It was only slightly early. Nintendo must have known that it would be in Game Informer magazine, just the scans of the magazine were released a few days earlier than expected (The scans were released Friday). Someone on another forum claimed they had it on good authority that all 3rd party NDAs expire on April 20th. If that's true, we can expect a lot more info soon.

Actually, that type of scaling looks beautiful on ZSNES on a regular CRT or LCD screen. (I say that type because while ZSNES supports scale2x, it supports some similiar algos that I find look better.) The scaling makes some assumptions that make it only look good with 2D video game graphics or similiarly simple graphics (like diagrams). Enlarging a photo with scale2x would just look awful. The problem is more that on a regular television, NES and SNES games do not really look pixelated, so the positives of this type of scaling are questionable.

Yeah, I think the idea is to make the games cheap enough to be impulse buys. After all, the virtual console games are almost pure profit for Nintendo (they have to pay for bandwidth). There have also been comments by Nintendo that they would also allow some new (low budget, small) games to be downloaded, although the specifics on that have not been made clear. A downloaded GC game would be huge. Even downloading onto a SD card that would pretty much fill an SD card. Also, that would take a while/be a lot of bandwidth -- at least by today's standards. Maybe in a few years when SD cards are bigger and internet connections are faster they will consider it.

You can run NES and SNES emulators with little difficulty on an original XBox if you hack it.
