If Apple wants to position the Touch as a gaming platform, the low-end model needs to be price-competitive with the DS. IOW, $149 or thereabouts.
I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of price drop for the Holiday buying season. I doubt it will be that much though. Apple seems to be quite comfortable knowingly sacrificing some sales in order to maintain their "elite" brand status. This is probably why they haven't done a netbook yet. An Apple netbook would almost certainly land in the $600 area, and how well would a $600 Apple netbook compete against several equally sexy Windows7 devices at half the price (assuming they came out with one in the fall)? It would have to be different somehow to justify the price. Touchscreen? iPod Touch emulation mode ("MacBook Touch")? TV tuner? Something like that.
Does anyone have "favorite channels" anymore or just favorite SHOWS? I agree that some channels would die in an a-la-carte environment and I think they should. The most watched shows would get shifted to more financially sound channels. Keep in mind that most cable channels are owned by 4 or 5 conglomerates anyway. They would indeed consolidate their most profitable shows to one or two channels. If SciFi got axed, BSG (if it was still on) would get kicked to USA or Bravo or even NBC. I'm not worried.
1. File Sharing. My Touch shows up just like any other shared Mac in the Shared bar in Finder windows. Once I log in, I can drag files back and forth across the entire directory structure just like any NAS situation. This includes pulling out iTunes music, albeit with funky filenames. iTunes can still figure them out, though.
2. Ad Block. Either by the shareware Adblock or a hosts file.
3. Emulators. The GBA emulator has gotten quite good.
All I can say is that Win7 happily took the Windows 2000 driver for the 10 year old PCI SCSI card I have in the machine I'm testing it on. I was pretty impressed.
That's exactly why cable TV is so expensive. It's also why the most expensive channel is in the most budget-conscious cable tiers. ESPN... actually Disney, has a rigid all-or-nothing clause in their contracts that states that it has to be carried in the lowest tier. Disney will also withhold all their channels from a carrier who won't take ESPN.
So basically, whether you like sports or not, you can't buy cable or satellite TV in the US without ESPN.
I've ordered several DVD's from Amazon.co.uk to play in the US on my region-unlocked player. Never had a problem with them selling to me. Hell, sometimes the shipment has been faster than some of my Amazon US purchases.
I'm going to have to differ here somewhat. If the S-Video source is a D->A coming from a framebuffer like in a digital satellite receiver or game console, and the destination is an analog display (CRT), then the superiority of s-video over composite is quite apparent. The lack of dot-crawl alone is worth it!
However, if we're talking about tuning an OTA or analog (almost unheard of these days) satellite NTSC signal, then there is no difference, because the source is effectively composite already!
Also, it makes little difference if you're feeding a digital-sourced s-video or composite signal into a modern flat panel display that is just going to digitize it back into a framebuffer anyway. Chroma/luma separation is trivial for the DSP's used in these displays.
Bottom line: s-video IS better for digitally sourced material into CRT displays.
Well, there's this, but I think you'll need a few more coupons!
If it's raw stream data you're after, you probably want one of the USB dongle tuners. I think there's a KWorld one out there for around $50. IIRC, their satellite DVB tuner cards were popular with the hacking community.
Exactly. This was done in 1984. All you need to do is enter Number Of Players = 0 and you're done!
Actually, in 1985 I modified a Othello game that I typed in out of Compute! to play itself in order to learn the strategy to use to beat the game (Get the corners!). Can I claim prior art? 8^)
Word. They could raise the gas tax and the pump price could stay the same if the gas stations didn't have to have people to stick a nozzle in your car... even though you still have to get out and work the pay-at-the-pump stuff yourself if you're using a credit card. Stupid.
I know, I know... jobs. It always comes down to that. They could always split the difference and mandate at least one "full serve" island. In my experience, most stations only seem to staff one person for the whole place anyway.
Absolutely. Landfill mining is going to be big in the middle to latter half of the century. Keep in mind that with the exception of things that get burned up (like oil), none of this stuff has "disappeared" from the earth. It has simply been moved to another location. I've got to pick me up some Waste Management stock one of these years for my retirement.
In order to get BBC World in the US you have to either: 1. Have a C-band (big) dish and a FTA digital receiver.
(Currently. It's only non-scrambled by the grace of their hearts.) 2. Have a grey market Canadian satellite subscription. 3. Pirate the Canadian or Central American satellite services.
BBC World is apparently available for US carriers to offer, but as with most stuff from abroad with actual thought-stimulating content, US carriers "don't see a market" here for it. Shovel me some more Fox News Channel please, and turn up my morphene drip while you're at it. Ahhh. That's better.
Word on the FX5200. I picked up one with a TV out so I could play the odd game on my HTPC system. I never run it higher than 800x600 anyway, and what's the point in having refresh rates faster than the monitor can actually draw? I do most of my gaming on consoles, so 60fps is perfectly adequate for me.
DS9 had lots of those moments. My favorite was in "Siege of AR-538" or whatever it was called. I think it was Nog who said something like "Humans act all evolved, but take away their technology and comforts and they become scarier than any Klingon you'll ever meet."
Hey. I'm American and it bugs the shit out of me too. It amazes me how widespread it is.
Another one is "could of" instead of "could have", another example of saying what you've heard instead of saying what you mean. 2 seconds of thought will straighten you out.
3.5.1... really?! That's not Mozilla-style at all. It should be 3.5.0.0.0.0.0.2467!
Dissolves all shirts within blast radius.
The only outrageously overpriced Macs these days are the Mini and the Pro... and a case can be made for the Pro.
System Utilities should never cost more than $40.
Games should never cost more than $50.
Productivity apps can cost whatever, based on the size of their target market.

Damn. I read the headline and my first thought was that ESA was a game company and "Herschel and Planck" was a cleverly named video game!

Or they could sell Clippy plush toys. I'd buy that!

Is he the same Richard Boucher that was the State Department spokesman for so many years?

What was their last successful medium? The 3.5" floppy?
8mm Video Tape?
