  1. Be careful that you're not standing in a glass house before throwing stones at Microsoft. Ubuntu has a history of installing third-party crap into their default installations as well. Apple doesn't, but MAN they really make it hard not to pay for an upgraded iCloud account if you're using one of their devices.

As a member of the Republican administration, shouldn't Ajit Pai be happy that California is executing it's State's Rights to enact their own state specific legislation?

I mean... State's Rights is still part of the Republican platform, right? Or, has that been replaced by "whatever the highest Corporate bidder wants"?

  5. I think that the real question to ask is why... I'd imagine that companies that sell meal delivery kits like Blue Apron and Plated would like to take credit for some of it, as would home grocery delivery services like Peapod and Instacart. A lot of VC tech money went into those companies.

If you think that's bad, try having a first name last initial @gmail.com address, like donalds@gmail.com. (Sorry Donald, but I'm sure that your inbox is already as fucked as mine is) You'll basically get a dozen misdirected emails a day from people all over the world with your same first name and same last initial.

I swear that I must have at least one logon for every online dating and file sharing service in the universe by now thanks to people fat fingering their email address and using mine by mistake. I've also had to unsubscribe from hundreds of marketing email lists from businesses as well for the same reason.

The bad news is that my e-mail address shows up on the "Have I been pwned" e-mail alerts list about 25 times... the good news is that the passwords that they have on file for me aren't passwords that I've ever actually used :)

  7. That's the big problem with cryptocurrency right now. In order for it to be used as a replacement for cash, it's value needs to become stable and it's transactions need to regulated for fraud protection.

That said, nobody wants to invest in a cryptocurrency that doesn't increase in value and is regulated to the point where any limited gains that you do get from it are taxed by the IRS.

Of course, Google Cloud does the same thing, and their cloud hosting services are about 5 years ahead of them technology wise.

I'm thinking more ambitious... like creating something like Republimail to replace the "obviously liberal biased" GMail and something like ConserviDocs to replace Google Docs. It can have prebuilt templates for sending hate mail to your Democratic congressmen!

You know that there are people out there in red states would pay money for this stuff... why not cash in on it?

Someone should really build a "conservative alternative" to Google, which only has nice things to say about him and his Republican buddies. It seems that there is now a market for such a site.

Maybe they can call it "Redsearch.com" or something like that... although that URL might be a bit too close to some other web sites that conservatives wouldn't approve of :)

  12. I don't really think it fostered better GPU's, but it certainly drove up the prices for the existing supply of them. We got to the point where they were basically sold out everywhere, and miners were paying $500 for $250 video cards on eBay earlier this year.

I guess that's good for AMD and Nvidia shareholders, as they had no trouble selling every video card they made in 2017 and early 2018. Selling the picks and shovels is always a profitable business to be in during a gold rush.

I was going to ask when 4K signals will be available OTA, but I think that the answer will likely be "never".

The broadcasters will probably keep those behind a paywall that requires you to have 50 Mbps or better broadband to access. So, if you don't have cable internet, a fiber connection, or are planning on getting a 5G wireless connection when they become more available... you're stuck with 1080i or 720p.
