I once was asked to take off my head phones that wasn't connected to anything. I agree the airline regulation is overly cautious. But it's a lot easier telling the passengers to turn off everything rather than telling them to turn off any device that emits a radio signal. I can also understand why a flight attendant might get pissed, because she probably already told a hundred other people the same thing already that day.
In my experiences, American Airlines is terrible compared to other non-US airlines. It would be nice if they invested more in edible food and better service. Not to mention, they will probably charge you for a movie (all US airlines seem to nickle and dime you). I don't see how this will be much of a benefit for the customer. I guess you'd have to bring your own iPad/Smart phone with you too. Good luck watching a whole movie on your phone before the battery runs out. On the other hand, Singapore Airlines has great service, decent food, and a personal entertainment system with a huge library of movies and shows which you can watch for free.
My main point is, whenever the name "China" comes up, people scream "Human rights abuse", "slavery", etc. Yes, they have a point. China needs to improve its attitude towards human rights. I would say the same to Burma, Russia, Pakistan, etc. But people single out China for such strong criticism, ignoring any progress they have made. I also wish people were so critical of their own government as well and its human rights abuses, like Guantanamo Bay.
Lawyers and bankers as leaders is great!... until they deregulate the banking industry to allow them to cripple the financial system, then bail them out so that the richest of the rich can still get multi-million dollar bonuses.
So how would YOU take a billion people out of poverty? The fact is, when there are a billion people waiting in line for a job, wages will be low. Institute minimum wages you say? Say goodbye to companies who will setup their factories elsewhere. Give everyone a social safety net? How, when you have nothing to give? Because of China's economic policies, people are taken out of poverty every day.
Compare this to the current US government: tax cuts for the richest, bailouts for the big banks (TARP and the Feds ~0% interest rates), subsidies for the oil companies. This comes all out of the pocket of its taxpayers, to further enrich the richest.
Are there really any benefits to the users to allow third party cookies? All browsers should just disallow third party cookies by default. There, solves that problem.
I love what Congress latches onto. Although this iPhone location file deal is a big deal, it seems to me that there are more important issues that should be discussed. Like maybe throwing the banksters who caused the financial crisis in jail. But at least it's more important than the hearings about steroids in baseball.
So I'm running Firefox with NoScript, Cookie Monster, Better Privacy, and Ad Block. What would this legislation add? I suppose they could be tracking my IP address, but since I'm on a DSL connection, it changes all the time. It seems to me the best way to not be tracked online would be to make improvements to browsers in such a way that cookie and LSO management is easy to use for the masses.
But people do need/want to know something and look it up. In general, people will know more and more. Kids will be kept honest through tests and exams.
Let me tell you, if you drive through any European city, you need GPS. A wrong turn can cost you 10 min easily. I don't see how GPS can degrade common sense. There have always been people who lack common sense, and there will continue to be.
I seriously doubt that this is where smart-phone technology is headed. However, this technology is pretty cool, and there will definitely be many applications of this technology. Maybe foldable/flexible e-books? Maybe Apple will find some novel use for this tech.

Wow, in Europe, prices are going down, while data rates are going up.
Until you're thrown in Guantanamo Bay without a lawyer and a trial. Good luck defending your constitutional rights.
Music piracy is a gateway to real piracy. I bet every Somalian pirate has pirated music or movies before he became a real pirate.
I'm not talking about Slashdot, but the general population, who seemed to have turned off their thinking caps.

Exactly.
Democracy is an illusion, when the two only parties have the same policies.
Because America exported all their manufacturing to China.

This was definitely not Mao's game plan. China transitioned from communism to capitalism after Mao's death because Mao's plans weren't working.

Here's a better idea. Stop buying RIAA music. Starve the beast, kill the beast.
I'm doing to use floppy disks from now on. There are no levies on them. That'll learn em.
Duh, a higher quality cable results in clearer digital signals, therefore clearer picture and sound.

I'm sure the author maps everything himself, grows his own food, builds his own car, gathers his own news, etc.

Ha, that threw me too. What a tangent...

No, they have just expanded the definition of terrorist to people who don't spend enough money on the MAFIAA products.
