You make good points... but I never lied about what I did for one thing. Most of the people I knew knew what I did. And how can you say that I haven't looked truly past my behavior? I will never pirate software again, period.... I am not addicted to it like it is a drug or alcohol... I am simply using what I know to better the state of free software. And don't I know that I hurt others?? Of course I do... or didn't you read my answers or some of my other posts today?
I AM him. I am not addicted to anything. Lets say X years ago when abortions were illegal... a doctor got in some trouble for performing them... Knowing he couldn't continue to perform these proceedures, he started proliferating birth control.... Is he a addict of birth-prevention?? No, he is an advocate of women's rights.
I am sure they would have different opinions than I had. They would probably say the same things as the leader of DoD would before he was cought by the federal government and had to face what he had been doing over the years. I am sure my answers would have been different a couple of years ago as well... but in life, experiences tend to change your views on things... especially experience that effect you you as profoundly as this effected and still effects me.
I have no agreement which limits my right of free speech. That being said, I was in no way *forced* to say any of the things I said. It is truly how I feel. Calling me a sell out for seeing and taking the high road is not warranted... I didn't sell out to anyone.
I would argue that leechers on IRC become distributors as well. You have to start somewhere... I mean, it isn't such a big jump from #m8leech to DrinkOrDie.
I see your point about it seeming to be another illegal system. I do, however, object that it is unnecessary.... How long did it take people to find a viable mirror of RH8 on Monday?? All day?? This release could have been available, w/o load, in 10 mins in countless places if there were an effective mirror system in place.
absolutely... I mean. Why would the people behind UL even THINK to do what they did? How many lawyers does it take to figure out that an NDA and GPL don't mix together (you can't even lump the acronyms together and descramble them into a word!!):) At least I can't.:)
First off, I think this is some frightening stuff here. The article quotes something along the lines of saying that this doesn't impede the home user, it is too prevent high-quality pirating of these works. This is ludicrous. What gives anyone the right to limit the quality at which I record stuff?? Why wouldn't I want to use Firewire if it brought me the best quality?? It is limiting and against my rights as a subscriber and consumer.
Secondly... I can't believe these things are in place already. I don't have Cablevision, I get ATT Digital Cable... but my service sucks. I don't even have digital capabilities coming out of the cable box. I have a crazy sound/video system, but I am stuck with composite video and stereo audio coming from an rca connection.... I get screwed like this and they have all this copyprotection up and running already? This is a damned injustice.
I would assume that you are incorrect here... Imagine the amount of people who would be willing to install a small ad engine to facilitate connecting to the internet from anywhere they wanted to in the given area... It must be millions of users who use AIM... and they don't seem to mind the ad at the top...
I would love to carry around Zelda in my wallet and pull it out whenever I want to play it... seems like a great idea to me... more companies should be doing stuff like this.
ehhh...
How you going to record the thing w/o the popups? Illegal or not, if the popups come up in the video stream, I don't see how d/ling the vcd will get rid of em.
I don't see how it is better for ANYONE except big business when gene sequences are patented. Aren't these things supposed to help the human race by fighting disease and such?? I see patenting this stuff as hindrance to EVERYONE except those who are going to make money. The only relevant point the law makers should be looking at is that the human race is better off not patenting living matter. Right?
It is funny. I am relating this to the USA... but I am sure the same can hold true for.au..
We win our freedom.
We come up with a system of government to protect our freedoms.
Time passes.
The government THE PEOPLE put in place to protect these freedoms is slowly but surely taking them away.
Is it 1984 yet??
This subject has been touched so many times, I hesitate to post... but it should be said that the article makes a nice point... There isn't a fool proof justifiable way to stop the distribution of unlicensed IP IN THE SHORT TERM. It has to be either accepted or taught in schools to children at an early age that these practices are not ok. The sad part of the article is that you know at least one law maker is reading it and thinking it is a good idea.:)
Interesting.... you wonder why they went out of business. An exec probably came down and said, "You guys would look a lot better with flat panel monitors."
I think this is great. Really... Big business could care less about their customers in recent years, but we have these guys generously keeping customsers online...even after they aren't being payed....
This is how customer service SHOULD be done. It is ashame that this is the EXCEPTION and not the true state of an industry in peril.
Senator F. Bar R-51st state announced the drafting of a new technology bill. It requires that all CPU chips conform to a regulated speed quantifier. This will allow all chips to be able to be easily compared with one another to end industry confusion. The unit, abbreviated IHz (Intel Hertz), was developed by the Intel Corporation. They have lobbied to get this standard, which will be controled and policed by a board of independent persons funded by Intel, adoped into Federal law....
Maybe I am being ignorant... but couldn't you just order the voice line then order the DSL line. Once you have DSL over that copper just cancel your dialtone....???
I actually had a similar experience with too few pairs in my apt. building. The DSL provider wouldn't (or couldn't) get the pairs run so I ordered 4 extra voice lines so the phone company was forced to run the copper. I then cancelled the lines and was happily using DSL...
i think it would be nice if i could be given a nice p4 implant and the bsa's auditing software installed on a small hard drive placed somewhere inconspicuous...with all necessary eula's in my wallet of course.
Then I would like to get a usb (2.0!!) adapter grafted onto my finger. This would make me the perfect superhero poster-boy of the bsa. I could visit all of the offending companies, stick my finger where it didn't belong (in their usb slots of course) and audit them into submission...
This is the behavior of a hero is it not??
Hrmmm.. Wouldn't the source code of the patch be a valid explanation that would violate DMCA rules? Can we be liable for compiling it? Ouch.

My lawyer had no part it writing this...

That is a stretch... Why would you *NOT* do something that you have been doing for years and are good at to help free sw gain marketshare?

What is the best way to NOT gain ground and support in the open source community??
How bout violating the GPL. Duh.

haha, this sounds like a few troubled musicians' excuse to smack around a helpless teddy bear and call it music!! :)

And... each voice line was $26/mo...
