Funny....my experience was the exact opposite: I had a much easier time finding the movies I wanted on Netflix than Blockbuster. I kept the blockbuster trial for 3 months (and got, IIRC, 3 free DVD coupons) and then ditched it and stuck with netflix.

That was a few years ago, though, so maybe they've improved. Netflix usually has what I want and generally gets me the top item of my queue two days after I drop a disk in the mailbox, so I'm satisfied with them.

From my experience CS classes are teaching way too much theory. I have all kinds of kids that are applying for jobs that know tons of theory, but can't apply the shit. CS professors need to get their heads out of the clouds and teach something that the students will really be able to use.

And here I thought the whole point of CS was to avoid learning anything useful....
But seriously, I'm studying CS because I WANT to do theory. If I wanted to be a programmer, I'd have signed up for CIS or something. But I'm not interested in being able to write a program as quickly as possible; I'm interested in being able to find the best possible solution to a given problem.

Further, there's an assumption implicit in your argument: That public schools would not be able to compete effectively with private schools for students. Why do you believe that?

Maybe because they don't follow the same rules? Specifically, public schools have to take anybody; I used to teach middle school and it was basically impossible to kick anyone out, no matter how disruptive they were, unless they brought a weapon to school. (In that case, it was automatic expulsion....I unsuccessfully fought against expelling one kid who got kicked out for shooting a trash can (outside) with a bb gun) In some cases it took court involvement to get the kids to school semi-regularly, but if they showed up, they went to class. Private schools get to choose who gets in, and who stays in.

I guarantee my kids could have learned quite a bit more if I could have kicked out the 3 worst kids from each class. (NOT the slowest, just the most disruptive) I quit teaching public school rather than deal with it.
