I had a horrible experience with dealing with Network Solutions for getting some registration stuff fixed about two years ago. I didn't register the place domain to begin with, but the company I was with was trying to get me to fix it, and it was terrrible. I think they were from india as well. They had the accent, as well as had huge problems with verifying my passwords. P-A-S-S-W-O-R-D. You said BassBoard right...?
I don't understand it. How can a company say that you must sell their software. If I am running an OEM, why should I jump through hoops have to find a 'loophole'? I am just going to sell my hardware, and that's it.
So why did Dell have to find a loophole? Did they sign something with MSFT at some point agreeing to only sell MSFT products? Or if you buy one MSFT product as an OEM can you only buy MSFT products? It doesn't make sense. Think how absurd it would be if nVidia said to all OEMs that have nVidia cards, that they could only sell nVidia? Absurd, just absurb.
Hmm, good point. But seriously, if she didn't tell anyone that it was a CZ, and just said "Look at this huge rock"... But better, read my other post farther down... I think it's a better marrige idea..
That's true. The NES really had alot of different input devices (some absurd, some cool). Alot of them were made with the disabled in mind (guess they don't play games these days...) Things I remember: Something you could blow into to make the NES work (for disabled people) Exercise Bike mod (or was it a whole bike?) Running Pad (PowerPad?)
Thing that you put your hands and and moved them around in mid air Arcade style controllers Shoulder mount gun thing (made by Nintendo)
There were all sorts of cool things, but alas, we are too 'safe' now in making of devices for gaming systems.
There isn't anything to circumvent (although I am sure that Nintendo would try to make some issue), so there isn't anything to violate either. And it doesn't lead towards anything 'evil' in their minds (DVD copying, Nonregioned DVDs, PS hacking, etc...)
I wonder if there is anyway to mod the Powerglove even more to make it wireless? (I am thinking of performance live) Just hack open a wireless Nintendo controller? And use the insides of it? Use batteries to power the glove?
Electronics on the compenent level isn't my type of thing, but I feel that it's possible. Is it?
Wow, some interesting things could be pulled off with a few synthezers, a Thermin and a Powerglove. I wonder if the Thermin and Powerglove would react badly together. This could be cool for playing guitar as well. Trigger odd sounds, or patch changes with your pinky...
Best of all, think of the applications for singers. No longer is them moving their hands around in the air pointless and retarded looking, but it could actually affect thing such as lighting and tempo even (of MIDI tracks)... I can't wait to get a powerglove on Ebay now... but there will probably be a rush of powerglove bids now too
Ok, this may sound a bit odd (some would say queer, but...) I think a Marrige Quilt would be a great idea, if you know which end of a needle is the business end...
It would take alot of time, and thinking, and wouldn't be a 'money' thing, and it's something she can give her daughter some day. Just make a quilt that has scenes that you needlepointed onto some of the squares about the years (hopefully years...) that you have spent together, leaving some blank, and one that's already titled "wedding".
It wouldn't be a terrible idea to get a small ring (I would just go with a Platitum one with a CZ or Saphire, but that's just me) and put in a small pocket for her to find, because her girlfriends will hate you if you don't get a ring at all (plus on the right finger it fends off other guys).
If you did the whole thing in secret (perhaps getting her mother or grandmother to help you; she would think it's sweet esp if it was her grandmother). You could even depicte it as a tree, with each of you as the root separate (with scenes of each of your earlier lives), and then together for a tree, and your relationship spreading out together...
Best of all, if you left the back side of it usable, then you could start a family tree (if you are going to have kids), that has her parents (she will love that), and you two at the bottom, and starts spreading out in squares with room for names, and other needle points.
Now this being said, I think that you would have to really learn a few things to do this, however- her, her mother, her aunts, and grandmothers would love you for this. And she would really like it that you learned something for her, instead of just plunking down 2 months pay (which to get you act like you work all day, when really reading./ so basically you are giving her your time./ing).
Good luck (I might try this one my girlfriend in some way, better start now... ) But really, if you are serious, this also gives you time to think over it, to make sure that you want it to be her, you can charge a Diamond in a minute at the store, but you can't make this instant.
Code her a 20 minute long Marrige Demo (64K is the best of course), that proposes to her. Have wedding music (after a smooth rendition of your 'song') in the background, with awesome 3d graphics. Perhaps not all girls would appreciate that, but if you did it from scratch, then it would be a nice effort.
That being said, I don't know how my girlfriend would take that... probably ask if I got the lame idea from Taco or something...
You know it's kinda hard to tell a really really good CZ from a diamond, unless you are a jeweler and put it under a microscope. I think some CZ's respond to ultraviolet light, but only slightly so that people can tell the difference. But will she really know?...
While I have more advice, my best is- ask for numbers.
The school I was at last year had an awesome ratio (66% women, 33% men). The first few months, you could ask for anyone's phone number, or where they lived, and they would gladly give it to you. Just sit down with random people, or go up and say 'Hi my name is FOO, what's yours?'.
It sounds unlikely, but even if the ratios aren't in your favor, you can most likely meet a TON of people really quick. I remember during orientation getting about 5 numbers of people, and thinking, wow look at all the people here, and then realized that there were 9 other freshmen orientation sessions!!! And there were upperclassmen and grad students too! There are so many people at even a small place, so take advantage of it.
One other bit of advice is learn an instrument (guitar of drums works well), and play it outside around people. People like it, and people will like you, not because they think that guitar is 'cool' but because for some reason it makes you more approachable, and allready they have a reason to come talk to you. People are scared of people often, it removes that fear. Fly a Kite, people like that, and alot of people will talk to you as well. It's almost Zenlike to fly a kite for hours outside while meeting people or thinking. It's cheap too.
Everyone here knows how to help others with their computers. Do so, but don't get trampled on. Learn to say no, or point them in the right direction. Because otherwise everyone will be banging down your door to fix their computer. Promote good computer usage. Teach people how to remove 'spyware', check for viruses, remove programs from startup, format their systems even so they can do it themselves. Teach people to defrag and they think you are god. Run an FTP server around campus, but only for those in your college's subnet (ipSec? or firewall rules?) People like that too, but it's not sharing out to the world.
Teach others, and let them teach you. Don't think that you are better than others, and can't learn anything, and don't think that you don't have something to offer. You do. College isn't just for learning from teachers, learn from each other.
Dress well. Wearing a tie even isn't out of line. It makes people respect you, and everyone will treat you more seriously. Look at the grad students, the teachers like them more right? Class is a professional place, treat it that way. It will get you far.
Oh, and watch out for Everquest, Nethack, slashdot, etc... they will hurt your GPA badly. Do things you don't like. Go out for Sushi, so see a 'girl movie' (with some chicks), go to a Bible study (esp if you aren't religious, just don't be mean to people there), read about other religions, write, write, write, learn yoga, exercise, cut your hair different than you had it in High school, talk to gays and lesbians (my roommate was gay, but awesome person, and my school was very 'colorful') they are cool people, and unlike HS people won't think you are gay too. Go to plays, support your school, plan meetings, join clubs, start a gaming group at school. HAVE FUN!!!

Offtopic yes, but isn't it odd, what with the 'normal' banners that appeal to most of us that are on./ that I just saw one for Microsoft Visual Studio.NET? Kinda odd with all the MSFT and.NET bashing here...

Agreed, but... You also get the benefit (especially in the case of a magazine) of the ads offsetting the cost to you. You don't pay as much but you have to put up with a couple of ads.
Odd, Rolling Stone used to be cheaper, have more articles, less ads, and I didn't have to flip through 30 pages to see the table of contents, in fact it wasn't even 30 pages long when it started...
And for movies, I would be scared to know what a ticket would cost now, if we didn't have the ads at the begininning. It's kinda odd, the tickets used to be cheaper, the digital effect prices have supposibly gone down, plots and jokes used to be better, and there weren't ads (except movie previews). Somewhere in there, it seems like with the 'cheaper' digital effects because computers 'save money and time' and the ads, that I wouldn't have to pay 8 dollars for a movie. I wonder what it would cost without the ads... scarry...
Yea, 3-4x the distance is really a huge difference. 100 meters is crap, but 300 meters is doable. In addition, if a wireless isp created a semi directional antenta (4 of them, each covering 90 degrees), and was able to boost the signal on each of them, the we would be able to get probably about 600 meters or better out of it.

The only problem is then, with more and more dynamic and interactive content, you don't want this to leak over to other legit marketing and advertising (even if some of it does piss you off). For example, I pay my 8 USD to go see a movie, and then I see Army or Shampoo advertizements before the flick, or Steven Speilburg puts Pepsi ads in his movies. This is advertising, but it is almost the same as Spam. Here's why a) I payed to see something, making my time in the theatre into money. They are taking my 1) time, and 2) money. It could also be argued that they are taking up my 'storage space' or memory in my head (hey its one arguement against spam on your computer, harddrive usage). b) I didn't ask for it, nor did I 'sign up' for it. c) It may be offensive to me. I may be a pacifist, and hate the army. This isn't quite the same as a child being exposed to porn, but what if I don't want my child exposed to violence, but the Scooby Doo movie has an Army ad at the begining?
Yea, it's a little extreeme, but we want to look at the rights of the ad agencies as well. I want stricter penalties, but moreso, I want some penalties to be recognized first. I want to be able to call my local Spam/Police department, and report spamming, and they take me seriously- investigate, and file criminal charges, or at least give me the room to file a civil suit.
