this cost real money. Worse, there's going to be decades of increased oversight that will cost even more. Somewhere is a billionaire who's net worth is now slightly less. That is not something we stand for in the world. Blood had to be spilled. I'm surprised we stopped here.
how many of them died rich and happy. It ends well all the time. Only very rarely do the elite get their comeuppance. And with modern militaries, drones and information control I'm not sure they ever will again. Not the real ones.
The solution was to either clear the brush manually
From what I can tell the funding to do that got slashed. Budget Cuts. The funding to put out the small fires did not get slashed. And eventually you get one of these disasters. As for building houses, that's life. People need a place to live and work.
but I've heard from more than one place that California hasn't been keeping up with their maintenance. People know the droughts are a problem, they just weren't doing anything about it (controlled burns). Nobody wants to spend the money doing it until a few towns burn down.
I live in Az, and I'll tell you this much: We get fires all the time. Ever time it happens we bail out the rich guys who's mansions burn. The trailer parks? Not so much. It's been a bone of contention around here for decades but our local politics are hopelessly corrupt.
Unless you can get the electorate to stop voting in "tough on crime" politicians then you're never going to see this go away. You'd need a top down approach of people willing to uphold the letter and spirit of the law. You'd also need to keep those people in office so they could remake the courts that have long since been staffed with the kinds of judges who favor all this. That usually means decidedly left wing people (most "libertarian" politicians turn tough on crime once they're in office). Folks are too worried about their taxes going up or their corporate overloards getting angry over their voting choices to vote that way.
particularly against a particular group. In the US we have a thing called "Dog Whistling" where you say racist and violent things in an off handed manor. A senatorial candidate here (Roy Moore) just told his constituents all jews were going to hell but said it like so:
"No matter how much money he’s got, he's still going to the same place that people who don't recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going"
To the casual listener it sounds like he said Soros was going to hell, but if you're an Evangelical you understand the sub-text is that all jews are going to hell. That's a dog whistle.
Anyway, Europe doesn't tolerate dog whistling. You can't say things like what's above and not get censored. I'm on the fence with whether that's a good thing. They've got ample cause to be afraid of unregulated speech (what with the Nazi's coming out of Europe) and it's not as though the US doesn't regulate speech (shouting fire in a theater). There's a sci-fi book called Distractions by Bruce Sterling about how in the future you can assassinate just about anyone by planting the idea in some random kooks head. It doesn't sound too far from reality anymore. Especially in a country that can elect a man like Trump.
And I insisted on it. She was upset because a) I pull her leg a lot and b) I kept insisting for years. Around the time she learned to use the internet she came to me in a huff and said "You're a software pirate!".
Sadly me piratin' days be over. I use legally obtained copies of all the software I have, even the games. Steam & Gog made piracy obsolete. And it's not worth the trouble to pirate Microsoft OSes.
to be fair to Asus, at least on newegg the lower end RX 560s are clearly labeled with the number of stream processors. I've noticed slight variations of specs for years. I compared about 10 different cards when I bought my bro's 1060 6gb before settling on a Gigabyte.
our Supreme Court already rules on this. There was a company streaming live OTA tv, one antennae per user. Even offered to limit the service to local residence. They got shut down when they lost their case. If you'd like that right you're gonna need a new law.
Now, as for the odds of getting said law, good luck. I've said this several times: a lot of people in America are hurting. They're worried about food and shelter. They're scared. They're also easily manipulated as folks full of fear tend to be. If you want nice things like free OTA broadcasts online and net neutrality you have to take care of them. Otherwise they're gonna go to the polls and put folks in office that give your issues a pass.
infant mortality has been dropping for the last century. I don't think you understand what real poverty is like. We've sort of forgot because a) the War on Poverty did and continues to do a lot and b) what we couldn't eliminate we moved to China, Mexico and India. Yes, we've mostly cleaned the air here, but in large parts of China, India and some of Mexico it's as bad as it was in the 20s here.
Also even before the EPA was founded there was work being done to clean up the air. Especially in the 30s-60s before private jets were common and telecoms made it so the rich could manage their holdings from afar.
watch their games live. The excitement's gone if you know the outcome. Now if these are live streams they've got a point. Getting to see football on TV can be crazy expensive. Packages start at $120/mo in my area and go up from there.
That babies born to mother's exposed to air pollution are smaller, but their just as healthy are the other babies. And some women might want a smaller baby.
Instead of Republican. Obama was very much center right. What's needed is left wing politics. Single payer healthcare, infrastructure spending, progressive taxes, college paid for by the public, ending our 8 wars (yes, we're at war in 8 different countries all under the same authorizations Congress have for Iraq) . We need left wing action, not just left wing rhetoric.
By worry that we here on the left have pointless kooks that are worse than useless too. For the record, the correct 'we could fund' talking point it that we could pay our national debt off in ten years with the money single payer healthcare saves.
Here's hoping your not an American. He fights every year to get access to his meds. The side effects of his illness mean he can't really work. Good luck to you man. Godspeed.
Keep putting millionaires and billionaires in charge. I'm sure they'll drain the swamp any moment now. And if they're not to your liking how about a nice blue dog democrat? He (or she) will promise not to raise your taxes, doesn't hate gay people and won't touch Social Security or Medicare (or anyone over 55). Remember folks, if you don't keep putting pro corporate, right wing people in charge those tax and spend liberals will raise your taxes. And if you're readying this and you're American than I know 60% of you are living paycheck to paycheck (google it) and can't afford it, right?
The important thing is to remember to know your place, stay in your class, respect your betters, and don't ever screw with the aristocracy. Don't even suggest taking their money away, that would be morally wrong. You learned that in grade school economics. Capitalism got you into this mess and only capitalism can get you out of this mess.
Can you tell I'm bitter and angry? I don't suppose there's anybody on this forum that can make an ounce of that anger go away, is there? Well guess what, there's millions of guys just like me. And guess what happens when there's too many of us? What happened in the 20s? How about the 40s? Anyone want to take a crack at proving me wrong and injecting a little hope into this thread?
it's called a VPN. And you're refurbed Thinkpad might very well have come from my company. Companies want reliability and performance. They're pretty indifferent how they get it. Right now they get it by swapping out the laptop ever 3-4 years. Maybe changing to a CPU that doesn't run hotter than the sun and warp the mobo over time is a valid solution too. My company pays $1200 for it's laptops. $600 would be a bargain if it got us similar performance. And who knows, 4 GB might be plenty for an ARM.
call me when type-I can be reversed. My Dad got type 2 because he got fat. Lost some weight and he's fine now. This is something we've known for years. It's fine that it's been proven. Science likes to prove things and that's generally a good thing. But I'd hardly call it watershed.
to provide you with internet. Comcast admitted that in their SEC filing. They can lie to you, they can lie to congress, they can lie to their priest for Christ's sake. But they can not and will not lie to their investors.
As for that wire, you and me already paid for it in the form of massive subsidies and tax breaks. They didn't spend a dime of their own money. You don't get rich spending your own money. That's for chumps & working stiffs like me and you.
we'll still be corded in paying for internet. And thanks to the death of Net Neutrality we'll be paying more than ever for the exact same (or less) content.
this is how most democracies and through them empires die. The only difference is we've got a media reporting on it while it's happening. Damned if I can do anything to stop it. I'm knee deep in it. It's all I can do to survive.
the Republican party. Because once an idea like this is out there that's about the only thing that's going to stop it. I say that not to be partisan (though Lord knows I am) but because this idea was able to be flown in the first place and hasn't completely ended the Rebublican's mid-term elections. Seriously, you've got a party that is supposed to be in favor of limited gov't who's head (like it or not Trump's the president, so defacto head) just came out in favor of a secret police. Either the party cannot stand for that or the party is going to throw in with that. It's too extreme an idea for it to go any other way. And once a party starts trying to get something like this they're not going to stop. To do so would be to admit they did wrong, and the entire thing would unravel if they started doing that.
The trouble with the Republican party is, oddly, Clinton (the Mr, not the Ms). Bill moved the Dems far right to form an alliance of economically right wing and socially left wing to get him into office. It worked, but it left the Republicans without an identity. So they moved right, hard right so they could establish a new brand. They're going to keep going, and this is part of that. The next step is an actual dictatorship. Trump's lawyer has already said he's above the law (e.g. that he can't obstruct justice). And now this. The Republican party cannot survive this. Well, it can, but if it does Democracy in America can't.
way I see it last thing I need (as a member of the working class) is more automation. I see lots of folks railing against socialism and nobody giving any answers about what to do when there's suddenly millions of jobs just gone. I hear the same tired crap about new jobs in a new economy that I heard when the outsourcing began in the 90s and carried through into the 2000s. Anybody else remember biotech? Turns out you don't need that many biotech engineers. Not at the level of work I can do. If I was a genius maybe, but if everybody was a genius we wouldn't be in this mess, would we.

AMD can't police all their partners. There's too many of them. That said, I"m a little shocked to see Asus' name on the bad boy list with Power Color.
