Isn't it possible that it is more cost effiecient and time efficient to just reload a systme anyways. With how quickly you can blow a systme away and have it restored witht he proper restore media, many in the industry are now saying reload reload reload. Yes, you migh be an UBER nerd for being able to un-f-up a machine, but who is the hero, the one that gets it done the fastest, or the one who gets it done the hard way witht he same end result. This comment is ONLY in responce to the debate over reloading Vs. fixing.
All you really needed to do, instead of ask slashdot although an interesting topic, was search any of the big Manufacturers. It only took me 1 minute to find an answer...
http://www.hp.com/products1/servers/carrier_grade/ products/cx2600/index.html
Although it won't have your PCI-E slot, I ask, what do you need that for???? 16GB of RAM is an insane amount mainly used for rendering of large (motion picture length films) graphics, or things like termnial servers and DB servers. I think the person who submitted the question should have to answer those questions...
anywho.. I prefer the HP line of servers. The spare part numbers alone make them a lot easier to trouble shoot and get replacement parts!
...well, I forsee the next 7 years of mergers to about 1 or two telco giants. That should last about another 8 ro 12 years... anyone seeing the pattern yet?
Then, we will all realize how we have been getting screwed hard core and require the Government to do something about it.
Then, the government will require greater compition and impliment policy demanding the great one or two telcos to break up...
Then that will last for about another 12-16 years until deregulation starts to allow mergers... rinse, reuse, repeat. Amazing how we (humans) are creatures of habit....
BUT....
The one cog in the whole works will be the big social revolution and class warfare in about 15 years anyways, so who cares, start fortifying your basements......
very True. I am in the process of looking in the Twin Cities. The only way I will stay at BBY is if I can get some kind of promotion soon or a raise that would put me where I could go to school full time and work full time on ly at BBY. ( I need to finnish the 4 year degree)
Well, yeh, we have some not-so-smart people. Just like every industry. It just seems that some try to say they know something when they don't. The bad thing is, we have a ton of tools to look up specs and people don't always use them. In situations where the store is wall to wall with crabby people who all want your attention and have no problem interupting your mini lesson on what exactly the dif is between RAM and that GB number, we don't always have time to check, but atleast then, we should say I am not sure on that and I can check for you in a few minutes when I am done with this customer. Anywho, not all of us are idiots. Myself, I am a MCP, and I have a linux training and certifications, I got let go from a job after the slow season in consulting up here and I am working at BBY because it is actually fun to go to work, and the pay for me is decent. I am, however possibly looking for work in the twin cities, so if anyone is hiring, let me know!
Peace
Well, I think that they are going for about $100-$150. I haven't seen the price yet. Check out BBY.com. And no, this isn't a shamelss plug for the store, just a reference to where they can find the price. I know that 1GB USB drives are going for $60 - $109. Someitmes you can find tham for the $60 online, or about$70 when they go on snail mail rebate. Let me know if youhave troublke finding them. Also, there are these 2.5gb and 5gb coaster drives that are kinda cool and about $150 and $200 respectively.
... We haven't gotten any product konwledge yet. I will say that we won't be able to get it until day one here in the us. I personaly haven't touched a handheld device since my OLD SCHOOL original gameboy. But, this has promise, and with the recent release into the consumer channel of an affordable 1GB memory stick, I could actually see myself buying one. Gasp, I might actually own a portable gaming device. Hmmm.. one quesiont for the masses, would you prefer this device or a portable media center....???? feed back apreciated.
Well, this opens up all the phrases... The Bell toll, Bell Curve, etc. But seriously...
I think that this further proves that all in life is cyclical. Religion, including crusading, (the current gihad crap), Financial, just look at the stock market over time, ups and downs... consistantly, Technology, Client server, fat client, thin client, etc...
A person can make a lot of money and so on by playing on these cycles. If only I had that damn venture capital.
I guess personally, I would love the opportunity to go over and help out. I am wondering if there is an agency that is recruiting people or something along those lines. Any leads? I would just hope that there isn't a security risk similar to the one in Iraq for contractors. I think that this would be a great way for the "comunity" to show our human side. Dispel the Saturday Night Live, 'your companies it guy' stigma... any other thoughts?
I guess my question is... Is this a case of someone taking advantage of someone else's ignorance? Or could this actually be a legit service. One USEFUL idea is that a person could want a remote location for remote access from around the world to a Mac fromt end via remote desktop services. Someone there to reboot the thing if it crashes while you are in Singapore. I guess there are some good uses for this. Just a thought...
What do YOU think?
Isn't it more of a reflection on our society? I wouldn't say that it is the search engines fault. (Except misdirected links to squating serach engines for hit money)
I think that the average internet user can tell the diference. I also think that the average internet user in a hurry will bypass logical thinking and any anylitical skills in order to quickly find a result. I would like to see what affect the tab browsing capabilities of Firefox has had on searching the internet. Does the ability to quickly open a bunch of websites in background tabs increase the amount of sites recieving hits from misdirected search results...?
Ding Ding ding...
Nice Follow up. Or you can say...
"They Suck Big Floppy..."
(If you don't know the rest, watch the South Park Movie)
BTW I haven't seen ANY of the LOTR or Harry Potter movies.
Hmm, can we get this modded out of here? Sounds like this old jock is feeling a little bad about the fact the guys he picked on are now making 10x's as much as he is after graduation...
I agreee...
I think that if the kind people at WinAmp {macamp} had found a way to integrate and made it a free feature, it would be a worthy advance. Except for there fee based players, they are not all about the money. Also, I think that if Apple was to allow the Open Source comunity play with some of the iTunes code, alow some form of plug-in interface that allows for the public creation of plug-ins (may already be there and I might be unaware) you would see great things! Also, why not iTunes in Linux???
BTW, I didn't find out about this all until right now. I am in a hotel in WY. Well, I haven't been under a rock, just on top of 3 of tghe most beautiful mountain ranges in the US... Beartooth, Bitterroot, Big Horn.;-)
Yeh, and IE doesn't track anything, interesting that they went after Netscape, but they would never go after these cookie people, IE/M$, or any of those other pieces of crap that cause our computers to crash. Thanks DOJ for protecting our privacy!
Well, I see you didn't bother to follow the link before you opened you yapper. I might not spell well, but I do know the OSI model. You should also see the corresponding TCP/IP 4 layer model. You will see the parralels. The person who responded onle level below your post is correct. If you know SO MUCH MORE than everyone at Cisco, then why don't you show who you really are and STOP hiding behind anonymous coward. YOU need to check your facts. Good luck, I have a fealing you are going to need it!
The only thing I would worry about is the Fiber. There is a certain bank compnay in the area that ran fiber to the desktop "because that is what is going to be the future". Then in walked gig over copper. Voice, Digi cable, data, and more can all travel over copper. I doubt that anyone will be running Any kind of application that wil require over a Gig of transfer on one wire. I do aplaud the multiple runs of each bread. This will help prevent the "Sawzaw of death syndrome". I would further suggest routing the sets of cable on opposite sides of each appartment unit. Just remember, cable modems to Most houses are capped at 256-400Kbps. (yeh the pipe is bigger to the modem but remember that that is over our old friend Coax!) VoIP is suported over a 56kps connection (although you sound like you are on analog mode on a cell phone) and Cable, well, I doubt that in the lifetime of your project that that cable companies will abanden the miles and miles of upgraded coax that they installed for Digi-cable.
Good luck! You are definately on the right track!
Regards,
Brad
p.s. I can't spell and I stink at html - if you don't like it... to bad!;-)
Layer 3 switching is the application of Routing ideals and practices at the switch level. It is not a router. And as if that wasn't enough, guess what they are already out with... LAYER 4 SWITCHES. they allow blocking services at the port level... ie. DHCP, DNS (servers), ping...
Here is a link for you to chew on...
First of all, Wireless is VERY insecure, even when properly configured, and I am guessing the comunity doesn't want to hire a full time wireless security employee. So, I would suggest the LRE solution from Cisco. I am usually not very proprietary when it comes to solutions, but Cisco has the market share and the rep with this kind of aplications. For those who are scratching there heads, LRE or Long Reach Ethernet is 10baseT over borrowed cat3 pairs. Setting this up would tie all of the MAIN phone lines to each appartment to a box at central locations and those boxes are then connected using a standard Network Backbone. The user side would have an LRE translater (similar to a DSL line filter) that provides the with an RJ45 jack. I would suggest using a simple Linux DHCP server on the network. For the new instalations, Use Cat5e. The Cat5e will suport Gig over coper. This could be a possible selling point to potential buyers, especially if there are any tech related companies in the area. In the new units, run ALL phone, signal, and network wires as Cat5e, seperate runs for each terminating at a simple patch pannel. This will provide the greatest flexability for everyone and reduce the headaches that can be caused by messy splicing and aid in trouble shooting as well as provide greater flexability to the user. This is a HUGE project. I would suggest getting ahold of an integrater in the area or a good national one. I know of one company that would be perfect to help you. Let me know if you need help! bjjohnson@wi.rr.com Also, if anyone else is interested in dicussing this topic outside of/., send me an email.
Cheers and happy connecting!

I don't know what to say to that... It is hard to argue inteligently with some lacking any inteligence.
