Not only in console mode, but I can't help but think of uses in headless boxes i.e. servers. Thanks to this article, I might have just found a use for the 1 AGP and 7 spare PCI slots on my fileserver...now I just need to find 8 128MB video cards, and I'll have a 1GB VRAM! Combined with three 1GB DDR sticks, one can now finally max out the Pentium architecture's limitation of 4GB addressable RAM.

Next week: Using the new fangled chipped-and-removable 4MB CMOS ICs (as found in Gigabyte's dual BIOS) to trade files with your friends in lieu of floppy diskettes. Nevermind the price tag.

Have you checked Pricewatch? In my experience videocard prices fall faster than RAM, especially VRAM. Not to mention the fact that being on an PCI-X bus (64-bit 66MHz instead of the traditional 32-bit 33MHz) more than doubles your memory bandwidth compared to conventional SDR. Run some benchmarks, then we'll talk.

Heh, does anyone remember the virii that spread through the MS-DOS console VRAM? It was a pain at LAN parties where we would swap vidcards all the time. I can't recall the name, but it TSR'd in B800:0000 real mode. You can view the VRAM in Windows or DOS using debug:
    C:\>debug

This goes to show how virus authors's creativity evolves pretty fast, its funny how nowadays someone is showing how to use VRAM for legitimate purposes. Who would have known? Those crazy VXers thought of it first.

Not at the moment. However, CXBX is a work-in-progress. Some relevant portions from the page:
How hard is it to create an emulator for the XBox? Unlike the other major new next generation consoles I think the XBox will probably be the easiest to emulate. The architecture and operating system of the XBox so much resemble a Windows PC that it may be possible to simply convert XBox games to Windows. That is, replacing the system calls of XBox applications (the games) with substitutes when emulating it. This may seem hard and impossible to do (converting executables to work on other, but similar operating systems for similar architectures), but in fact it has already been done before: Project Odin allows Windows applications such as Quake 3 or Starcraft for example, to be run on IBM's OS/2 Warp.
CXBX replaces system calls in XBox boxes (a Microsoft term for application) with Win32 API system calls, allowing for direct execution of the box. However, some system calls still need to be replaced by hand. But of course, who needs to emulate an XBOX when you can emulate on an XBOX? (Thanks to Emulator Zone for this useful information I'm sure all readers will be interested in.)
    • MAME-X What do you mean, 70+ games for the XBox? Try over 3000! This is a port of MAME for the XBox which allows you to play tons of arcade classics on the XBox.

    • Stella The known atari 2600 emulator has come to the xbox!

    • GBA-X GBA on the Xbox...
    • X-Nes NES on the xbox.

I fully support Wayne's Proxy Censorship Avoidance Site, which is quoted as saying:
I am an advocate of free speech, full disclosure etc., of course. But that's not all. The Internet wizards are watching this censorship movement overall and think they have it under control. They have built in low-level protocols (in very clever ways) which ensure that censorship cannot work . But, in my opinion, they have forgotten that most people don't have their skills or knowledge. Sure, unless a country 'cuts the wire' there are ways to bypass the censorship. Sure, if there's an information flow into and out of a country, you can always get information you want, in spite of any attempt at censorship - and do it undetected. BUT it requires skills. Very few sites on the Internet tell you how to do it. This site attempts to redress this deficiency.
So, as long as China has Internet, the Chinese can circumvent censorship. Unfortunately, this creates sort of a chicken-and-egg problem, where Chinese are uneducated thanks to government censorship, and thus do not possess the required knowledge to bypass censor systems. I provide the following links for those interested:

To the Chinese Government: don't think you can get away with this. We are watching you. Remember the IIS fuck China worm? Remember when Americans penetrated Chinese censorship sites. One particularly activist group is the Cult of The Dead Cow, as they are involved with a US-Canada-Europe anti-China-human-rights-abuses hacking group, the Hong Kong Blondes.

Its only a matter of time until the Internet disappears in China, and the Chinese government succumbs under its own agenda.

cdex.n3.net has been updated with a message from Alber L Faber:
There is an application called NeoAudio, which is a straight CDex rip off. They changed some string (i.e. replace CDex with NeoAudio), changed the logo and added some nice SpyWare and Adware. I contacted Richard M. Stallman about this issue, but unfortunately I can not do much about it, except for the fact that they are removing/changing copyright strings which they should not. So please do not download and install NeoAudio (they probably make quite a few dollars by shipping the adware) and also advice other people NOT to download NeoAudio either, and warn innocent users not to download this application but download CDex instead.

In addition there is a small but worthwhile discussion over at Freedb. Some Slashdotters have missed the fact that Mr. Faber does not claim NeoAudio violates the license, he is merely suggesting potential users make informed decisions on whether to use CDex or NeoAudio. Logically, there is no reason to use NeoAudio -- it offers no improvements over CDex.

Of course, there's always Exact Audio Copy, which has proved itself in the mp3 scene as the de-facto standard for ripping.

Personally, I'd love to see a products--commercial or otherwise--which use GPL'd works in a productive manner. Gnucleus + CDex + Ogg + LAME + Freenet + OpenNap + VirtualDub...now that would be cool, if they where integrated correctly. Would definitely make one hell of a file sharing program.
