If we suggest the government step in and regulate folks say let the market decide. Well, the market just decided. People think Bushnell's behavior was worthy of being punished for; with punishment meaning getting deprived of some honors he would otherwise be due.
A group of gamers decided not to honor one of the big wigs of the industry because of his past transgressions. Nobody's forgotten what he did, and that goes for the good and the bad.
are due to Nintendo fans who sat the Wii U Gen out. It's good for Nintendo that their core customers are back, but I suspect the sales will slow once they've saturated their existing market. e.g. this won't be a repeat of the Wii.
I can't speak for the UK, but in America a lot of our Crime reduction strategies are really just backhanded racial segregation. Our entire drug policy is. This is why black people are several times more likely to serve time for minor drug offenses and serve more time to boot. One way to keep people in their place is to have selectively enforced laws that let you target undesirables.
for moral absolutism. If we can't look back and say "That was wrong and they shouldn't have done it" then we don't really have a compelling argument against the behavior in question. If something morally wrong is acceptable in context than all you need to do to make it acceptable again is change the context. Regression becomes easy.
This isn't idle chit-chat either. There's a lot of folks who pine for the 'good 'ole days' when sexual harassment not only went unpunished but reporting it _was_ punished. When it wasn't considered abuse of power but a perk. They call themselves 'conservative' but I'd rather they were labeled 'regressive'. Either way they exist, and they're working to make a world like the 50s, 60s and 70s real again.
If you're a man its easy to look at these things and just think of them as awkward passes. You can do that because, well, you've probably got 40-60 lbs more muscle on you than the girl in question. There's interviews with women abused by Weinstein when they were terrified he was going to rape them. He wasn't, but not being mind readers they didn't know that, and, well, he most certainly _could_. Try to imagine you're alone with someone that has 50lbs more muscle than you and wants to have sex right now. This is a real concern for most women. It's also _incredibly_ uncomfortable to acknowledge.
If you want to get a better idea of what I'm banging on about read this. But my point is there's a real issue here and one that men (and a lot of women) don't want to confront. But confronting it is the right thing to do...
with the way he treated his workers in China I'm all for this. He was also an absolute dick to Wozniak and while the Woz forgave him I wonder how that would have ended up if instead of Woz eventually getting rich he'd been completely ripped off and left penniless. There's no shortage of broke engineers who's designs were central to the development of computers after all.
Despite the famous RDF there's plenty of folks who don't like Jobs for plenty of reasons. So yeah, lets take him down a few pegs.
He acknowledged the behavior and excused it with "It's was the late 60s / early 70s, that's just what we did".
The behavior was wrong then and it's wrong now. There can and should be consequences for these kinds of actions. As a parent I _want_ there to be consequences. I don't want people to think they can get away with this crap because nobody wants to talk badly about somebody who also happened to do good things. If we did that the Cosby Show would still be in syndication.
we don't need cars to do this. We can just set up cameras everywhere. The UK already does this in a lot of places. This is just somebody at Ford patenting something so they can say they got a patent.
That me buying 2 new iPhones due to performance degradation is just a happy coincidence, right? And before you ask a they're for my kid. Posting this from a $220 Android that I won't upgrade until 5G gets cheap.
It really is, at least up until the 50s and 60s. There were several times when single payer was put on the table in our history and each time it was shot down because the progressives insisted it cover everybody and the racists insisted they shouldn't have to pay for minorities. At this point the private insurance companies have so much money they can just buy elections; and if there's ever a threat of single payer passing is life or death for them to kill it. So even without racism playing it's part it's damn near impossible to get it through.
Our health care sucks, particularly in rural areas. And you can't blame that on the US being spread out. Look at Canada. Better outcomes and just as if not more spread out population centers.
with fairly healthy people. My bro worked for a small company that tried the same. He had some health problems so he was politely told if he signed up for the insurance he'd be fired.
The best way to do insurance of any kind is to have as many people chip in as possible. Buying power gets rates down, and that's what's got the health care industry worried. As more and more companies consolidate an buy each other out we've got fewer and fewer employers, but that also means that if a few of them get together they can exert enormous pressure.
Of course, if you take this to it's logical conclusion the largest pool of insurable people is everybody; e.g. single payer health care. But once you've got a for profit insurance industry it's almost impossible to do away with it since they'll spend every penny they have to make sure folks don't realize they don't want or need yet another middle man.
health care. You can't have a for profit system built around something complex, expensive and life or death. Because people can just keep raising the price and you'll pay it or you'll die. Hell, our for profit system of agriculture only barely works with a _lot_ of government interference and subsidies and even then it relies heavily on borderline slave labor. This is why America spends more and gets worse outcomes to take care of less people. It's also why it costs $32k to give birth here and we still have the highest maternal mortality rates in the developed world.
that ignored millions of pro NN comments while promoting millions of obviously fake anti-NN comments. They can absolutely have it both ways. It's one of the advantages of being utterly, totally without principle. Question is, what are you gonna do about it?
That's well on it's way. You can have a two tiered menu. Cheap stuff made by machines and more expensive stuff that still needs a cook. That's the part of Automation folks always forget, you don't have to go all in. If you automate even 20% it has a huge impact on your bottom line (and a huge impact on layoffs....)
that's why. You can occasionally pay them like crap (parts runners come to mind) but then you have to deal with ex-cons, drug dealers and retirees. When it comes to drivers your choices are paying at least 2x minimum wage or hiring basket cases or folks who don't really need the money. Businesses are eager to change that.
eliminate the need for low wage employees. You don't need affordable housing and public services for them if you don't need them in a 100 mile radius.
Also, hadn't really thought just how rife for automation the Hotel industry is until now. Outside of the expensive ones where it's just for show I'll bet the only people on site in 10 years will be a few security guards to make sure nobody breaks in or sneaks too many of their friends into a room.
you can't just ride down to your local park. Cops will nail you for riding on the side walk and there's no bike paths. Drivers are generally hostile to bicyclists. I'm a roadie and I ride a lot, but I also make decent money and live away from the center of town without a 90 minute commute. I got incredibly lucky that way.
Going down to the city library isn't exactly getting out. It's a drive, followed by being inside for a bit, followed by another drive. Thanks to urban sprawl Most of the community events in my city are 50-60 minute drives for me, but YMMV. They're also not usually free or even cheap. There's no money in the city coffers to subsidize them.
We treat them so poorly I just kind of assumed they were...
he lost a GDC award. That's not exactly what I'd call the gulag. And while we're at it, we're not giving out awards for those commercials either.

There's lots of other reasons to rescind his status.

I wouldn't want my daughter alone with Mike Pence either.
I like to do a little game where I replace 'women' with another minority. Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, Jews. Take your pick.

single payer healthcare, just like the rest of the civilized world.

Anyway, Single Payer Now. Medicare for All.

that was the ideal size for government. To me that always sounded like "Small enough that our mega corps can bully it into submission".
