    you can't get hired without a 4 year degree because you're automatically not qualified, meaning the employer gets to bring in a (much cheaper) worker on a Visa. That's why these schools fail. They had them all over the place in the 80s and 90s before the flood of visa workers.

  2. but it'll just get circumvented through shell companies. A better solution would be a parliament system of proportional representation, and end to the electoral college and Senate systems. Careful regulation of gerrymandering and finally the crown jewels: Mandatory Voting. Everybody votes. You can send in a blank ballot if you want, but you're going to vote. And since everyone votes there's no such thing as voter suppression.

    is that if you did away with all government regulation and power then it couldn't be abused. The funny thing is if you make the same argument for guns the folks railing against government get kinda upset.

  4. I still had to have a phone line and I only had 1 provider. Free markets and telecom don't really work. It's too expensive/difficult to build the infrastructure.

    in whatever country's, or hell State's (I'm a Yank) got the lowest taxes. I could enjoy all the benefits of civilization without having to pay for them. And all those suckers who keep voting in chaps to get low taxes for themselves would foot the bill while sit pretty. Unfortunately I'm stuck in the same boat as the suckers (minus the voting for people with nonsensical promises).

I'm not jealous, I just would really like it if you didn't use them to drive at unsafe speeds while the rain's set visibility to zero. Those of us stuck in old cars trying to get the hell off the freeway when we got stuck in a sudden torrential downpour would really appreciate it if you'd stop zipping by at 85 mph just because your steering wheel vibrates to let you know you're drifting out of the lane.

    it's too expensive. If I could afford it I'd just fly a plane. If I can't afford it then I can't afford it. The only thing this might do is soak up millions (billions?) of taxpayer dollars and maybe some gullible investors.

    I'm not opposed to public transit. I think it's ridiculous that I'm probably going to rent a car in my home city, drive down to where my kid goes to college and then drive back instead of taking a bloody train like a civilized nation. But Hyperloop is not how you do it. Worse, the huge waste of money will be used for generations as an example of why public transit doesn't work. Fuck Hyperloop.

    the problem is when you take exception to anyone outside your bubble getting any kind of help or basic services. The whole "I don't want to pay for it" club. It's why charity doesn't work as a broad solution to combat social problems. Folks are all for helping people as long as it's 'their' people. Once solidarity breaks down the rich pick us all apart. Google the Union Cookie joke.

At best he's another economically right / socially center politicians that'll cut taxes on the rich, cut services for the middle class (e.g. school funding, unemployment, medicare/medicaid). At worst he's another wolf in sheep's clothing that'll hand us over to Wallstreet the way the Clinton's did and roll back the progressive agenda Bernie was working on.

    that comment on folks cloths unless they're way out of norm. I can't remember the last time a guy said 'Nice Shirt' to me without following it up with 'got an interview today?'. It's just not something guys do. Girls do, but not guys. So when a guy does it, well, it's so odd it's automatically suspect. It's got nothing to do with PC. It's just weird, and everybody knows it.

    Also, since when is fostering a work environment where women can feel comfortable something bad? I'm reminded of that Niel Gaiman quote (you can google it). If you want to talk exceptions, please stop bringing up the feminazi that gave you a D in your community college English course that one summer. She doesn't represent the American left any more than the KKK do the right. You've got your nut jobs, we've got ours. Difference is we largely marginalize ours. You just elected one president.

    and at most take comments. The president's twitter feed does not belong to the Republican party. If it did you might have a point. He's been using it more or less to conduct official business. He's made it public with his own actions. It's a little late to back out now.

    and older folks are worried about politics. We're getting old enough to worry about pensions, medicare, our kid's job prospects, etc, etc. Politics affects _everything_. Like the internet? Then you better pay attention to politics. Remember, it's not just news for nerds, it's also stuff that matters. The President getting impeached and replaced with a far right, intensely religious VP? Yeah. That Matters.

    and Pence in. Trump is unpredictable. He's come out in favor and against single payer health care, restrictions on work visas, tariffs and a whole host of populist ideas that the folks that actually own the media aren't too keen on. Now, it's not that they expect Trump to actually _do_ any of that (he's still one of them after all) but they don't want folks to even know a progressive agenda is a possibility. So Trump's out, Pence is in and the mega-corp status quo is maintained. Maybe with a tad more religious furor but that doesn't affect them personally. Nothing much ever does...

    being the only OS I've ever seen in my life move a window around screen w/o tearing. Yeah, it doesn't make much difference, but you'd think in 2017 my quad core CPU and 8 gigs of ram could do what a 400 mghz AMD K6 did in 1996 with 512 mb ram.

    There was a major highway closure coming up. Somebody suggested building a roadway to re-route traffic. It's be useful long and short term and stop traffic jams. Cheap too.

    The local fast food joints bought off the city council to squash it. See, if you're in traffic for 2 hours every day you're that much more likely to stop for Mickey D's or Burger King on the way home. The got caught and absolutely nothing came of it (besides the aforementioned traffic delays).

    You'd be surprised how much corruption there is locally. Local newspapers used to report on it, but then they got bought out by mega corps with no interest reporting such things.

    a. Microsoft is not hip. You need to be hip to sell phones because like movies the sales are driven by what teenagers buy.

    b. Microsoft, for whatever reason, refused to give rank and file phone salesmen a spiff. So if I went into a Sprint/AT&T/T-Mobile/Whatever and bought an iPhone or Android that salesmen got a few bucks. He/she got nothing for a Windows phone. So they were promptly relegated to the bottom of a filing cabinet in a disused lavatory behind a sign marked 'beware of leopard'.

    and not even doing a good job of it. And yes, they were paying that. Keep in mind the rate didn't kick in until $1 mil in 1950s money (about 12 mil today). The modern day tax loop holes are an artifact of changes to CEO pay, loan structuring to the ultra wealthy (0% tax rates), etc. Finally, you couldn't offshore your money because you were frightened the commies were going to steal it.

    How many people paid that tax rate? Hint: not many.

    That was kind of the point. You don't _want_ that many people making that kind of money. If you do then either you've got Zimbabwe style hyper inflation or you've got out of control wealth inequality. Neither is good for a society.

    And yeah, I'm dreaming. People are awful. We killed 200,000 civilians in Iraq and didn't bat an eye. We're selling White Phospher to the Saudis. The crap we're supporting in Yemen is horrifying. If that kinda crap can fly then I don't see how single payer can work. But hey, what am I suppose to do? If you just let the world's horrors crush you you'll be dead in no time. Either from stress or your own hand.

    Folks don't work less if you tax them, especially rich folks. We had a 90% marginal tax rate in the 50s and it was the largest period of growth in US History. Growth slowed to a crawl after tax cuts for the rich started making it a better deal for them to sit on all their money than to spend it.

    Minimum Wage does the same thing to a point. And yeah, I can already hear you typing up that tired old talking point about a $200 minimum wage. But think about what happened before minimum wage. Company Stores. Wage Slavery. Yes, there are countries that get by without it, but they're mostly heterogeneous enough that they won't tolerate treating people they see as fellow countrymen as slaves. That doesn't work in our melting pot of easily preyed on minorities.

    Basically, as long as you're paying attention and careful to adjust as needed and only as needed there are no trade offs. The trade offs come into play when you try to apply ideology and deeply held beliefs beyond: Everybody deserves a good ilfe.
