light houses not only let you know where the coast line is, but often where submerged rocks are, which would not show up on radar. An example is the Duxbury Pier light in Plymouth Harbor (MA). While the rocks the light warns boaters from are clearly visible during low tides, at high tides they are completely submerged. The light marks the entrance into three different channels in Cape Cod Bay, and without this light there would be daily accidents.

Definately a good read, though Preston drones on with details at some points, and is very vague at others.

  5. why go smaller? on Replace Your Music....Again · · Score: 1

Personally, I think that by going smaller I will have more of a chance of losing the darn things. Right now I have cd case that I'm not worried about losing; its either on my desk or in my backpack and I know when I open it up all of my cd's will be in there. Why would I want to switch my media to something the size of a fingernail? Think about it... how often did you lose Lego pieces in the most random places? The smaller the object, the easier it is to misplace it.

Also, in the article it says that the new technology would be easier to operate than a cd. How is placing a cd in the tray difficult? it seems like trying to manipulate a very small piece of paper would be a little more difficult. Not that it would be hard, but I like being able to press a button and put a cd in without looking or thinking about where it has to go. I believe the cd will be around for much longer than five years, regardless of what new technology comes out.

In the end, it comes down to ease of use.

To travel faster than the speed of light is impossible...Using the oh-so cliche E=mc^2 you quickly find that by going the speed of light matter turns into energy. There are also other relatavistic effects to consider such as time dilation when approaching the speed of light.

I live less than 200 feet from high tension power lines and have never experenced any problems with the wireless network in my house.

The only real problem I had was putting an addition on my house. In my town, it is against bylaws to put a permanent structure closer than 100 feet from power lines. When my wife and I were in the process of putting one on we had to have our yard surveyed four times, and even then we had to change our plans. The foundation of the new addition is now 100' 1" away from the lines. You may want to think about this, or check your town bylaws if you plan on adding to the house in the future.

Earlier this year a couple of friends and myself started an after school linux club. The administration was a little apprehensive at first because of attacks on the network the previous year. We presented a complete outline of our intentions, got a teacher to be an advisor and did all the necessary paperwork, we were even able to get some old hardware (both desktops and laptops) donated to install various distros on, while at the same time teaching those interested the pros of using open-source software. Navigation using the CLI was taught first, along with basic commands, and topics expanded from there. Overall i think the program was/has been a success. Through teaching others, I have furthered my understanding, and spread the benifits of open-source.

this reminds me of the uproar that was caused a couple of years ago when the FDA wanted to irradiate meat to prevent further outbreaks of E.Coli etc. If the public remains uninformed about different types/uses of radiation there will be little progress in this field. Beta decay can be stopped easily by a sheet of paper, nevermind whatever the manufacturer encases the isotope in.
