  1. Suck it up... on Pay vs. Happiness · · Score: 1

Earn as much money as you can... legally. Save as much as you can, and when you can afford it, retire. Life isn't about 'being happy now' it's about playing the game right, so one day you can tell everyone to fuck-off and then go and 'be really happy'.

It never ceases to amaze me how people piss-away their income on cars, gadgets, software, jewelry, etc... it reminds me of how white Europeans gave shiny beads and pretty rocks to native Americans for their land and food. Your income is valauble... that's why so many people try to convince you to give it to them (cell phone bills, car payments, etc).

Bring down the big bucks and then drop out of the rat race.

The most striking difference between the BSDs and GNU/Linux is that the BSDs are completely built and distributed by one devel team (the kernel, the filesystem, the c library, etc). While Linux is a mostly parts from different groups... GNU/Linux is top-notch, best of breed (gcc, reiserfs, bash, linux kernel, etc.) for developers and they'll always run it in some form and companies such as Apple will always capitalize on their work.

It works for everyone. Geeks get to have fun. Apple gets a new lease on life and in the end, the normal people in the world will benefit.

  19. Deflation on Technology Paradise Lost · · Score: 3, Interesting

Hardware is getting cheaper and will continue to do so. I built a computer for $1500 in 2000. Today, it's probably worth $100 (maybe not that much) today. A 1 GB Ram module for it retails for around $120. Even if I bought and installed the Ram module, I *still* probably couldn't sell the computer for more than $100.

I see people advertising 'Almost New' HP and Dell laptops on ebay. They sell for a fraction of the original price. Service and support are what costs *real* money these days. Three year service contracts start out at $350. When you have to buy a $350 service contract on a $600 PC, you know where the *true* costs are for the manufacturer.

That 1 GB memory module probably only cost about 20 bucks or so to make. That's why it'd be foolosh to buy it new and pay $120 for it.
