The only way to terminate SCO _right now_ would be to buy them. And that would reward the idiots.
Any other method such as patent infringement lawsuits, etc... would just cause a prolonged death.
or Linux. I guess if its Linux you're after its great.
But the reason people buy Apple machines is because of OS X.
Think of it. Full UNIX. Yet a usable GUI. Common applications.
instead of the names?
This is stupid. Half the people who visit here sound like childish morons. Who cares what its called? I did not come here to read all the "funny" ++c++ jokes.
I came here to read a discussion on the merits of all those changes and such.
You DO know that most of Cocoa sits ATOP CARBON????
There is nothing wrong with Carbon. Its just that Cocoa is a framework that does things for you, while in Carbon you have to it all yourself.
I don't think the issue is Aqua. I think Aqua is a GREAT UI. However, its rough around the edges. I agree the mix of metal and Aqua needs to be fixed - and Metal especially needs more work. But its not anything that the old OS was better at.
Look, I know this guy. If you want - look at my website. I'm a Pocket PC developer. pt is married/fianceed to a friend of mine at Microsoft who used to be in the Pocket PC group. The guy is real.
Yes, he got a Segway, and yes he really likes it. Just like those people who create hundreds of pics/sites all about their cool Linux apps or articles on GPL violations, or whatever it is - his Segway is also partly a hobby and he spends his time sharing that info across the net.
Just like if you bought a nice Porshe that only a few people in the world own, you'd want to share that.
Just remember its their first few days online. I know that they've fixed several major issues within 24 hours of the service going live.
Now - if your complaints are still valid after a few weeks, then go for it.
My Mac starts up graphically. However, I can press "CMD-S" on startup and it boots up in text mode.
Of course, its just one more thing that Mac OS users have over PC users.
What the heck are you talking about? I use PHP on Windows and Mac OS. There is no command line interface to it. Its a scripting language.
I write my code in DreamWeaver and BBEdit, but I do the same for ASP. ASP.NET has a great visual IDE, but most of the time is spent in the code editor - writing ascii text.
So my experience with DW MX for PHP and VS.NET for ASP.NET is about the same.
OK, there are a couple out there that are nice. But most are just rehashes of Windows or Motif or some awful window manager.
Even when a Linux based GUI LOOKS nice, it acts and feels like crap. Why is it that only Apple has a GUI that not only looks good on a UNIX platform, but also ACTS and FEELS polished.
Developers have to get their app signed for that mobile phone network. Its supposedly to make sure no viruses get onto the phones. Wonder where we'll see that next...
There is most certainly a Morpheus like app and a Kazaa like app on the Mac. They may not be FROM those companies, but they do interoperate with their networks.
Its like saying the Mac has no database apps because Microsoft Access isn't on there (though Oracle, Sybase, FileMaker, 4D, RBase, MySQL, Postgres, all are).
He's not saying that OS X adds Aqua that makes it better...it has nothing to do with XWindows or Aqua.
What he's saying is that the GUI tools that come with OS X server ROCK. It doesn't matter what GUI it uses, just that the tool itself rocks.
Actually - to all the people who say that you should use Cocoa if you're new to OS X - thats not completely true.
I prefer Cocoa myself. But if I was to write an app I meant to be cross platform between OS X and Windows or Linux, then Carbon MAY make more sense since I may be able to reuse the C/C++ code there a lot easier.
Of course, you could write your backend in C/C++ and use Cocoa for just the front end. And that would work if you have an app that is in the design stage. But if you are porting apps already designed that intermix frontend with backend (like most apps do unfortunately), then Carbon makes more sense - its closer to Win32 programming as well.
Not only that, HFS+ does not make OS X. It is just a filesystem that OS X can use. UFS can be used as well.
I would really like to know WHY some people are so adamant about burning OS X on the UNIX front.
Wrong. CLASSIC goes through a compat layer which is probably what you mean.
Carbon and Cocoa are FULLY native on OS X. In fact, some Cocoa calls actually call Carbon API funcs.
Even Apple developers use Carbon (iTunes) and mix Carbon and Cocoa in the same app.
Hardly. I get royalties from an OEM on my product. Its $x per product, no matter if they give it away for free or sell it.

This is where socialistic views become real problematic. Its happening in the US too.

Then I hope you get one soon:

Easy - copyrights didn't work last time. So Patents should.

Why is this modded to 0? Its a valid comment and reply.
Apple has ALWAYS charged for major upgrades. 8, 8.5, 9 were all full price upgrades. In the 10.x world, each point release == major release.

100% agreed. I always found it funny that the government found it necessary to outlaw things that only affected law-abiding citizens.

Though I prefer Cocoa, Carbon is just as native as Cocoa is.

Carbon is a good API to begin with. You can use C++ or C and access all the nice GUI of OS X.
.NET == Cocoa
Cocoa just makes things a lot easier.
I like to think of it this way (though technically its wrong, its a nice way to think of it): Win32 == Carbon;
