Woo Hoo! a Mac User! I really wish I could afford a Mac, better hardware IMHO. But since I am poor I can only afford a PC, the Volkswagon of computers. How I long for hardware that works when you get it, without all the hassles of making sure a driver is availiable.
Don't get me wrong though; the MacOS sucks! I use my roommate's iMac with OSX, and I would prefer to run BeOS on it. Much better OS on excellent hardware.
Yeah yeah... I have heard enough "BeOS is dead" speeches to write a 20 volume encyclopedia on the topic. My main computer needs though are net browsing, email, chatting, programming and movies (does this sound like you?). BeOS does wonders at all of this and more. Too bad there are very few good games for the BeOS, it would make an excellent gaming OS. (Then again I am not a gamer.) BTW Although BeOS the operating system *is* dead; BeOS the community is on an upswing. That is why there are several projects aiming not only to recreate the OS, but expand on it as well. There are other OSes out there besides Win*, Mac and Linux.
*nix OSs make great servers. I plan on running several *nix servers in the very near future (all without X). Nothing that I have seen in the way of desktop computing on a *nix system would make me switch though. X is a horrendous beast from hell that has enough silt to make Bill Gates envious. I have several machines that I have given up trying to get X to install on (yes I have done many "succesful" X installs, but only when I was in a mood to torture myself 8^) ). Until the *nix community kills X, there is not much chance of *nix being an optimal desktop. Disclaimer: Author is aware that X is not the only windowing system on *nix machines. It is just the most prevalent and is taking more developers than should really be nessesary. Face it, X is a resource hog: both in hardware and development. (No, I do not want to spend a weekend getting X tuned and custom compiled, I have better ways to waste my time. Like writing this rant.)
My suggestion is to keep *nix on the servers, for the desktop look else where. I know there are a lot of people working on making X based desktop solutions, but get it together! There are many OSS projects that are *far* better suited to the desktop (most of them even use *nix shells and commands!). I am not saying for those who love to develop X and its environment to switch to developing something else; I am saying that those really interested in developing a decent desktop environment should look elsewhere. *see also my comment about OSX above.
As for my grammar/spelling/punctuation, I have been outside under the big yellow light all day and am feeling a little fried. On top of that, I went to a public school here in the good old US of A where I was little inclined to do any actual studying.
Screw the ACs! I post my rants with... with... uhmm... with my own/nick attached to them!!!
whoa mobets... are you actually Bill Gates? I thought those words sounded familiar 8^)
"640K of memory should be enough for anybody" -- B.G.III
How old was I when I first thought that Linux would actually make a decent Desktop OS? Oh yeah... I never thought that 8^) Linux servers 4ever -- for the rest of us there is OpenBeOS.
I have no vested interest in Wi-Fi. I personally am waiting for Ultra Wide Band devices to become prevalent. These devices supposedly cannot be jammed by something like RF lighting or other current methods.
I say do your homework *before* investing in the latest technology, or face being screwed in the arse later. If you can't afford to switch to technology that actually works, then don't buy into the one that does not. Simple? I think so. Reasonable? Definitely.
Hey I don't get spam either! I also notice that a large number of people who get spammed have a Hotmail account or they post to message boards, or give their email to who ever asks for it.
Nobody really has a right to be complaining about spam, in most cases they asked for it!(even if they don't realize it at the time) They give their addy to an untrusted entity and expect that they will not get spammed! This is outrageous!
I have to take the spammers' side of the arguement on this. First they take away the right for spammers to market their product, next they will be taking away the rights of the average citizen in regards to the net. I see this as a downward spiral.
Spammers make a lot of money, otherwise they would have no incentive to mass mail advertisments. I know that some innocents get hit hard with spam, but it mostly those who are irresponsible with their address security that comprise the bulk of spam complaints. I feel the same way about telemarketing and junksnailmail. I recieve very few junk mails and telemarketing calls. Whenever I get a telemarketer, I harrass them from the get-go and they never call back(ok maybe they call back a few times, but they get the point real fast).
If nobody ever responded to spam(or reacted to it), there would not be any spam. If anything, there should be laws against those who answer spam and give spammers their money and attention. These people are the *real* criminals in my book.
My point is that if you get spammed, 90% of the time it is your own fault so deal with it(that includes all of you Hotmailers out there too).
I say take a sharp scalpel, and make thousands of tiny lacerations on their bodies, and submerge them into a pool of bleach. Very painful, and chances are they *might* just live to regret it.
Then again, I don't get spam because I am careful to not give my main account addresses to untrusted people. That is just common sense. I rotate my free accounts when one gets too much spam.
So by infringing on a copyright, I am *not* commiting theft. Wow, I always thought that copyright infringement was stealing intellectual property, I have been misled my entire life!
Good point! I think M$ is dumb having him say this! This is really a bright red and purple polka dot billboard screaming "Microsoft is guilty as charged! And too stupid to realize that they brought this all upon themselves to boot!!!!"
This is a far more entertaining court case than the O.J. trial ever was! Not to mention the theatrical performances being put on by those involved! This sure beats watching OJ try that isotoner!
Why is splitting Windows up even an issue??? Microsoft split Windows years ago. I still see Win98 on store shelves along with WinMe, Win2000, and WinXP. Each of these can almost be considered separate OSes as they stand. Yes, I know they can run mostly the same apps. But support(drivers, etc) for each one is a unique experience(so i've heard).
Also, I cannot see how removing M$ from the picture altogether even could set the industry back 2 years, don't even mention 20 years. Much of Windows has to still run code from the jurassic age. Come on! Getting rid of M$ will bring the industry into the new millenium!
The cost of switching from M$ will be high because of all the closed standards involved, but much less money will be spent in the long run.
There are many viable replacements to Windows already availiable. In the server sector, there are the *BSDs, and linux. On the desktop, the BeOS clones(YES I AM VERY WELL AWARE THAT THEY ARE NOT READY FOR MAINSTREAM USE AT THIS TIME!!! FLAME ALL YOU WANT, BUT THEY WILL MAKE EXCELLENT DESKTOP/MEDIA OSES WHEN THEY ARE RELEASED). Linux and FreeBSD will also make decent desktop OSes.
As for standards compliance, all the alternative oses combined are more standards compliant than Windows alone(I don't consider.NET, ActiveX and the likes as standards. A standard part of Windows, yes, but far from being standards.)
As for AMD, this seems a chickenshit move. Just about every customer of Microsoft(not consumers, im talking the OEMs and other b2b) are on the side wanting Bill's head on a stake. Why is AMD standing up for M$?? While this whole ordeal is not likely to kill M$ immediately, I do think that it will wound M$ to the point where it can no longer maintain its monopoly much longer. M$ won't give up without a fight though, and will likely throw its money every which way trying to stay afloat. I don't think AMD will get much more than mucho publicity and a free hand out from M$. Is that so wrong? In the end AMD will come out some odd bucks richer, M$ will take its place in computing history, and (an)other OS(es) will take M$'s place.
I hope you enjoyed this bit of fiction, brought to you by the drimmeeper and the letters o, s, and s. Have an Open-Sourced Day! 8^)
Blah Blah SMACK!!!!
You clearly missed the point on that one, knuth! Im sure oliverthered knows all about Johann Gutenberg, that wonderful invention called the press, and that of course the first thing that ol' Johann printed was the bible! Who doesn't know that? I doubt that you really studied much in school. If you had you would probably remember that the first printed bible was actually an act of defiance against the repressive church. Maybe *I* am the one rambling aimlessly. Or maybe *you* should take a step back and take a look at the big picture before posting such inane drizzle. Your facts are right on on, but so are oliverthered's. You know not enough for the words that you speak and those you denounce. post--->/dev/rediculous
Thank you for correcting me on that. I thought I had read somewhere that they made a percentage but I was wrong. I was probabaly off somewhere in the ether at the time. 8^)
I do believe (please correct me if im dead wrong here) that the recording industry gets a percentage of CD-R sales. If this is true, then what right do they have to complain? Again, please correct me if im wrong.
They did say that it has not been activated yet, so i don't doubt that your cpu cycles for the app are zero when idle. Then again, while this whole kazaa thing could be true, it still sounds like the 1st of April to me. Wait a minute, IT IS!
And in other news, Microsoft announces it will no longer be developing its Windows operating system. A Microsoft spokesperson said, "We believe we can do much better training circus fleas to do the tasks normally assosciated with operating systems". Certainly this flea based system will boost the veterinary industry due to an influx of people taking their computers in for flea baths. More at 11.
BeOS runs all of my hardware just fine! No component of my rig is more than 1 1/2 years old. I have a GeForce2 for video, a SB 128 sound card, and a realtek nic. The only problem I have had is the flaky sound card(has the same problem relating to my motherboard in all OSes including windows, linux, *bsd) Granted, although BeOS has far less supported hardware than linux, Be made sure that it supported a major cross section of PC owners. I boot FreeBSD, Linux and BeOS from the same machine(all hardware optimised) and Be definitly boots faster and utilizes ALL of my hardware. Yes, I admit, I USE THIRD PARTY DRIVERS! So what does that mean, that I'm inferior just because I use a newer OS that requires me to manually load software to get everything to run? BTW drivers are still being developed for Be. Do you realise how many Win/DOS users said the same things about hardware compatibility in Linux' youth?
This should be a great way for most of the non-MS community to bond together. BeOS and AtheOS already are similar enough that only minor source changes are needed to compile for either OS. GNU/Linux without X, running apps that only need recompiling with or without a few source changes to run on an original BeOS, OpenBeOS, BlueOS or even an AtheOS box and vice versa. If this can be done with the GNU/Linux kernel, why not another *nix variant's kernel too. This idea could be the unity that the non-MS community needs to finally overthrow the beast! Chose your kernel to suit your specific needs. Modify and recompile the apps you need to get the job done. File compatibility would not be (i think anyway) the issue it is today. I personally can't wait for OpenBeOS to mature, and am very enthusiastic about all of the different projects and forks related to it. What is your opinion?
And all the X fans should consider the BeOS enviroment. I have used both KDE and Gnome and think that they make a decent intermediate step to the future; they are not however the future because they rely so much on X. I use xf86 on FreeBSD and triple boot to BeOS and AtheOS on a daily basis. I long for the responsive gui of BeOS whenever I run X. WindowMaker is nice but I think Be's elegant design is better. I see this AtheBeNux fork as a great way for the Linux community to experience a better windowing system than X.
