It is actually no different in India. Back in the day when I was first introduced to computers, I was introduced via games. It is definitely the most appealing way to get kids interested. In fact most of the introductory courses for kids in school and private institutions start with computer games to get kids interested. Then there are a few who show interest in how to program those games coz they don't like it or feel that they can do better job. And I don't see any thing wrong with that. It is a matter of choice and interest. You cannot force a kid to program when he or she is interested in music only.
I wonder how long it will be before the intended users want to play games, or run Excel?
Well, I started using computers in the late 80's. But it wasn't until mid-90s that I really saw computers take off with average Joe. So as I see it, the more people get used to the idea of computers and how it can be useful for them, the more they will look at the idea of doing more with it. Besides if your friend has a cool gadget that can let you do do such and such things you want one too. So its just a matter of wide spread acceptance.
If history is any indicator, this will bomb. I have seen more than a few "sub-(one/two/three)-hundred-dollar" systems. They are eventually built, greeted with millions of yawns, and soon disappear
That is because most of these systems, including cimputer were advertized as being useful for rural population primarily farmers. The intention is good but there are couple of problems:
Most rural farmers still use old methods of farming. They are not mechanized. Unless they are technically savvy, they are not goona use these devices for day-to-day work like accounting etc.
Most of the rural population are very "careful" with gadgets. And I know this because I am from India. They keep it covered and protected like a redneck taking care of his car (pun intented). Thus the device is not used as intented.
Unless manufacturers can address these two issues, I don't think they will be successfull in making these products a success. Besides, you don't give up just because history tells you its not possible.
Would you please bother to give a reasonable argument for "SpaceX=Evil"? Sorry just because Mr.Musk co-founded PayPal and you ended up clicking a link to reset your PayPal password is not a valid reason.
Here is something I have noticed in my career both in private and educational setting. When you are for e.g. setting up a cluster running up a tab in the range of $250-$500k, the accounting dept is not bothered. For them, they have to get this purchase order done now or we loose the money. For the vendors it really doesn't matter if they take a $100-$200k hit because they make more money out of support, upgrades etc; and trust me you will need that.
So if you are talking about enterprise level, then the suggestion of the sys admin or the systems designer wins and trust me I am going for best performance money can buy (its not my $$). But on the other hand, if you are talking small private companies or individuals, your argument has merit.
I doubt it. I know a 60 year old guy who makes well in to six figure salary just fixing bugs for a legacy cobol application for his company. I know a desktop end user tech support person making six figure income. All he does his cleans adwares and installs anti-virus. My college buddy who has a Masters from a reputable univ. had a hard time finding job. And when he finally did, he got comparatively measly 35k.
The key is not what you know, how you sell it and where you sell it?
Being lazy is fine in my books. But incompetence is one that ticks me off. I am relatively novice when it comes to DNS administration - 2 years, but I have met "idiots" who claim to have 7 years experience and on top of that they are lazy. Every now and then we have a client who goes crazy saying that I cannot "see" the site. Then I have to bug their respective ISP DNS admin to take action and by the time they do (usually 3-7 days) its all updated. At that time this Mr. Bug shot steps in and tells me how I am screwing up his valuable time. Oh well...
It may get to the point that it's illegal to export security patches to various countries
Right, and other countries are simply gonna wait till USA comes around and helps them. Do you really think other countries are idiots? Heck slowly but surely, most of the major OS development is also moving out of US. In fact Microsoft has a OS development unit in India. And you really think those Indians are gonna wait? And with all the trouble Microsoft is having in Other countries they are just gonna say yes to whatever those dick headed congressmen are gonna say? Last time I checked, corporations run American policies not American policies.
Ok did you just post that because you had to? Or were you really thinking on a Monday morning? War-time or peace, security holes have to be fixed, of course as long as that company/individual/group is around. You don't just call in sick and not patch it just because its war-time. Heck its war-time right now and I am seeing Microsoft release patches left and right.
On the other hand if you are imaginging an situation like world war, and you are worried about your stupid windows having no patches, then here is a tip - get a life, find a bunker.
Maybe they are against having public libraries, also?
Ok when was the last time you saw someone in the library besides the same geeks and nerds who have been there for years! There is no money in libraries or streetlights. But on the other hand "talking" - now you're talking!
"...so they can gracefully and marginally make changes in service."
What country are you from? And if you live in America, when was the last time you saw a company do anything remotely close to gracefull? And that too telcos! Sprint PCS slammed me a bill for $75 this month becoz for the first time in 5 years, I crossed the day time limit. You call that graceful and marginal?
Amazon has been one of the innovative online business for a long time. How about streaming rental service? Strike a deal with Tivo or somebody else. Why don't they still embrace the future?

The reson the shoppers abandon easily is probably because of some popular techniques the online retailers use:
- They force you to add item to cart to see the price.
- After you add item to the cart, they tell you that you have to pay sales tax
- After you add item to cart, you are told that there is a $20 shipping and handling fee, and finally...
- The item is back oredered.
Duh!Yeah welcome to slashdot...
The key is not what you know, how you sell it and where you sell it?
May be they should revoke it.
Don't you hate those adwares?
Yep a cult also has a similar argument...oops!
Apart from that I'd say less of jargons and catchy phrases and more of useful and practical information to end user.
How many erotic novels have you written till date?
