your hatred. And hey, they're cows.
Yes, filtering is good, but if there was a choice between crap and the filters you have chosen I would dive straight into the crap.
I mean, Oprah's book club? One good book a month?
Unless you really are a fat middle aged housewife with nothing to do except admire doctor phil's bald spot, in which case, I take it back and I'm sorry.
Choice of filters is vital, your choice of consumer popularity implies a choice of marketing push. Especially when you're talking about anything Oprah presents on her show. I wish the link between popularity and marketing wasn't so large, but, perhaps, now I understand why.
I considered this and am still in the process of deciding which way to go. I wanted to head into chemistry... the chemistry lecturer I had was previously in IT, with an EE degree. His advice?
'Stay in computing. I rue the day I left IT. Sure, chemistry is interesting, but money's what feathers the nest.'
He had got himself quite a decent salary by academic standards, but it was still two fifths of mine, a developer with less than three years full time experience.
So me? My plan is, head towards academia, but only part time, feather that nest, because there are some real soft feathers around. After another degree then decide what is important.
Do not be fooled. I am constantly surprised at the number of intelligent people who want to believe. They become Christians and the bible is the source for them. This is true no matter what country you live in. I live in Sydney, and I have had many numerous conversations with people who want to save my soul before the day of judgement is upon us.
They are just more obvious in America because Americans are, without exception, louder, brasher, more egotistical and obnoxious than the rest of the world.

The situation in Australia was not due to the culturally foreign population rising up against the native. Vice versa.

I don't know what country this article comes from, but 'minus 455 degrees fahrenheit'? What third world country still uses that scale?

My estimate? perhaps the turn was 15 years ago.
I hesitate...

Perhaps I should have said all Americans are, without exception, more obnoxious etc etc and (ahem) can't recognise a joke...
