Does anyone else think it was the most unfortunate timing possible for THAT game? You know that one about being a 'terrorist' or 'anarchist' or anti-whatever with these types of communique experiences going on....
It seemed like the 'killer-app', of the century, for gaming at least.
Anyways, I'm giving up moderation for this post so be nice...;-p
I was under the impression that 4 had already been released... is this not so?
What gives? Personally I only use 3.x.x but that is because the scripts I use were developed for it and don't take advantage of 4 AND I'm not as comfortable with 4, what it brings to the table and what it may or may not break in my setup.
If you can afford to try out an ibook or anything running OS X there is a beautiful piece of software called Cocoa Gestures that enables Gestures as a 'Service' available to any Cocoa based application (most new OS X software).
This gives you not only browser gestures but OS wide, integrated gestures... it's only missing one thing at this point, setting up global gestures for standard operations (close window, open new window, save, etc).
I've seen a Windows app that does this but isn't very well integrated, it has a small selection of predefined operations instead of giveing you access to all of them.
Works really well for blog RSS outputs! As long as you just want the raw content this is a very nice way to browse blogs in OS X.
Thanks,
BTW is there source available? I keep finding nifty 3rd party Sherlock plugins but I'm always worried that I'll become dependent and one day it just won't be there anymore (happened to me with a 'weather' plugin once).
This is really cool biology. I look forward to hearing more stem cell success stories. Using your own bodies natural healing capabilities in a more focused and concentrated process... one word, elegant.
Now if those guys in florida will finish their testing on oral bacteria replacement therapy I will look to old age with much less anxiety.
I especially like the part where they say that because it's an open standard, we consumers will be allowed to CHOOSE who maintains our identity.
Not only that but we could even be given the choice of having an anonymous online identity which could only be 'tracked' to an account number with the only access given to an individual with the right password...
Now if you go about saying "Hey I'm #58274923793 at the Westfalia Inc. identity depot!" "Track me!" then you might have a problem.
Reality steps in of course and says that yes you will be tracked to a degree, but certainly no more than you are being tracked at the present and with no finer granularity than at present either. In fact if you're the average joe, why would anyone care to track you? Marketing?
I live in Irvine and I love the fact that we get all the limited release Animes... Vampire Hunter D, Cowboy BeeBop, Princess Ahime, the list goes on... but it's a city of like 250,000 people maybe twice that during the day (damn commuters) and NOT a major city. Over 50% of the residents drive a luxury car and pay more than twice what they should for their housing but still...
oh well, I'll just count my blessings. April 4rth will be a very entertaining day!
I keep wondering how 'sleazy' American businesses are somehow different from all the 'sleazy' non-American businesses out there. Is it because they get caught or because we have rules for them to break? You know there are some seriously sleazy businesses out there in the rest of the world... I think it's just our 15 minutes of fame.
This doesn't mean I don't think those people are pigs and deserve to be thrown in the poorhouse, just that Americans aren't the only sleaze-bags in the world.
Yep if you own it they can seize it. Otherwise it is simply a service they can wiretap but they have to stop your business or arrest you some other way.
For instance, who ever heard of the government 'seizing' your phone number? How about 'seizing' your address?
Well that's where you can make a comparison... is an internet address more like a land address or a phone number? If land then it's property, if just a phone number then it's not... or is it?
With the new legislation being proposed about phone numbers which stay with you regardless of your service, this becomes more interesting...
An important part of this is that it uses Javascript and the DOM as a scripting language. This opens up basic GUI wrapping of OS X API frameworks to a lot of individuals out there who would probably never try programming if they had to use PERL, C, or any other regular language for development.
So what comes out of this is that non-CS folks can easily put together 1-trick ponies that look amazing. This adds a completely new level of customization for those out there who want to create utilitarian applications for their desktop.
Sitting at Starbucks wireless, completely insecure connection on my Mac running OS X. Am I worried, no. Is it because there are few viruses written for OS X? no. Is it because there are plenty of viruses/exploits written for UNIX based OSes.... OS X being one of them, a valid reasoned to be worried but still I am not.
I'm not worried because I have a firwall that works out of the box to protect me from said viruses and expoits and is easy to turn on and configure.
XP also has a firwall available, but, it is hidden in an obscure location and has NO configuration I tried to turn the firewall on and every time I did this it would say that yes it was on, but then I would go back to verify this and NO it was not. Ten times I tried this... to no avail. What use is a firewall if it won't even stay on? Furthermore it has one option ON or OFF, what does that mean? What is it doing? Can I open a port or lock down soemthing it doesn't turn off... ??????
Yes there are shareware and even free firewalls available for XP but that means I have to find them and configure them and pray that they will play nice.
Macs are and always have been more secure than Windows machines.
Why do virus writers and hackers pick Windows? I'd say that it's because it is the easiest OS to exploit. The fact that it is the most prevalent is irrelevant.
There is something they could have done if they had perceived it would be dangerous to do a re-entry. They could have rendezvoused with the ISS and waited for another shuttle to pick them up. Being that this is the first such incident i imagine that this 'last recourse' strategy was not something at the top of their list. We shall see what sort of contingency plans arise, now that the unthinkable has occurred.
Some of the newer APs and cards use a completely f'ed up version of 802.11b which they claim gives you 22 MB throughput instead of 11 MB (the standard). These will NOT work with any standard-compliant 802.11b 11MB device, AP or Card. The 22MB devices just don't play nice and compliant devices will drop every other packet, thereby completely killing any signal you might actually be getting.
So if you already have compliant devices, stay away from non-standard devices.
Hope this helps someone who may have had a confusing experience because of this.
"then the least he could do is try putting themes into the OS"
Interesting that even with Linux distributions you have to download and install 'themes'...
I have a theme on my OS X 'top... MaggraX by reknowned theme designer... Takashi Izawa. It's very nice! Right now there isn't a warehouse full of themes available but there are some nice ones... and templates for making more. Several free tools and some shareware tools enable painless theme installation, etc.
So stop complaining and start Gimping your way to a new freakin' theme!
If you need a great machine that doesn't make a sound you don't want, get a Mac. The large dual processor desktop models may not be exactly what you're looking for but any of the portable line or the new iMacs are absolutely noiseless. My rev A PB TiBook only turns it's fan on if I have it sitting on fabric or something else that keeps the heat in. Sitting on a simple low writing desk it is 99% absolutely quiet. Even the hard drive is barely more than a whisper when reading large files.
Same is true of the iMac. No fan noise, no drive noise... just ambient music and screensavers when not in use for 'computing', perfect for the bedroom or any other small living space (ask any Tokyo native).
If you have one of these models and they are creating too much noise, you have a bad drive. IBM travelstars from 2 years ago had bad spindles... get a new fluid dynamic bearing model from IBM or Toshiba and you'll again have no noise. CD-ROM, etc could add some noise if old, or try a cleaning CD to get rid of any grit that may be causing problems.
I've been using demetallifizer to get rid of the metal look so I only see it in iTunes or other carbon apps, so widgets must only be new in cocoa apps with metal theme.
That Sony will change the name to JUST PS2 and in the next revision PS3, not PlayStation at all. They've put way too much into branding PS2 to let it all go, but they also can't give Nintendo all their earnings.
Hmmmm.... if I didn't have a girlfriend I'd be propositioning you. -)
Yes NZ is Commonwealth now but in 1890 - 1910 was it? Balloons can be machines, think about a car's airbag, or any number of devices which use 'air-bladders' for pneumatics. Balloons simply displace atmosphere with a lighter than atmosphere substance, but the method of displacement can be every bit as mechanical as a lever or a pulley is a mechanical method of displacing mass.
The Smithsonian is an American institution. Why wouldn't they consider an American first.
When will New Zealand announce their centennial of flight?(they have already AFAIK) When will Brazil announce? How about Italy or England? The Wright Bros are America's legacy. We announce it. Do other countries or people have to agree? no.
Americans announce their achievements, we're egomaniacs and we like attention, so be it. If other countries just sit on their collective asses and say nothing then America ends up with the loudest voice.
BTW this seems to apply to a lot of other issues as well. On the other hand I live in America so maybe I'm only hearing one side of the story.... that's why places like/. are great, you get to hear at least a few more sides.
And yes America is slow to recognize achievements that don't involve Americans... big surprise.

Needs more presets or an rss search engine or something... hmmm, where would you find something like that...
works fine though, as far as RSS feeds go that is.
I guess it's not interesting if by 'interesting' you mean provocative... if so you are correct.
I think it's very interesting to see good medicine being advanced.

For $40 you can get a nice little 32 MB USB keychain drive... who cares about floppy?
If this guy was a serious slashdotter he would know to write it out as:
;-p
.mac client for Windows....
"Mac Only == Gauranteed Failure"
I won't listen to the rest of his drivel
p.s. Who's to say it won't end up platform neutral... they did just make a

I seem to recall that JAVA has died a few times already so maybe it's not your best bet!!!!
