First of all, there are a number of MP3 encoders, some better than others. And if you are using the best (lame for example), you will get a pretty good encode at 128kbps: one that normal people will not be able to tell the difference between it and the real thing on normal (low-end) audio equipment and on a normal day (some distractions).
But unless you have sub-normal hearing, get yourself some good quality headphones and no distractions, and listen to some quality music that you are very familiar with, but with a lot of different kinds of sounds in it, and I bet you will then be able to tell the difference. Whether or not the difference will bother you enough to worry about it is a different story.
Ogg is a different story. You'll be hardpressed to tell the difference between 128kbps Ogg Vorbis and the real thing...
Any audiophiles want to disagree with me let me just tell you this: you are wrong.
THE SOLUTION is to have a meteor or other large object in geo-stationary orbit with an elevator up to it. This would allow us to EJECT the stuff off the planet and into deep space at a cheap cost.
It would also allow us to launch space missions cheaply as well.
It would also probably cost about as much as the money spent on Yucca mountain already.
The guy was just talking out his ass. I mean, how many times has your boss said things that were completely wrong that he obviously hadn't put much thought into, but it sounds good and he has to act like he has an opinion and knows what he's talking about. That's all there is to it.
Now the big question is, what then do you say to your boss if you can't tell him he's wrong, make him look/feel stupid and then have him hate you?
For all you slashdotters out there that claim to be Atheists, don't you really mean that you are Agnostic?
I mean, if God boomed out "I exist and don't you forget it", wouldn't you change your views? Don't claim to be Atheists unless you are willing to totally discount the idea that God might exist, which IMO no logical scientific person would do.
Instead, claim to be Agnostic. It sounds better, and let's face it: if you don't believe in God how can you believe for sure that there is no God?
So is this why I can't get a job? Interesting, the only people who have called me about a job was in fact Microsoft... twice... Maybe they're on to me? Maybe they want to force me to convert by choking off all my money?
Is seems to me that 2.4.19 should be released already, especially since it's been like 4 months and the 2.4.18 release was bungled. WTF is up?
Put an rc release then release already!
I am getting increasingly uneasy about using a kernel in which development on it appears to have STOPPED! I mean, the whole world uses this kernel branch pretty-much...
So can someone tell me why we haven't seen any activity on the 2.4 kernel for a LONG time? When are we finally going to see 2.4.19? I really am starting to actually feel uncomfortable using the 2.4 kernel when it appears that development on it has come to a stand-still.
Does anyone else agree with me that the 2.4 maintainer needs to pick up the pace on releases?
I'd just rebuild the kernel if I were you after you install 7.3. But you could also just save off the kernel file and use it again as your kernel after you install 7.3. It's also important though to have your kernel source tree available in/usr/src/.
Good luck!
Fritz 7 might very well be better than DBII regardless of hardware. It has been said that if you double the speed of the hardware, you get at most 30 elo points. I believe this is an optimistic number.
Actually, if you look at the latest computer tournament results here,
you will see that the software can make hundreds of elo points difference on the same hardware.
So don't assume that 2 orders of magnitude of computing power will make up for the general ineptness of some piece of software from IBM.
In the world of computer chess, software advances are WAY more important than hardware advances.
The end-all be-all of chess was not embodied in any creation by IBM, that's for sure. Computer-chess history did not end with Deep Blue, and is still alive and well on the ICC and freechess. The software that is being developed right now is A LOT better than anything the Deep Blue team ever came up with, and I have a feeling that if IBM hadn't pulled the plug on Deep Blue it would have probably lost its next match.
But don't take my word for it, already Chess software is approaching the strength of Deep Blue by using hardware 1/100th as powerful. I'm sure that in 5-10 years the best machines will regularly beat the world champions on normal PCs.
Turn on the "Sticky" bit. That tells the OS that the process is priority and keep it in memory if at all possible.

Alcohol is 7 calories per gram. That might help keep you warm...

2.5.20 appears to be out already at kernel.org.

But Marcelo should still be making prepatch releases.

Why would you be screwed? Just migrate to 7.3. It's not that hard. You can even hire me to help you. Good luck!
How the hell am I gonna shop at K-mart and acquire a 1979 Ford F-150 without a job or money?! Think, buddy, think!
What on Earth are you talking about?
