  1. This happens a lot, but there is a workaround on Amtrak Photo Contestant Arrested By Amtrak Police · · Score: 1

If asked by someone to delete photo's then happily do so, spend time to show them and be utterly convincing that you are complying with them.

Now if you want to continue taking photo's be sure to switch the memory card for a new one first. Its important not to take any more photo's with the orignal memory card.

When you get home, use a card reader and some undelete software to get your images. Everybody (Relatively) happy.

  2. Ghost calls based on efficiency on Bugs on Fighting Back Against Ghost Calls · · Score: 1

Well 10 years ago It worked a bit like this: Phone dialling software will ring more numbers that it has customer service reps available at once, once customer picks up it will determine if there is a customer services rep to speak to the customer, if not, it will disconnect aka Ghost Call. So call centre with 50 people, will usually have 2-3 people just finished a call at any time. System rings ahead 10(or some defined amount) numbers to make sure that the call centre staff are not hanging around. The Cust Service Rep does not know who is dialled until the call is patched through to them, along with the customers details popped up on screen "Hello Mr , we are calling you about your outstanding balance of " etc.

The article reeks of Marketing squalk. Lots of hype and worlds longer than marmalade, lot of Wow and fizz, but not much substance. No wonder it's on MTV.

If there was something interesting to say about the product, don't you think they would have mentioned that instead of "behind-the-scenes video" and "jam packed with celebs"?

When a Mareketing Manager is "ecstatic about our alliance with MTV" instead of ecstatic about the product. I begin to doubt. Is it me or does this article give off vibes of overhyping to compensate for a poor product?

  4. Quantitive, not qualititive on Using gzip As A Spam Filter · · Score: 5, Interesting

Its not simply the words that are used in a mail, but the way they are used (the order) that gives a sentence its meaning.

    for example Two Emails:

1 (ham) "You have won a brand new Convertible, from the competition you entered."

    and

2 (spam) "A brand new convertible to be won, have you entered?"

Ham would match about 80% with spam.

Word matching is a blunt instrument as mentioned. The English language is far too complex for simple calculations, this fact should be taken into consideration, when applying a 'Spam Likelihood' rating to Emails.

Similarily, I dont think the PC Bangs (somebody change that name plEase) won't last long in the US.

CNN? USA Today? the LA Times?

I must admit after spending 18 months in LA. I HAD to use news.bbc.co.uk for news, and cnet.com and epinions.com for reviews of products/prices.

The alternatives were horrendous, CNN was just so sensationalist that it made ITN look serious. Ditto the majority of news services. Anyway for sheer convenience and control of what I am reading, the Internet has an easy win.

As for shopping, shop staff were generally useless (except at Fry's, bless 'em), newspaper advertising never gave enough details. Magazines only reviewed new products, not the end of line stock that is so attractively priced in the stores.

Finally, erm, having no friends over there didn't help either.

    1, (PC) Computer owners
    2, Home Users
3, The type of fool that downloads something willy nilly on their computer.

Given this conditions, the survey base could not really exceed 50% of the range of population. Therefore can really only be 50% accurate.

Dressing up shows your (sad) employers that you look appropriate for other roles (Team Leader, Management). And with the industry at its current state, I will gladly 'dress up' if it helps me land a job title where I dont have to redefine my skills every 2 years or face being replaced by a graduate.

  13. Ebay is based on a Fraud promoting culture on EBay Letting Fraud Slide? · · Score: 4, Insightful

But isnt every Ebay'er eventually doing it?

Fraud is part of Ebay's culture, just some people take it to extremes more than others.

Anyone who uses ebay for more than 3 months knows about sniping, then they sign up to auctionstealer or other sniping site to join the fun. Then they snipe on the newbies and give them a start on the bitterness ladder. Okay it's not Fraud but it starts people thinking of ways to 'beat the system'. Anger leads to hate, etc...

Others start selling becuase their co-workers are selling. Before you know it, they are shill-biding on each others auctions once they see someone biding passionately and wildly. Its common practice.

Then there are other sellers that take poetic license and describe goods using vague but attractive terminology, 'virtually new', or 'must be seen' to be believed. They know that some gullible people are afraid to leave negative feedback, because a evil seller will retort with the same. (Oh, the shame of having a minus on your record!)

Most people who use Ebay for long enough, learn the tricks of the trade. It polices itself, which implies Fraud must be committed before it can be reported.

You can only prevent fraud by controlling auctions tightly, then the whole 'neighbourhood policing' aspect of the software goes away, which is worth more to Ebay in goodwill than losing a few customers over fraud.
