  1. Re:Interesting on Malaysia Says Piracy (Might Be) OK for Learning · · Score: 1

I would say that your observation that students who pirate stuff now will have money later to buy all the software they now "need" because they are so used to them. I lived in the Philippines for 12 years, which is similar to Malaysia in terms of education, and pirating is rampant; however, these kids who live on a few hundred dollars a year now have skills that will make them invaluable in the workplace. Perhaps this can be seen as a tool to help the poor be competitive with the rich (Good ol' Robin Hood).

Yeah, it seems that we'll first have some pretty cool uses for this, but eventually we will have the ultimate spamming utility. This is stuff that marketing people with no ethics dream of.

Also, wouldn't it give a lot of people an insanity defense for killing people, "The voices in my head told me to do it!!"?

  3. Dallas Meetup on Slashdot Readers Visit Meatspace · · Score: 1

We had ten people RSVP and five of us showed up, so it seems our 50% is not as bad as we thought. Our venue changed an hour before the meetup to some bowling lane, and we ditched that pretty quick. It was mostly a good discussion of the awaited Perl 6, multiCase or under_score, and the introduction of Fark which, I might add, is friggin hilarious. We are in the process of looking for beer sponsors -- Sam Adams, do you hear us?

I set up a PHP database of recipes from my mother and I set up a computer in the kitchen for them. I also ported it to a HanDBase database for all of our palms so we always have it on the go. Not only is it seachable, it's organizable by the ingredients you currently have and ease of preperation.

Another loophole is that there can be direct agreements with artists that will bypass this entire payment scheme. So stations like GrooveSalad, which uses mostly unsigned, or very unknown signed bands, will be able to make an agreement with SomaFM to allow their music to be played without royalty fees. Since most of the internet radio phenomenon is about new and unsigned bands (as the parent poster noted) his really only enhances the sound and helps the underdog band even more. Perhaps...

  6. Barebones and beyond on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 1

I would definitely make your own system, like you said, you know what you want/need. I recently built one and I bought a barebones whitebox and then added on to it. It saves some of the initial hassle while still allowing you tweak it however you want.

  7. Re:Palm Vx on Ideal PDA Feature Wishlist? · · Score: 1

Ah, a fellow Vx supporter. Yes, I agree, my Vx has held out well the past 5 years, it has survived my entire high school and a year of college (oh yes, even the pool after being obnoxiously intoxicated and the many foam parties). I would simply hand a Vx to our "Ask Slashdot" friend and let him play away. I still remember the day my friend got an iPaq and was whipping it out every few minutes to show it off. Hours later we were all writing down someones bday and he hesitated and said, "I've run out of battery." Touche...

  8. Re:Well... on Ideal PDA Feature Wishlist? · · Score: 1

I still love my Palm Vx, it's battery life being the single-most amazing factor. I am ever amazed that I can go two weeks with considerable usage even 4 years after I've bought my baby. Which also speaks of it's hardiness.

  9. Spiderman 2 on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

Another major difference is that AOTC was the second part of the beginning of the movies which we know. It took a lot more thinking and knowledge of the past and future to make it more than some "shoot up parts of space" scifi. Spiderman was new, fresh, and more relational. When Spiderman 2 comes out, which it has been announced, I will be surprised if it can gross over 100 million. Sequels never do as well as the original, and that truly speaks for the brilliance of George Lucas. Now we shall see how Matrix 2 and 3 do this fall...

  11. Re:nicheness on SomaFM General Manager Answers Your Questions · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just looked at all of the CDs (30) I bought in the last 12 months, and all of them were artists I had heard on internet radio. This is mostly stuff off of GrooveSalad or Bassdrive . I live in Dallas, one of the ten largest cities in the nation, and the only electronica I get is 3 hours on saturday night -- and it's mostly house. Without internet radio, there is no way to find out about the smaller bands thus it seems these smaller bands should be irate over this. Perhaps.

I would love to see a RPG set up for this. As a sociologist, it is amazing to me the confidence that people exhibit online, while their "real" social life suffers. Perhaps this could be a breakthrough to allow that familiarity of the online world whilst providing a way to meet "real" people. Or at least, as a past poster mentioned, a way to augment their chests! lpret

  13. Worth the effort? on Migrating Your Office from Windows to Linux? · · Score: 1

The biggest question is "Is it worth the effort?" Training is the single-most expensive and time consuming issue in this debate. If you calculate the number of hours that a user will have to be personally trained AND lost work time due to inabilities AND how much they are worth an hour, you will find that maybe M$ isn't such a bad idea. Also, you will have to support the entire system yourself. Which introduces the question of how linux-fluent are you? Do you feel capable of:
    1. Training everyone
    2. Dealing with the inevitable accountants
    3. Linux specific problems
    4. Server implementation and support
    5. The problems you already have (you dont just sit around =) )

etc. the list goes on about what is now your responsibility. If only for your sanity, stay with something that these people know.

One last thought, consider the techiness of your group, it could be that some (or perhaps many) have "always been interested" in linux but don't want to try it on their own. It comes down to the people involved -- including you.

  14. International Broadcasting? on Ask the Honcho of Internet Radio's SomaFM · · Score: 2, Interesting

What stops Internet Radio from being broadcasted from another country? CARP would have a hard time trying to hunt down stations from around the world... Also, wouldn't it also be just as easy to set Internet Radio up underground? Much as warez sites exist, and mp3 sharing exists, couldn't Internet Radio be a part of that uber-h4x0r community? I hope it doesn't come down to that, but it is an option that should be reviewed since the day is coming... --lpret
