Stuff that cannot be easily stolen via some simple data transfer or bit level copy over a network.
For example, own gold, silver, Real Estate, Automobiles, etc. Pay for these things... do not use credit cards, only use cash. Place the titles/proof of ownership in a safety deposit box at the bank and give your lawyer and next of kin copies as well. Now, let's see some foreign guy steal your ID... who cares?
Before this gets out of hand, let it be known that SP2 is only downloaded it is not installed.
In order to install the service pack, the user has to be an admin and aceept the EULA as well as click through several disclaimers before manually installing the service pack.
Google for it... it's proven that consumers pay 33 - 66% more whenever they pay with plastic (that's why McDonald's takes CCs). It's a mental thing. When you're laying down cash, you instantly realize how much less you're gonna come away with and the marketers can't track you.
We have a Python script on our laptops that send netstat, ipconfig, route info via email when they boot. When a laptop is stolen and the thief is dumb enough to use it online, we can subponea the ISP and walk to their door. But the last one that was stolen was in an apartment building that had 5 or 6 open WAPS. We knew that the laptop was in one of the apartments, but the cops could not get a search warrant for all the apartments within 150' radius of the open WAP that the stolen laptop was on... long story short, they got away with it.
Try to open a 2 GB file in notepad and see what happens. Unless you've got more than 2 GB of memory that's currently just sitting around, bad things are gonna happen.
why the hell can't the update agent handle these fixes? why do user have to manually upgrade when a new security threat is found? IE beats the hell out of FF when it comes to patching.
OK, I'll give you 2 dollars if you give my friend 10. That is writing off interest in a nutshell. You fell for it hook, line and sinker. Believe what you like. 98% of people in debt think they have a *great* deal. Why not live below your means for 2 - 3 years and put down 50% or more and buy something that you can actually afford to own. How's that for a novel concept. Our grandparents did it.
No tax benefit for me as I understand that it's not a benefit. Getting a 28% refund/write-off on thousands paid in interest is not a benefit, unless you're stupid and you believe whatever you're told. Here, I'll give you 2 dollars if you give me 10. Would you do that? That's what you're doing when you're getting that great tax break you seem so fond of.
As far as owing lots of houses, it's business, not personal. Perhaps if you were smart (conservative) and refused to be a fool to lenders (who BTW take no risk whatsoever as Freddie and Fannie buy any loan that comes their way, turn them into securities and sells to Japanese). The only sob story here is people buying more than they can afford. They don't deserve it and they're not entitled to it either. One day, they'll understand that they have to work for what they own... like me.
I own a few condos that I rent and one that I live in. I, personally, am not priced out of the market, but am too smart to buy at this point in time (just like I wouldn't buy Cisco in Feb 2000). My wife and I have a 6 figure family income. It's strange that you mention people "finding themselves priced out of the market" that is a classic symptom of a bubble. You overpaid, huh? Are you regretting it yet? Did you roll the closing cost and the down payment into the loan?
This is the type of advice that got us into this mess! Tax deduction for paying interest? How stupid is it to pay 10,000 in interest so you can deduct 28% of that amount from your taxes? Duh.
Save up as much of a downpayment as possible and pay it off as soon as possible. You can't beat lenders at their own game.
Home prices have yet to crash. Everyone keeps talking about how we had a 'soft landing'... it was soft because of low interest rates that have allowed people who really can't afford housing to get into the game. Wait until the housing bubble pops. Then, we'll get what we should have got when techs crashed... it's gonna be painful, real painful. All one needs to do is read a bit of history to understand how insane real estate prices in America have become. American debt is at an all-time high. We owe way too much money. Home prices have been going up by 20 and 30% annually in many areas... pay checks haven't... is it just me, or do others find this odd?
Try to grep a PDF file on Windows XP through the built in search function. It simply doesn't work. PDF's are encoded... they're not searchable (read up on it at wikipedia)... unless you have ghostscript installed or something. Mac OSX handles this nicely.
SP2 will not automatically be installed. It will download automatically, but someone still has to accept the license agreement and manually install the service pack. There is nothing automatic about the install. Please stop spreading FUD about SP2!
This isn't a gadget, but it's a life saver when you need to add new gadets, run new cable or fix a busted pipe. It's cheap, comes in many different sizes and styles and can be installed/repaired by anyone.
What planet are you from? These updates are not for wine, they are for MS products. Just because the product in question is running on wine doesn't mean it should not have access to updates.
One day, America will be a big 'service economy' where we:
a) Produce Nothing.
b) Consume Everything.
c) Print lots and lots of worthless dollar bills.
Wrong! You're not responsible for fraud that someone else has commited in your name.

W can do anything ;)

THERE IS NO AUTOMATIC INSTALL OF SP2
Mod this liar down! Automatic Updates does not install service packs. PERIOD. Only idiots or liars would say such a thing.

Same here. I wrote a forkbomb using Python... had to pweroff the machine (push and hold the power button). I'm running Debian Testing.

When the altruistic geeks of open source talk of no longer supporting a processor, you know things have got to be bad. Sun needs help... now!!!
Man, when will people learn that one cannot beat Intel when it comes to R&D and their blitzkreg-like manufacturering of processors?

mod parent up. most slashdot dumbasses don't know what a 'hosts' file is. malware is already tampering with it. here's how it works in a nutshell:
bankofamerica.com = phishers_ip_addy
So, even when you type in 'bankofamerica.com' in the browser's address bar, you still go to the bad guy's web server. ok?

You can't grep PDF files (among others). WinFS will solve this.
This may be a stupid question, but here goes: Why don't these guys use languages (Python, for example) that are memory friendly?

That would be business as usual in America, not extortion.
