    All that matters is that it's open to third party hardware and third party developers in general.

    This is how Microsoft won in the PC clone wars over IBM -- the wrote the OS that every vendor could use on their computers. This same dynamic is happening again with smartphones. The iPhone will be playing the role of the IBM PC.

    The reality is that 99% of all software patents are bogus because they fail the tests of being novel, non-trivial, and non-obvious. 90% of them fail all three tests. The problem is that the patent offices are completely incompetent. The simplest fix is to get rid of all software patents.

    when stock markets fuck-up big time (again), the ripple effect is severe enough that the only way to avoid it is to stock up on supplies and bug out to the woods.

    The thing about HFT is that when it does fuck-up the markets, the markets naturally fuck-down again within minutes. Use limit orders and you won't get boned. I'd like to see more flash crashes/explosions because they create enormous opportunities for more sensible investors.

    I can't understand why any country other than America would even care about draconian copyright enforcement. Given that America is a huge media maker and most of the world are consumers of this media with a small amount they produce themselves, their citizens achieve a higher quality if life with existing copyright enforcement. ACTA really only benefits the US. All the other countries should figure this out.

    This is the PC Clone wars redux. Apple should study what happened to IBM and the IBM PC since it is playing that role, with its fully proprietary system. Android is the new MS-DOS. The intense competition among lots of hardware vendors for both price and power unified by the new MS-DOS will be more heat than IBM... I mean Apple... can handle.

    the ideal code indentation is a TAB. Set your editor to display whatever indentation width you like, don't expect to inflict that choice on everyone else.

    This idea only works if your lines are infinitely long. With fixed-length lines, e.g., 80 chars, you overrun somebody else's line length if you use different TAB settings in your editors. This means you "inflict that choice on everyone else."
