That's what you get for using Kazaa, or any peer-to-peer network for that matter. Learn how to use IRC, rip a couple unreleased/rare/bootleg CDs, join an MP3 ripping group, get an account on their HQ, and leech away high-quality rips.

You shouldn't complain about bad rips if you don't contribute back to the MP3 scene. Napster/Morpheus/Audiogalaxy/Kazaa/WinMX/Blubster/ whatevers_new_this_week is not the MP3 scene.

  2. Why not teach C#? on MS/Waterloo Curriculum Deal On Hold · · Score: 0, Troll
I admit I've never coded in C# and only dabbled in Java, but I see nothing wrong with Microsoft requiring Waterloo to teach C# in the core curriculum. C and C++ are quite dated, but C# was built from the ground up and does not suffer from the many subtle pitfalls that Objective C does.

Face it, Java was going to be the killer language until Sun prevented Microsoft from including the Sun VM in Windows. Without a Java VM, Java can go no where, but C#, being Microsoft-based, will no doubt be supported in near future versions of Windows to come. Its all about practicality: if students have to install a Java V, a C++/C/ObjC/Python compiler on their systems at home, knowledge of the language will be less effective.

Combined with Microsoft's powerful OS share, I believe C# will be the best choice for entrepreneurs in business, at least until Unix gains more usage in such fields. Either C#, or VBScript. One reason: integration.

That's not true, Napster is peer-to-peer, as in direct AIM, ICQ, video conferencing, and IRC DCC. Centralized peer-to-peer using a central server for indexing, but peer-to-peer nonetheless.

Decentralized networks avoid a central server by passing search query data around supernodes/ultrapeers, FastTrack being one such example. As is Gnutella; but Gnutella's a particularly bad example, as well as a bad P2P network protocol.

As for your comment about "blocked by firewalls", firewall ACLs are irrelevant. Firewalls can block a central server just as well as they can block incoming connections (removing one half of the visible P2P hosts), specific ports (1214, FastTrack), and specific data ("GNUTELLA OK\n\n" or "User-Agent: Gnutella\r\n").

Under no circumstances do this -- Netscape, like IE, consistantly hammers their sites and doesn't support active (or passive, I forgot) mode, which will get you banned from most sites. What you need is FlashFXP, it even supports site-to-site transfers that use other people's bandwidth so you can get 100Mbps FXP on a 56K line, for example. Highly recommended.

Funny how this is coming from someone who codes the very software used to illegally rip and copy audio streams. Hows it feel having piracy bite you in the back? Here we have a free software, Kazaa, written to make money off piracy via ads, stripped down to not display ads --the Lite denotation--repackaged and sold as a Deluxe version. Notice the irony here, eh?

There comes a time in every products lifetime when its time to start over, and I believe this is the time. In the 70s, we knew significantly less about good coding practices as today. GOTO was first becoming considered harmful. Procedural programming was on the rise. Object-oriented as a paradigm was beginning to take root.

With these considerations in mind, clearly simulating an old computer is a very backwards idea. bug-for-bug compatibility is not a positive effect.

Same as bug-compatible, with the additional implication that much tedious effort went into ensuring that each (known) bug was replicated.

When I plugged one in backwards I just went down to my local Radio Shack and picked up a new 74LS00, which they had plenty of in stock all the time.

Certainly the 7400 series as a whole is still widespread and used in hobbyists kits, I'm not that old. Maybe the original 7400 is becoming obsolete, being replaced with the 74LS (low-power Schottkey) or CMOS chips? If then it shouldn't be too difficult to replace the TTL logic with CMOS logic, given a few adjustment levels in voltage, or they could use the TTL-logic and CMOS-logic in one compatible chips.

Of course, the 5400 series SSIs (small-scale integrated circuits) are preferred over the 7400s for industrial purposes, and as a plus they are completely backwards compatible. Why isn't NASA using those?

Putting pico in front of a unit is simply easier than writing 0.000 000 000 00x (or twelve figures before the decimal point) before your number and putting micro in front of a unit is a short way of writing 0.000 00 (or 6 figures before the decimal point) before your number. So one micro has 1 000 000 or one million pico units in it. [ source]

So as you can see, MicroBSD, referenced in this article, takes 1,000,000 times more space than PicoBSD. Using compiled-assembly /bin utils, combined into one executable which checks $0, such as busybox--one is able to strip down the OS to fit on a 1.44Mbps floppy disc. I would suppose MicroBSD is aimed to fit on a 700MB CD-RW, with the ~600MB left over for user files thanks to the rewritability of RW media. As you can see, there is a large gap between Micro and PicoBSD, each fills their own niche.
