  1. uneducated consumers on Blu-ray Hits Key Milestone Faster than Standard-Def · · Score: 1

How many of those sales are from people walking into BestBuy, Circuit City, etc wanting to buy the Regular DVD and getting home with the BluRay version instead.

Someone should do a study on how many of those 100k were returned or exchanged for standard def version.

Given the average 'savviness' of the typical BestBuy/Circuit City customer, and the BestBuy/Circuit City employees' usual attempt at selling you the most expensive of everything, regardless of whether or not you have equipment to run it, I'd be willing to guess 40% of those sales are to people who SWEAR that the BluRay version of Casino Royale looks better on their Standard Def TV, than the regular DVD. :) /ancker

  6. Re:I understand the first postee. on Pinnacle, Online Grades, Skipping School and More · · Score: 1

The solution is to prove it with grades

But with grades/progress reports coming out only (at the most) every 9 weeks, how do you judge where and when to trust and not trust?

With 15 week semesters, do you have to wait until grades are out to earn the trust?
And when you get good grades the first semester, the next semester is a whole new set of classes and you're back to square 1.

Like I said, I see the need/possible good uses for a system like this, but I sympathize for the kids who are going to suffer from this. I never once blamed my experience on the 'system'. I simply said "I sympathize"

  7. I understand the first postee. on Pinnacle, Online Grades, Skipping School and More · · Score: 1

I often times skipped class in HS

I also often times didn't do my homework
But I'm in college now, doing very well in my Junior Year, and have landed a great job as a Network Admin for a branch of a rather large (global) company.
My old high school tried to implement a similar sort of thing, though it wasn't web based.
It was a homework hotline. You could call in, choose some options and find out what was assigned that day in whatever class.
The administration thought it would be great for students to call in and get what they missed.
    Great
But when parents started calling in and finding out what their kids had to do, it got outrageous.
Often times _my_ parents would call in and check to see if I had any homework to do.
The system can't tell them that "I" had some spare time in 6th period and got it done early.
Therefore, my parents didn't allow me to leave the house until I produced the homework.
Which I left at school(who wants to drag 7 big books back and forth to school everyday?)
And, OF COURSE, the "I already did it" excuse didn't cut it, for my parents.

My question is, when does simply checking how your kid is doing, turn into overkill?
Sure, I procrastinated a lot in HS, and had to haul ass to get some projects and papers done on time. Hell, there were some I just plain didn't do.
But in the end, I graduated in the top 10% of my class, was accepted to MANY top schools, and have a well paying job for a 20 year old.
(for those of you wondering how i'm only 20 and am a Junior....It's called tri-mesters, (3)15 week terms scrunched into a year. 2.6 years here = 4 years at a normal college)

Anyway, I understand where the parents come from, BUT I _HAVE_ to sympathize with the students on this one.

    MORAL:
You can force your kid to go to school, but you can't MAKE them learn.
Let them do it on their own, and they'll appreciate it 10-fold.

That was the LAST ad I expected to see under a thread that has "Linux....better than proprietary...(ie, MS)"

Slashdot has the Open Source 'slant', but pushes down Satan's (cough cough) Ads.

    Quick Link: Here

Horray for the Gov't, they "prevented" (i'd rather say 'postponed') the Leaves Worm.
All he has to do is send a little e-mail of what the "code word" to activate the "zombies" and all Hell breaks loose.

As an avid guitarist and technology nerd at the same time, I have to say this is BAD. The pure sound of an analog pickup on a guitar going through an all tube pre-amp and all tube amplifier is amazing. The realness and clearness of each and every microtone that you decide to play is flawless. No serious guitarist would use CAT5. I could see some applications for transcribing and controlling other pieces of hardware (but that is what MIDI is for) I do see how some features could be cool, but not for everyday playing. You'd have to bring your whole rig EVERYWHERE you go. Because most likely, your bassist isn't going to have a CAT5 enabled practice amp for you to use in his basement. Now what I want to see is 2.4GHz Guitar Wireless!

Have YOU actually seen it?? TCO Such Bull... Total Cost of Ownership. Lets see here. I've been running Linux on the server for about 2 years now. I've spent maybe $.35 for the CD-r. I've spent a few (total) hours downloading packages I needed. (pop3,apache2,samba,pine,..) I've maybe spent 7 hours configuring the box the way I want it.(including installation, installing eggdrops, configuring X) Thats 10 Hours and 35 cents. I'm currently running Windows 2k Pro on the desktop. $100. Office XP Pro. $300. Count all the software needed (Nero, Eudora, Flash MX, etc) $400. An hour installing. At least 2 hours for installing all the software. 2 Hours to get my ATI TV out to work. Countless hours tring to get my HollyWood+ DVD Decoder card to work (which never did). 30 minutes finding a driver for my Xerox laser printer that MS claims doesn't exist. 30 minutes for each Service Pack install. So thats 11 Hours and $800. Lets tally this up here. Linux Windows 10 Hours 11 Hours $0.35 ~$800.00 Granted this is only a single server. And Server vs Desktop. BUT I believe there is no difference. And in the corporate environment you can hire 2 or 3 MCSE Admins to run the show. OR you can hire about 5 part time College students and an Admin to Supervise and Manage. I will never believe that Windows will cost me less to run than Linux. Period. I rant too much. Ancker....
