Actually I had a very different experience so far with my boss. May be I am lucky? I don't know. But my execs never decide on anything unless they consult me. In fact the vendors try to convince me more than my execs. Not to sound too arrogant or cocky, but I have found that if you can convince or prove to your superiors that you are capable, then they will trust you more than any body else.

First of all RIAA are pimps going around bullying people and collecting money. That being said the intellectual property is not that of RIAA but actual artists most of whom don't even hold rights to their own creation

On the other hand GPL software is a creation of group of hard working individuals with profit being the last intent. In my books its completely differet.

Bricolage is the French word for DIY, or, sometimes, hacking.

The way I interpret your statement is that you are suggesting that Bricolage is a piece of hack and thus not worthy. If that is true then I have to disagree. In my short career of 3 years as developer I have come across so many overzealous developers who think that if you have not developed a software from scratch then either you are not worthy of being called a developer or the product is not a serious product.

I fail to understand what is this urge to re-invent the wheel everytime and then end up looking exactly like the other wheels around you.

Developers dont get it that if they want to make a living off it they have to be customer-focused

Very true. But there are products that are completely customer driven. In fact, we have developed a Content Management System which is completely drvien by customer demands. This product is in development for over 5 years now. It started out as a simple web based content editor for our clients' hosting. Slowly, one after the other requests started pouring in. The good thing was that the requests were incremental in nature. Now we are at a stage where we are analyzing whether this product has grown beyond its needs (it has become a hybrid between cpanel and xoops) and does it warrant to be made a product and sold?

There lies the big problem. Our company still wants to have control over it coz 80% of our company's revenue is directly or iderectly generated by this product. So some company execs are questioning whether Open source is the right way. Couple others are saying that open source might be the only way out as there would less risk involved as bulk of the revenue off of a product is generated by support unless you have a product like SAP.

    Definitely interesting times ahead...

Ok I don't think you have looked at products offered by Sun lately. Just to help you recently the Computer Science department in our University decided to build a cluster of 35 nodes with dual opteron processors and 6GB ram on each node with raid. Initially Sun quoted 440K, Dell quoted 450k and a local beige box vendor about 350k. When we told Sun about it they dropped their price to 220K and guaranteed us 90% of published spec performance for hardware for a year otherwise they'd replace whole node for free including shipping. Apart from that they also offered to investigate in to Solaris OS if we can prove that apps would run better on a Linux box with similar hardware.

    Bang! is an understatement here

Pragmatic and technical considerations have driven this change, as Linux continues to gain a greater userbase and more third-party commercial software is made available on the platform

Really, so that means vendors have stopped supplying new softwares for Solaris! Or does it mean that practically Solaris is not technically a viable solution?

I really don't see the need to replace an X system with Y system when the X system does the job for you more than adequately. I don't understand why people are always eager to change systems. Of course someone is going to reply to me and say - "hey universities are research institutions and they need new stuff" - too overrated. I am not trying to root for Solaris here, just don't get why you need to replace a system that can do the job that Linux can.

I have been doing end-user techincal support to even programmers, the so called java programmers and their pcs are infested with spywares and probably don't have critical updates released for the past year. Now that is the state of a programmer. Do you really think an insurance adjuster or a marketing agent is gonna bother with security? The first thing they are gonna look for is whether this xyz system works with my ACT database or my so and so software?

Just go and spend a few minutes and see how a sales person sells a laptop to a customer. Security is not even a remote topic. To them the points that matter are:

    • Does it have good lcd display?
    • Does it have good sound?
    • Can it play my DVD and better can it rip it?
    • And what is its battery life?

Apart from these basic questions I have never seen a customer ask - "Does it come pre-installed with SP2?"
