We had a case of a genuine bug (a zero byte GIF file on FrontPage 98 uploaded to the server would cause one or both to crash) and the run-around we got from MS caused several weeks of frustration.
Eventually it was solved, by MS, but they sure dragged their feet on it.
Several insightful posts here, many claiming a "dictionary type" of attack. I have yet to see the program the spammers use for this type of attack. I'm certainly not saying it doesn't exist, I just haven't seen one.
But consider...if your email address name is 26 characters long (the maximum allowed by hotmail IIRC) the brute-force attack to get the proper e.mail address must take a *huge* amount of time, would that be worth it for one address??
I created a hotmail account as a test purpose. I picked as odd a combination of names and letters I could, to the maximum allowed. I never used the account, nor told anyone about it.
One month later the box was *filled* with spam. My guess is that MS itself sold the account to spammers.
So let's see them go after themselves and fine themselves heavily. Or better yet, put themselves out of business.
Okay, so it wasn't programming, but network recovery...
I was doing a disaster recovery on a peer to peer network once (everyone had access and full rights to everyone else...you do the math) and rather involved with recovering many important files, I neglected to notice the office secretary (who happened to be married at the time) get extremely "interested" in what I was doing.
I noticed what the hell was going on when she started giving me head while I was restoring these files.
Anyway, it was fun to see this portrayed in the movies at "Swordfish"...I was the only one laughing out loud at that scene...
In any case, the job sucked, that was bad. The secretary sucked, but that was good. "Swordfish" just plain sucked. The TVR was completely fouled up. TVRs are NOT metal, I know, I own one.
I never read the Dune story. Doesn't interest me. I *did*, however see the Davis Lynch movie. It was fine. Some of the special effects blew, but that was to be expected. Last year I see the Dune mini-series.
Or tried to. Paul came off as a whiney spoiled brat and the costumes were *clearly* stolen from Liberace's closet.
My friend and I got about one hour into it before we'd had enough and put on something worthwhile.
No, this is not flamebait ot trolling, I'm stating a viewpoint. My viewpoint is the mini-series and I', sure the sequels aren't worth the time from a casual fan POV.
Supposedly, but I can't find it. Doesn't mean it's not there but the real issue is finding enough people who feel the same way, and especially in the armed forces (which you'd need to fix this mess)
I tried, and was successful in writing a web page that looked identical in every browser I could get my hands on (Net+ and Opera 3.62 for BeOS, Netscape for all platforms, the older apple browser, SGI and Sun browsers etc.)
It took some time, but in the end I felt it was worth it.
Of course, the really sad part about this is since I'm not a HTML guru by any stretch of the imagination, I used FrontPage. Naturally, I had to do some editing (mostly in Notepad since FP kept trying to undo my changes) but it was possible. The website however, was kept as simple as possible so all the aforementioned browsers would see it identically.
FWIW it was www.ratliberationfront.org (don't bother checking, it's gone now) a satire site that a whopping 300 people saw, but with tons of oddball browsers and no one (that I know of) complained.
But it *does* make it a money-making idea, of which I can do (as well as audio restoration)
But that's besides the point. The old line about "BeOS is dead because is has no users and no apps" is about as valid as "Linux will never make it to the mainstream"
Most of my cars were from 1976, a Lancia Scorpion, an Alfa GTV (Alfetta), a TVR 2500M.
They all had several things in common:
No pollution control
Big honkin' Webers
Freakin' loud exhausts
Fast as hell performance.
Best of all? Gizmos were nary to be found. I like it that way, if I want cantankerous, I'll boot up Windows (are you listening BMW???)
I wasn't going to respond, but then here's a chance to get it off my chest
Note to 12 year old self:
Along will come the most beautiful woman in the world. Don't *ever* let her go. *Ever*
Is how friendly the hardware is to alternative OSes?
It's got (a kind of) Linux on it, how well would BeOS, or OS/2 or some other *nix distro install on it?
Would the alt.OS drivers be easily available?
The last sublaptop I got was so damn windows only I couldn't even get BeOS or Mandrake to complete an install, much less find drivers for it.
I would find this good news simply for the alt.OS crowd.
And the ex-soviet empire is dying to sell their old diesel subs for almost nil.
I agree-

This was (sadly) not an isolated case.
If the film is at 11, would they show that horrible link that runs around here so often?
I shudder to think about it.
I can't stand pork. Therefore I must be a terrorist!
I swear, this country is tearing itself apart with self-induced paranoia.

Yes I know this is a worthy undertaking, but with all the crap that's broken/wrong in Windows, couldn't they come up with a better use of time?
Simple:
Upgrade your kernel!
Oh wait, that doesn't fix it? Drat!

I would love to have a Sun box, and each new offering from Sun looks better and better.
But they continue to shrink in marketshare, and the non-hardware related news items coming from Sun make them look, well, stupid.
Are the engineers and PHBs even talking to each other any more?
and you're an AC non-karma whore.
:)
So we're even
You'll notice I said "The following is meant to be humor, don't take it any other way".
.net is, do you?
If you don't understand that, go back and re-read it with a dictionary in your hand.
It's *humor*. I damn well know what

>>...this book aims to cut through the marketing hype....
But that's all I've ever seen on
it is done. It is too far gone to fix without going well outside the Constitution.....
Where else is there to move to? I'm done here.

NT4.0 Server.
Ditching the floppy is a dumb idea.
Sweeet! A fellow Son Of Sam fan! Their (one) album "Songs From The Earth" is an excellent ix of Misfits-style punk and Coldwave Metal.
You are not the only one, I never saw the point in playing it. Now mix Diablo and The Sims, then you might get me to play it.
When I told him about "The Sims":
"Great, a simulated life for people with no real life."
Kinda summed it all up right then and there.
But it *does* make it a money-making idea, of which I can do (as well as audio restoration)
