Definetely. Even after getting the thumbs up from Spielberg these folks should be concerned. They could still be sued by those monied interests.
A lot of people don't get that derivitive works contribute to the original work. Just look at open-source software if you want good examples of this effect. How else was an Indiana Jones movie going to make it onto the front page of Slashdot today? I can't think of too many that do not include a derivitive work.
This is a prime example of a copy of a previous work as a beautiful thing. Immitation really is the greatest form of flattery. It is terrible that works like this are normally supressed by copyright laws that don't serve the populance. The point of laws is to serve the populance. Clearly supression of creative expression serves no one. It is encouraging to see that Spielberg gave them a thumbs up on this project, but I don't doubt he would sue the pants off of them it he thought their project would harm his extensive bank roll. And who can really blame him if he did, he would just be taking advantage of the ludicrous law of the land. Who knows how many other cool projects like this have/will never seen/see the light of day as a result of corporate america's tight grip on the world.
I very rarely use Apple products for reasons I don't feel like debating right, now but I think this guy does deserve an award. Apple compensates for some of its downfalls with excellent design and the iMac and the iPod are prime examples of this great design. If a sleek design is your primary concern when purchasing electronics then Apple is your company. I wish I got the BBC, I would definately check it out.

I know this is kinda off-topic but I am kinda fired up about it right now. I just got done posting a comment to the Antispamist's Spam Forum about the increasing spamming of my web server logs. I am using a script that displays the recent referrers and it is currently half full of spam. Has anyone else had problems with this? This recent bout seems to stem from one guy
I watched something (on CSPAN I think) a week or two ago. It was some kind of state hearing (with congressmen and such) about DRM (primarily the concerns of the MPAA I believe) and an Apple rep was there. He said something along the lines of the MPAA/RIAA's concerns weren't that important because Apple had something in the works that would fix the whole situation. Maybe this is it?
Sorry about the ambiguity of my report, I was doing a couple other things at the same time I was "watching" this hearing. Hopefully someone will know what meeting I am referring to and maybe even be able to quote the Apple employee.
I would actually think that would increase the Marvin references...but your right I didn't read the story. I still got modded up to a 5 though...so much for moderation.
I was amazed by the lack of Marvin references also. Apparently only one other mention in the whole discussion. It will take years or development to create an android as depressed as Marvin.
No, it just seems like the html text would be the least of your worries when visiting web sites. One image can easily have a larger file size than all the html code. Of course, most images are allready in a compressed format so I guess further attempts at compression wouldn't help. BTW, why do you ask...you going to smoke me out?
I have used previous versions of Virtual PC and they were very slow, even on a G4. I have also used virtual PC on a PC (running red hat on XP) and it was also very slow.
By very slow I mean excruciatingly, painfully slow. It is better to just have a shitty old PC with a KVM switch if you are a mac user who needs to use a PC.
The article is about how a bunch of people have seen it and enjoyed. So, it is being distributed in some fashion.

Holy crap! You're right, that isn't a word. I guess I meant populace. Thanks.
true enough. Spieldberg gave them the thumbs up, but who owns the rights to the movie they copied?

If she wan't selling the granola, what is the problem?

Yeah, I noticed a while ago and saw mention of it online but it has recently increased greatly in my logs.

Yeah, the offending urls have just about been pushed off the bottome since I only display the last 50 referrers.

Slashdot is a for profit company and you just helped them out by providing free (quality?) content.
I work for the state of California. All state employee's salaries are public record.
BTW, the state is California.

And what's with the java comment, PHP is pretty much nothing like java.
Yeah, what's with the flaming in an article? If that were a comment it would be modded down as a flame. Why add that line to a PHP article?

That's one reason more sites should take the time to send compressed HTML to begin with.
How do you send compressed html from a web page? I am confused. HTML is just text, why would you compress that?
Wouln't the constant compressing and decompressing contribute to latency? It must compress data by more than five times to compensate
