    I'm using open office on my core machine now... and so far it basically sucks donkey balls.

    I don't have "donkey balls" installed here so I can't observe the effect when I use OO. Is "donkey balls" some kind of Windows look-and-feel emulator or win32 file-compatability app? Please post your link to "donkey balls".

    MS has free and open access to all FOSS code and is free to scan the Internet with Bing to its hearts content searching for discussions of FOSS and all its projects. It's not like FOSS is doing anything that needs to be hidden. Where MS wields power is through political influence in government and trade groups, power FOSS generally lacks or lacks the skill to exploit as effectively as MS because in those arenas, it is always about the money.

    So having MS involved in FOSS stuff is typically no big deal. Well, except for Miguel "Judas" de Icaza.

    On the other hand, perhaps it is time to ditch the RED/YELLOW/GREEN system altogether, and come up with something more effective.

    I've always advocated a cop in a tower with a sniper rifle who would shoot people who run red lights. It's one of the few instances where the death penalty would truly act as a deterrent. I, myself, would probably never again drive a car just to avoid the possibility of getting shot. Look at how green that would be! Think of the whales we could save . . .

    Which is why traffic signs are special shapes. An octagonal blob of snow on a pole at an intersection still communicates "STOP".

    Red-green colorblindness should not affect the ability of a person to correctly observe a traffic light. The placement of the three lights is standardized as to position as well as color. Why was it mentioned in this context?

    They're also denying me KVM access, unless I pay $35.00 for it, so I can go in and fix the networking they changed when they moved my drive to a completely different chassis without my knowledge or approval.

    Since you are not disclosing the ISP name so we can examine their TOS or contracts to see who's really being the jerk here and learn enough actually help you, pay the $35/day just to recover/delete your data if you need to and find another host that suits you.

    Otherwise STFU; I'm beginning to understand how your ISP feels.

    And $35 isn't that much to pay. Surely you're paying several times that per month for the hosting, and if not, their margins are thin enough that you can't expect them to jump through whatever hoops your paranoia requires.

    Agreed. Quit your damn whining, pony up $35 and fix you machine. If you can't fix it, remove any "confidential" information or encrypt it, give them root access an let _them_ try to fix it. Over the long run, find an ISP that offers support on terms you find acceptable and change ISPs; you'll both be happier.

    (Midnight Commander is excellent in a console, and should be part of the base install of every distro)

    yes. Yes! YES!! I install it on every machine I admin. I use it in an xterm on the desktop; it's much better that those GNOME/KDE GUI file managers. I wish that distros would put the statically linked slimmed-down version on their rescue disks.

    The motivation of Microsoft doesn't matter because their actions are all we are privy to. Let their behavior encourage the other GPL violators to "do the right thing" and also see that GPL-licensed software can co-exist with other-licensed software; one just need follow the terms of the licenses.

    IANAP, but is there anything useful to the community in the GPL'ed code released by Microsoft? It seems like a useful utility and there are FOSS ways to make USB/thumb drives bootable.

    Great post, except the part where you ascribe untruths to the Democratic party. They (we) represent a majority of Americans right now, and are not "far left" and DEFINITELY don't "hate the military".

    Democrats AND Republicans = False Dichotomy.Both are sides of the same coin. The rank and file are overwhelmingly decent people who are concerned about their families and communities but are clueless about how things are accomplished in government (HINT: follow the money). The political leaders are almost without exception opportunistic asshats.

    Definitely no.

    I worked for the video game industry, and this has nothing to do with QA or anything... The period of the year when the games sell well is Christmas. But selling your game at Christmas means that the game MUST be ready by the end of September. If you miss September, you can say goodbye to make money with your game (especially if it's crappy).

    Agree. This is also one of the reasons I quit co-authoring Fedora Unleashed. The publisher wanted the book out by Christmas (it may be a Christmas gift for the Slashdot crowd, but few others) which meant that I had to deliver a completed manuscript in September based on a beta version but written to look like it was for the final release. No arguing with the marketing department.

    Man pages are only semi-useful if you ALREADY KNOW WHAT COMMAND YOU NEED.

    Try man -k

    I think what they are looking for is

    man -m real_documentation 8)

    man -k cd is not useful.

    But man -k dvd yields

    brasero (1) - Simple and easy to use CD/DVD burning application for the Gnome Desktop

    dvdauthor (1) - assembles multiple mpeg program streams into a suitable DVD filesystem

    dvddirdel (1) - Deletes a previously authored DVD directory structure in DIR

    Some man pages do offer examples of common usage; those are great. The worst are GNU apps that use info; their man pages are worse than useless and their info pages are overwhelming and confusing.

    It would be great if software authors would accept patches to their man pages that would illustrate common uses of their applications.
