I've heard that statement in several industries and yet there has continued to be innnovation. Even in Google's history -- people said that search engines were already great (Yahoo, Excite, MSN, etc.). However, we all know how that worked out...

Ugh! I wouldn't want those girls anyways! Seriously, watch the video and they show the girls for a little bit. Now I know we're nerds and all, but seriously, there are some standards.
In Waco, Texas I show this map to be accurate to approximately April 2004. This guess is because of the large amount of construction in the area and what stage they are in. (Baylor University has built 6 major buildings in the past two years, 3 are in the midst of construction in this picture).

Having no higher knowledge of physics beyond Physics 101 in college, I would have thought that the shape of the drop in the top would have been shaped more like this.
Is that a common misconception, or is there something else different here than what I'm thinking?
You can make that argument for almost any industry. Drive a car? The same thing happens in that industry. Shop at Walmart? Eat at McDonalds?
I don't think many people on slashdot get it -- this is American business! If you don't like it, try something else. While it may seem like a bloated and unnecessary system, our economic system compensates those who do well and if you were suddenly given control over a multi-million dollar project and a huge paycheck, I don't think we'd be having this discussion.
It's not just the cost of design, it's the materials used. Dell used run-of-the-mill plastic that is ubiquitous and easy to get a hold of while Apple uses metals and specific fans, etc. This all comes together to make it a very different price.
As for the amount, I would pursue cost of new game (50 bucks), and also charge per hour how much time it took you to get everything ready for claims court (hourly wage x time to read our replies and gather information). It will probably be around 120 after all is said and done. Like parent said, most companies would rather fix the issue than lose in a claims court, but they may just never show up -- the second most common thing a company will do in claims court.
Remember, be prepared and professional and the judge will respect you.
I completely agree with your comments. However, it's important to remember the audience that this is for. Some on here would have been upset if several cheap, and innappropriate I might add, shots were not made to the man representing Microsoft.
It is not a luddite attitude that makes me scared about this area, it's the fact that (as scifi as this sounds) it could be introduced by the Chinese gov't (or heck, our own) as a new military. Can you imagine how crazy that would be? These are questions that are actually fully legit right now since we haven't decided the repercussions of what we're doing now. It's similar to cloning, we don't want to do something that our children's children will regret.
Maybe it's because women are being told that they don't matter that women don't buy into games? If you can create opportunities to increase your sales by simply creating gender options in games (nothing more than changing some game play and skins) than it seems to me that any business worth it's beans would do so.
Well, remember the Christmas tree lights guy? If his had been real, that would have been the first, but I think this is the first confirmed slashdotting of webcams.
As a temporary Wacoan (Sic 'Em!) this is exactly what Waco needs. With this huge infrastructure in place, Waco would be in great shape economically. I think it will be a great opportunity for towns along 35. As what happened when 35 was originally built, they'll have the road moved if they don't like it, and move to it if they want it. It's win win win.
Marketing is not just the people who make advertisements and con people into buying stuff. Marketing, at it's core, is to build a consistent message that speaks to a certain audience. Now, I know that sounds really pollyanian, but this is the OSS community, so we can build it as we want. What is needed is some way to communicate to people what it is and why its better.
Take Firefox for example. It has a clear and concise marketing message: Faster and safer browsing experience. This works incredibly well because it speaks to concerns people have and creates a simple to understand idea of what Firefox is. On top of that, it is built to be an easy transition from the current "standard" in browsing.
If you want open source to spread, a marketing plan is needed. If you don't care and want to keep it in parents' basement, then you don't.
How come we can't have tv shows on iTunes? Imagine, buying a show for one dollar, or a whole sesason for 10 -- I would pay for that!
Either that or start a subscription for 20/month that allows you to choose 10 tv shows that you want to watch each month -- you pick which ones. I just don't understand why they are so unwilling to add revenue...
SpreadFirefox.com has been around for quite sometime with the sole goal of...spreading firefox. They hold contests for getting people to sign up, encourage people to put Firefox "stickers" on their website, and provide resources for people to make their own firefox posters. They are a valuable asset to the Mozilla team as well as the entire OSS community.
There's a great quote when he's talking about the new Windows Media Player for PPC:
I must say that I'm not at all thrilled with Windows Media Player 10. For one thing, I find it's interface unpleasent. For another, it has a downright aggrivating habit when listening to music with the screen turned off. Every time you pause the music, the screen turns on. And it doesn't turn off when you unpause the music. It just stays on. I assume that this was done to prevent people from accidently leaving the machine on and paused with the screen off, but they way it was handled is just idiotic, forcing you to check the screen every time you pause. Microsoft should be slapped.
Oddly enough, that's how I feel about them in general.

True! Also, there is no penalty for using Firefox. Sure there is activex and some sites designed specifically for IE, but you can switch to IE if necessary in about 10 seconds. Changing an OS means changing everything. It means reinstalling everything you need -- if it's available in that OS.

5 bucks a month is pretty cheap for outstanding features.
What if he never knows the identity of his submitters? He cannot be held liable for not knowing his sources.

Except that a tracker is only a few k instead of 100 megs of data. Much better odds it will stay up.
