The article wants MS not to donate any machine or Windows to poor schools for competitive issues, to protect Apple's interests, but yet at the same time it critizes MS because it donates old technology.
The article accuses MS of bribing, yet there is no known evidence of such a criminal conduct. If the bribe means here a settlement, it is a legal move. There is nothing to talk about here.
Licensing program is not a good move, but let's talk about Oracle's licensing practices. Let's talk about other licensing plans out there in the industry. If you are going to critize MS for this and not others, you are just plain lying about your facts
It is also unbelievable that any person who bullshits to bash MS can get this much of attention. It doesn't even matter what you say anymore, as long as you bash MS. The facts mentioned in the article are all very well known, but still we see it here because it is yet another MS bashing article.
I just hope the real workers behind the open source are not following this stupid trend. Otherwise open source movement is doomed.
Why should Microsoft not allowed to support a club, whereas you can have your linux club. You are saying that, businesses which had legal problems shouldn't have any right to do anything in this world. That's your restricted view of democracy.
Most of the slashdot readers are average joe guys. They don't know much about what's going on other than what they are told to believe in the news.
They don't even understand what it means extending java for windows. They just say , oh Microsoft crippled java.
This ruling will definitely overturned in a higher court. We can't allow unsucessful, bad companies to dictate their technologies on us, just because they made poor decisions and Microsoft is there to blame for everything. It is just very bad that, you can't really trust American Justice System. It is obvious that it is totally random, whatever the judge reads on the news effect his/her decision.
You didn't read the federal court's ruling did you? The federal didn't force Microsoft to include Java because of the contract, it is because of other reasons. Just think a little.
Directly named in the findings of fact mean what? Those are findings only, and Microsoft are not found guily of all those facts. So essentially, you are saying that in the court documents the word "Jim" passes somewhere, so it means that Jim has to be included with every MS product.
There is a remedy related with this issue and that is XP is providing a way for the user to change its default browser and so on.
Now java only belongs to Sun, so this court made a mistake, and it will be fixed on appeal. I guess the Judge really doesn't know much about the industry and gave a decision based on what he reads on the news.
Appearently you never read the contract at all, did you? The contract says that MS can use Java, it doesn't say it should use it or include it in its products.
Honoring contract means that you follow its rules and terms. You can sign a contract that says that you can use Java in your products, that doesn't mean that you have to use it.
In this case, we should remember that Adobe backed from its initial claims and thus opened the way for a win for the Elcom. This will probably not be true for other cases, and from what I understood the "intention" thing is too shaky. It is too subjective, another jury with a different atmosphere can find the defendant guilty. So overall I think we are still not so sure about the power of DMCA.
You can't compare any product with MS Office. It is one of the best products I have ever seen. I don't know how they do it, but it is extremely fast even in my machine.
Adaption of StarOffice may be good, but I would prefer MS Office over any product out there. It is simply the best in its area.

If this news is really true it is very good news, but I couldn't understand what the guy mean by "Linux runs Java much quicker than Windows". The speed of Java heavily depends on the compiler and runtime technology being used. As far as I know Microsoft Java was one of the fastest JVMs out there. ORP was comparing its own performance with MS's JVM and for many programs it was behind.
Why did you waste your time on reading the whitepaper. Didn't you realize that anything Slashdot reports something against Microsoft which sounds totally unreasonable, always turns out to be wrong. In Slashdot I didn't see one single news that sounds incorrect about Microsoft which turns out to be true. Not a single one. All such news are always bogus and for amusement. That's why I think that average Linux guru is probably not any smarter than average Joe who uses Windows.
I wouldn't answer this post normally, but some people obviously took it seriously.
If you are runing Mozilla, open up Composer
I am strictly talking about the browser Mozilla, not anythingelse. I am talking about the TextArea. IE has a special ability to turn TextArea into a WYSIWYG editor. THere are very few such editors in Mozilla, and usually they are buggy, slow, doesn't work very well, doesn't have a cursor at all and so on. So in other words what I am talking about is not the composer, it is the textArea.
There is all kinds of support for DnD
Are you trying to make fun here. Obviously you have no idea about javascript and dhtml. HTML is not the issue anymore here. MOzilla does not support drag and drop in Javascript as much as IE does. In IE you can place onDrag, onDrop javascript calls for an element and the IE makes everything work seamlessly. You don't have to compute all the coordinates yourself, and try to find out what is the target, what is the source and so on. It is a very simple function call in IE. Mozilla does not have it.
That doesn't surprise me, since everything seems a little slow in Windows
Yeah everything is slow in Windows, and actually Windows is a piece of crap, the worst OS ever. Despite Microsoft's efforts though mozilla was able to run faster on Windows. However it seems that my Windows doesn't know that because in my machine IE is faster, but yeah Microsoft sucks.
You aren't required to use customized themes, They are useful to a lot of people I know
There will be always people who like a particular feature, but software developers do not implement every feature in their products. The effort that the Mozilla developers put in order to make Mozilla skinnable was a waste of time. Total waste. I also don't use it, and I am aware of that. The point is not whether you can use it or not, I am suggesting them that they have wasted their time on this without gaining any particular advantage. People will never switch to Mozilla because it has interesting themes.
Mozilla's interface is meant to be consistant across platforms
That's wrong wrong wrong! If you are writing an application for a particular platform try to make sure that it looks and feels like a native application. That's why Java sucks with Swing. Number one software rule, respect the OS GUI's guidelines. I don't use Macs, but being consistent across the platforms doesn't mean anything for the users. If I am using Windows, I expect Mozilla to look like others. If I am using Linux, I expect all applications to look like similar. That's why X Window and Linux sucks. All the applications are different. Mozilla is different than KDE applications which are different than Gnome applications which are different than Xfig.... Check out Microsoft's IE. It has a Mac version and a Windows version, actually even a Solaris version. I know that Mac and Windows versions don't look alike, but I can use Mac IE. I used it, and it is a great experience. I didn't waste time to figure how to use it just because it didn't look like Windows IE. I mean what's the idea of keeping it consistent, what's the point.
First of all, they're "web pages", not "articles."
Now this was really funny, and after reading this I was shocked to see that your post was modded up to be informative. I am talking about articles which explain how to use javascript, DHTML... in browsers. Most of these articles are for IE only. Obviously web pages are also sometimes for IE, but I didn't have much problem there. I can browse most of the web with Mozilla without any problem. Obviously tolerating such problems on the web will also be good for mozilla, however what I am talking about is that when I design a site and look for examples, articles which explain the javascript or dhtml or html I use, the articles on the web mostly talk about IE examples. This in turn causes a problem because now I expect my code to run on mozilla, until I figure out that mozilla doesn't accept it and actually I have to change it. This causes lots of problems, and at the end either I have to find the same code with mozilla version or I have to spend longs hours trying to figure how can I fix it for mozilla. Mozilla has to think about these too to be more acceptable.
Mozilla does render web pages would normally be broken because they don't follow standards prope
I think you have restricted yourself to HTML only. Web is not HTML only anymore. Don't think page rendering as HTML only. There is javascript, DHTML and so on. Rendering the page correctly is not important, I expect the same functionality in MOzilla. If I can not do something that I can normally do in IE, that's not a good thing.
Your view will only help Mozilla to doom. To win, Mozilla should address these problems. Otherwise I don't think it will be a serious competitor to IE anytime soon.
I like Mozilla and I think it is the only challenger to IE now.
However there are certain shortcomings. Number one is that there is no WYSIWYG editor for Mozilla. Something like HTMLArea. There is sort of such editors, but they do not work as nicely as IE WYSIWYG editors. I mean they are not even close to IE editors. So Mozilla should work very hard to bring such features. As the number of applications that use such features increase Mozilla will destined to doom unless it brings such features.
Second there is no support for drag and drop. There is drag and drop but not using onDrag and onDrop type of events which makes the programming extremely simple. That's a must have in my mind.
Third Mozilla for some reason is a little bit slow in Windows. Not the engine itself, but the program. For some reason it feels less responsive compared to IE. I thought that it is because of this skin, someone claimed that that's not the case, I am not sure whether he is right or wrong. But there is no point of having skins on the browser, it is totally stupid, useless. Get rid of the skin thing permanetly. Try to make sure that your program feels like a native application. Mozilla on Mac OS X is somewhat joke. It doesn't feel like a native application.
Mozilla's being standard complaint is good, however on the net lots of articles are written for IE, because of the historical reasons as we know it. So Mozilla should allow the users to make a nicer transition by enabling certain non-standard IE-only features as much as possible.
Before Mozilla I was only using IE, because Netscape was not good enough, even though at first I tried not to use IE. Now with Mozilla that changed a little. I still use IE most of the time, but I like Mozilla too.
I always wanted to draw comics myself, just for fun. After all as many slashdot posts suggest, many people have lots of funny ideas, but being able draw them on paper is very unique and demands talent.
Where is the innovation in picoGui? It looks like Aqua of Mac Os X. I appreciate the work for this, but please do something on your own, come up with some new nice ideas, think, innovate, bring some excitement to open source community! Why do we have to see Mac OS X like, Windows like interfaces in the open source all the time? Why don't these people come with nice new interface features?
As most other Slashdot news about Microsoft, this news is also not true or at least it is based on assumptions, makeup stories, which are not true.
First of all in the news it says that based on the suspicion that the software giant is trying to leverage its dominance of PC operating systems into the market for mobile phone software which basically means that there is a suspicion and there is no hardcore proof. The news does (actually can) not explain which Microsoft policies cause Microsoft to use its strength on Windows platform to take over the mobile phone market. The only credible issue is the "Titanium" software, but it is not the job of Microsoft to provide the best integration for Windows with competitors' devices. Competitiors has to spend time to build quality software, instead of complaining. This is a software engineering problem. If you can not write better software than Microsoft, then don't complain.
There is also a claim by the lawyer (anonymous coward) that Microsoft is threatining mobile phone operators, but he/she fell short of explaining how, when, which? If you think about it you also realize that Microsoft can not threaten neither mobile phone operators not manufacturers. Tell me how Microsoft can threaten Nokia? Nokia does not sell PCs. There is no way Microsoft can threaten these companies.
To sum up again this news is totally bogus, it is for our amusement, making up stories about Microsoft and laughing at each others' jokes. Have fun
Are you saying that, all those developers working on open source projects are working for "useless updates", afterall you think that the core functionaly do not change radically.
Your argument is extremely poor. People are not stupid, they all make radical decisions. If someone makes a decision for Microsoft, it is probably more rational than a decision for Linux. Because nobody likes Microsoft and it is more expensive. So it is not true that all those people making decisions are cheated. It is harder to cheat them than you think it is.
Having said these and finding your arguments more emotional than rational, it is true that buying software from MS has its downfalls, such as being tied to MS technology, the new license terms. But delivering value is not part of those downfalls. MS really deliver better value in most of the cases. In the end, you can not argue against Microsoft on the value base. You have to argue about other points.
What monopolistic behavior you are talking about? I don't see why Micrsofot and how it can use its monopoly against Sun. They have put java on windows, Sun sued Microsoft, and now as Sun wished we don't have Java on Windows.
Sun will never win this lawsuit. It is a waste of time and resources. Sun will eventually go bankrupt and everybody will think that it is because of Microsoft. It is actually because of other competitiors, Linux, IBM.
It is too bad you want Microsoft to loose in the court for competition, rather than demanding better products. That's a doomed mindset, because courts are for justice, you can not go and sue a company to create an unjust situation as you wish. You have to work your ass off to compete with that company.
This movie will change the whole expectation from these type of movies. It includes so many new techniques. It was very hard to simulate water in these movies, but now it seems that they can simulate almost anything.
The article wants MS not to donate any machine or Windows to poor schools for competitive issues, to protect Apple's interests, but yet at the same time it critizes MS because it donates old technology.

In this case, we should remember that Adobe backed from its initial claims and thus opened the way for a win for the Elcom.
