  1. Re:45 cents/dollar ??? on No EZ Fix For The IRS · · Score: 1

I think they might have had a typo before. I could've sworn when I read this article, it said 45 cents to collect $1 of revenue... which seemed insane.

I think they silently corrected it...

It's not the dpi that matters. It's that finally it can do 1080i HDTV natively. You wouldn't wanna sit up close to any plasma. None have had very high res until now. Yes, I saw the 80" Samsung at CES. I also saw the 76" plasma at LG's booth at CES. They were claiming that their 76" was the largest... LOL. Oops!

  3. but what good is doing that? on Microsoft at the Tipover Point · · Score: 0

But what good is following in the footsteps of Apple, at least from a business point of view? Apple's PC marketshare is still pitiful and their revenues and profits are a fraction of Microsoft's. Their profits (when they have any) are a TINY fraction of their revenues compared to MS.

Yeah, as I stated in another post, a lot of his "facts" are BS. I won't argue w/his points, but yes, it's obvious to many that free is very attractive.

The author is misinformed on a bunch of things. He refers to MS's financials as being opaque and says that MSN is one of the money losing groups. I guess he never read the 10-Q filings because if he did, he'd find that MSN has finally turned a profit.

  5. lots of incorrect information on Microsoft at the Tipover Point · · Score: 1, Informative

While I won't argue w/many of the points in the article, there are a number of errors in it. It points to MSN as being one of the money losing groups and says that only two major products make money.

Well, MSN recently turned a profit. I guess he never read the SEC 10-Q filings at http://www.edgar-online.com/bin/edgardoc/finSys_ma in.asp?dcn=0001193125-03-080353&nad= or http://biz.yahoo.com/e/031113/msft10-q.html .

He also talks about "Then it came out with a 'student and teacher' version of Office..." Err, there have been educational discounts for a LONG time even when I was back in college back in 1992. It's not something new.

While MS's stock is pretty richly valued if you look at the P/E, it isn't terribly high compared to the rest of the S&P 500 or other tech companies.

On a funny note: Motorweek not long ago tested a new 04 Chevy Malibu. The funny thing was that there was so much body roll during the slalom that it tripped OnStar. The driver received a call from the OnStar operator in the MIDDLE of doing his slalom test! LOL!

Yeah, from a practical side, if all you want is NMEA output for random mapping software, a minimal handheld GPS receiver will do (usually about $100, haven't seen them for $50).

But yeah, this is kind of a neat hack to repurpose some hardware that's floating around in so many cars.

Keep in mind that they still have yet to make a profit. I'm all for this.

I completely believe that they are following their privacy policy. I have two Tivos and have no worries. In fact, I'm am opted IN so that they can monitor ME individually as to what I do on my Tivo (for their Lieberman Research thing awhile back), not just down to the zip code level.

This selling of data slightly decreases the chance that what I watch will NOT be cancelled.

Regarding having a 800 mhz machine or a 2.2 ghz machine, people shouldn't forget that Series 1 Tivos do it all with a 54 mhz PowerPC chip and only 16 megs of RAM (32 megs on DirecTivos). The Tivo CTO mentioned they get 11% steady state CPU utliization on that. Having dedicated MPEG encoder and decoder chips help. The perf of Tivo is more than adequate 90% of the time.

Series 2 Tivos have 32 megs of RAM and a 200 mhz MIPS proc.

Yup, your experiences hit the nail on the head. The original poster should really try rolling his own using half-baked crap and then try a Tivo.

Exactly! The poster should try using a Tivo for a week. I bet after that week, he'll be like, huh? Why the fuck would I waste all this time screwing w/a PC, a mishmash of hardware, and half baked apps when it all just works?

  11. Re:Let me Guess... on ReplayTV and TiVo Compared · · Score: 1

It does NOT take 30 seconds to change a channel. Yes, it does take longer than w/o the Tivo, but you'll never channel surf anymore.

You should have someone just loan you a Tivo and use it for a week. After a week, you'll say, "how the hell did I watch TV w/o this? I've been wasting my time screwing around w/my TV and VCR." You'll NEVER use your VCR again except to dump stuff to tape or to watch tapes.

I have two Tivos. I've got my 1st one over 2 years ago and I LOVE it. It TOTALLY changes the way you watch TV. You catch all sorts of stuff that you'd otherwise miss and you're no longer tied to TV schedules. Set a season pass for your favorite show (let's say it goes from 8-9 pm). Start watching at 8:20 and be done by ~9:00 pm.

  14. TV guide and VCR/video cap board != Tivo! on PVR For Linux · · Score: 1

    My god man!.

Obviously you've NEVER used a Tivo before. Tivo is an incredible combination of hw and sw. It TOTALLY changes the way you watch TV. You never worry about being interrupted while watching TV, you just pause it. You never worry about having a tape in the VCR, programming it ahead of time, making sure the tape is in the right spot, rewinding tape, etc. Just set a "season pass" for the show and it'll catch all the unique episodes of that show on that channel for you. Missed what they said while watching TV? Just hit instant replay to jump back 8 seconds, or go back even further in the buffer. Search for shows based on title, director, keyword, category or actor. You can even have it autorecord stuff for you if it meets those crtieria. For example, I like stuff about the 777, so I have an autorecord wish list for keyword=777, and when something comes on with that anywhere in the program guide info, it records it for. You really wanna waste you time searching constantly and then programming your VCR?

There's always something for you to watch in Tivo. You almost never sit in front of your TV and channel surf and find only crap. It's because of the recordings, season passes or wishlists you setup yourself or the suggestions it gives you based on your thumbs up/down ratings.

They accomplish this on 54 mhz PowerPC Linux box w/16 megs of RAM, a dedicated mpeg2 encoder, dedicated decoder and a custom chip that can handle multiple DMA channels (8 I think) at once and a 4400 rpm drive drive (no, not 5400 and not 7200 rpm).

Man, most people that are skeptical at first and say "I don't need that" or "yeah, I can do the same thing w/my VCR" and actually buy a Tivo, say, "Wow! How did I ever watch TV without this?"

For a good explanation of most of the benefits go to http://www.keegan.org/jeff/tivo/whatistivo.html.

This PVR isn't even CLOSE to a replacement. Tivo has sold 400K units and is WAY easier to setup and use than this PVR solution.

No, I don't work for Tivo and no I don't get paid a dime by them either (although I wish I did).
