    This is an analog video signal transmitted on the same frequency as 802.11b, but that's the only relation. WEP doesn't apply. Anyone can sniff.

    GoDaddy.com offers a registration-by-proxy service of some sort, where they'll forward legal correspondence to your home address and only list their info in whois. Costs an extra $10/year or so, I believe.

    There was a product which did just this a few years back, unfortunately the name of it does not come to mind. If your connection was not maxed out, it would start to retrieve the HTML of the links it thought you might follow (looked for patterns, such as the 'Next' button on the bottom of all of today's articles, argh!).

    You might even be able to extend this, have the browser pre-render the pages (assuming there is enough time), which would cause pages to appear instantly.

    This is all assuming you're not paying per MB.

    This reply shows a lack of research.... it has been possible to enter your DNS servers during registration for some time. If you don't do this, why are you complaining that the propogate some other IP?

    On a side note, aren't you required to have *some* DNS server listed? If you don't enter one, then is Register.com required to provide one for you temporarily? If they are, why shouldn't they put up ads to mitigate the cost of the traffic?

    The above may be more insightful than funny. If the computer grades based on a known algorithm, how difficult would it be to write something which modifies an existing paper to increase the score? Yes, someone could do this by manually running it through the scorer multiple times and incrementally updating it, but how many people would pay $5 to feed their paper through a web app and have a lazy professor give a better grade with no additional work?

    This is a common misconception. Being insane and being drunk are not considered the same. There was a court case several years back where a guy agreed to sell his house at a bar for a very low price, went to court on your argument, and the agreement was upheld.

    This would be the perfect job for students during the summer. For $5 a pop, they can accept all license agreements during installs of software, etc. License is unenforceable.

    I'd love to see something like this go to court...just to show the sad state things are in.

    How long is it until a P2P client is created which appends a half second of noise to the end of everything you download, thus modifying the checksum?

    I can see it now... "And in recent news, according to the RIAA there are over 10 billion songs being traded. The organization is quoted as saying 'We intend to sue individual users for having more songs than we've created...'"

    There's a difference between the biological and electronic systems. Biological threats are always external and can randomly mutate. If we don't have a good immune defense, a small random mutation or exposure could kill us.

    However, what if there were *no* viruses or bacteria (forget the fact that this is biologically impossible...), in this case, what use would the immune system be? If we eliminate electronic viruses, what will our systems have to be strengthened against?

    Yes, the locksmith will make you a new key, for a small processing fee.

    Most companies will issue a new serial for a small processing fee as well, if you contact them, explain the situation, and validate your information.

    By your logic, there's nothing wrong with having anti-theft circumvention devices around for use by the public in case you loose your keys.

    How are the two different?

    If it only "phones home" when it detects a cracked copy of itself, then no, legal users are not being spied upon.

    Wouldn't have "crashed" it anyways, as none of the control systems were affected. Just the conditions monitoring network, and they still had an analog backup. Not as efficient, but gets the job done.

    Makes you wonder how soon they're going to remove the analog systems in the name of 'efficiency'.

    If I remember correctly, the worm came in through a VPN, which had been established with a technical contractor. Their net was exposed and became infected. Makes you wonder who else might have ties to the internet that the admins aren't fully aware of....

    It's not enough for the GPS receiver (which requires very little power) to be turned on. The phone has to transmit your location on a regular basis. That's for the phones that have built in GPS, as the majority triangulate the signal based on strength, timing, or approach angle. In these cases, the phones have to be actively transmitting. I doubt they'll be doing this when turned off, as it would kill battery life and would be very noticible to the consumer.

    When I said 'hacked', was referring more to the software than the hardware. As more and more phones become remotely upgradable, something like this is all that is needed to cause people to play around with the software.

    What happens when this is larger? Someone has to manage the keys to the sites (for updating the registry of trust levels) so that not just any site can update a user's rating. Who decides what is an appropriate site? Why can't I create my own site and boost my level so my comments show up on other sites with similar content?

    I have visions of a FSF rep in court with 10k licenses in big boxes, MSFT lawyers everywhere.....
