I'm using one right now to connect my TiVos and their computer to a BEFSR41 that's connected to my cable modem.
Both, along with another 41, are currently still running stock software, but I've put old 486-era type CPU fans in each, and that makes a world of difference in reliability/uptime/etc.
My first 54G, a v2.2, is set to one side at the moment, waiting for me to get around to replacing the stock software so I can use it in bridge mode with some of the TiVos to free up USB wi-fi adapters.
I have 2, one gray and one brown, that I got from Allied back about 1967, along with my first free-standing turntable, a Balfour. We're talking closeout on bargain line merchandise, not top of the line. No idea what became of the turntable, but I've still got those 2 cables, and they still work fine, and if you'd mentioned taking an RCA plug and plating it with gold back then you would have been roundly and soundly ridiculed.
If you mean the subwoofer would hum when one end of a signal cable was plugged into its input and the other end of the cable wasn't plugged into anything, thereby making it in effect an antenna capable of picking up the electromagnetic signal being broadcast by your house wiring, well, yeah, I could see that happening.
Just because it was silvery-colored is no guarantee that it was aluminum, and since aluminum oxide is an insulator, it almost certainly wasn't aluminum.
Nickel, maybe, with a little chromium, something like that.

The AC to whom I replied implied that all of the illegals were coming here to get on welfare because they're lazy, I was pointing out that a not-inconsiderable number were, by forces beyond their control, for which we bear some of the blame, forced to come here as a matter of survival to seek the kind of job where their illegal status will result in low pay and difficult conditions.
Yeah, how dare those Mexican corn farmers who were put out of business by NAFTA and the US agribusiness conglomerates come up here looking for stoop labor so that they can provide for their families?
Leaving aside Representative Weiner's non-Senator-ness, if Stewart lied about what he'd seen, or not seen, do you really think everybody else who was at the same college at the same time would go along with it, that not one of them would pop up to say "Stewart's nuts, everybody on campus knew Anthony was hung like a horse"?
