For a Linux junky you made some very surprising overstatements. Few days ago I reinstalled Fedora 3 on my son's computer (from scratch - HD clicked out). PC is not terribly fast - 733 MHz PIII. FC3 custom install (3.5 GB), all updates, flash and java plugins, Real player, mp3 addons, xine (for DVD), mplayer + mplayer plugin, TT fonts, Nintendo emulator - all together took around 4 hours.
All these but mplayer were rpm installs, so it's pretty easy. Mplayer is also not too hard to compile but takes time on a slow machine, plus takes another chunk of time to re-configure prelinking, so Windows media plays nicely.
Granted, I had all updates, additional rpms and tarballs ready on a home server but that's what any Linux junky would do, isn't it?
Ah, yes, takes single mouse click and about 5 seconds to play DVD.
Mod this post up, please! Not everybody can afford secure, hardware based ID technology but everybody needs to secure their systems - no matter how little important are they for the rest of the world.
You know, not everybody has a luxury of having ALL XP patches on hand when installing OS. Most people must connect to the internet in order to download everything that's required. Unfortunatelly, this (established connection) is all some exploits need to take the machine over and pretty quickly, too. So, what you just said is pretty much bullshit.
To the article - Mr Tenant is full of shit also. Internet IS open but in a sense that people with military/police background (not just in US) don't seem able to comprehend. It IS regulated but mostly in democratic way, which they obviously don't understand either. I've got 2 questions for him:
Why was some press banned from the conference?
Why does he think that financial systems are or should be connected to the internet?
Yeah, providing we are ITIL certified. Seriously though, I find 2 decades long predictions pretty unreliable even if they sound totally logical today. Nobody knows how will IT trends in general look like 20 years from now.
Agreed. The other issue I see here is the credibility of OSC compared to that of IBM's, Novell's, Red Hat's and the likes.
Not that I think OSC does not have credibility - I just don't know about that - but am wondering as to who would bean counters trust more when they sign cheques?

Why don't you spend some time explaining why should they use one of Linux distros instead? Burn Knoppix CD and let them try it? Install FC3? I can't imagine under what circumstances would they decide on their own to switch OS?
How do you define x86 systems that Red Hat provides to half of Wall Street huge investment banks then? It's not like they're running 10 nodes samba workgroup or five users mail server.
it demonstrates that the critical thinking skills of the voters themselves need "fixing"
Well, that's common and understandable reaction of the defeated side. Watching from distance (New Zealand) it appears that democrats missed the opportunity to do so over the last couple of years of campaigning - their campaign was largely based on attacks on Bush himself. That way they appeared very negative and very arrogant. Concentrating on what and how they would do if elected could have sent more positive message and persuade more people to vote for Kerry.
If I were American, there was no way Kerry would get my vote this time around.
Admining Linux is not easy. Learning how to do it is, given you have plenty of time on your hands. You need to do huge amount of reading (howto_s, man pages, some good books) while actually DOING all that stuff on (at least) 2 connected computers. Once you're able to setup most common services without constantly refering to docos, you're well on your way.
I am not sure what distro is your company's choice but if you have an opportunity to do so, suggest Red Hat. Product is stable, support is unbelievably good, contains fair set of tools/facilities to ease sysadmin work, there are lots of resources around and there is a decent training/certificaton program available for it.
Whatever the choice though, make sure you do your advanced learning with the distro that will be installed at your place. And good luck.
That does sound scarry. However, I reckon the only real plot here is how will NZ Telecom make even more money. They house Weta's cluster and they own Gen-i.
They've selfinflicted too much damage for anything they plan on doing in the future to have any success. I predict slow and painful death - that's exactly what they deserve.
Whoever tries to muck around other people's computers should be prosecuted and punished. Not doing any damage? I don't care. What's next - random passers by jumping through my window to turn off the light I left on when I went out?
I reckon that little extra effort would be worthwhile for people. I buy from couple of wholesalers who supply decent hardware for good price, so it's not an issue for me.
Price wise - margins are minimal these days and it only makes a difference if you buy lot of stuff over time, not for one or two machines - meaning that people who can't buy wholesale don't really pay much more.
I get manufacturer's warranty on all PC components. 3y on HDD for small ($10-15) additional premium. MB and CPU come with 3 y warranty as a standard and I make sure RAM is one of those 'Lifetime warranty' ones.
All these but mplayer were rpm installs, so it's pretty easy. Mplayer is also not too hard to compile but takes time on a slow machine, plus takes another chunk of time to re-configure prelinking, so Windows media plays nicely.

Much better.

You're not serious, are you? 7.2, 7.3 and 8?
???

Oh, yes one more:
Who the fuck does he think he is?!?

...how they always seem to know what best fits our needs and then (6 months later) give us what we need now.

Open source is the answer. RH will eventually GNU GPL it.
Well, in that case something's definitelly going on upstairs.

You're not serious, right? Who reads your comment then? And this reply (before it gets moded +4)?
No.

And, yes - they are evil.

Surely, you could use some of these accelerons.
Price wise - margins are minimal these days and it only makes a difference if you buy lot of stuff over time, not for one or two machines - meaning that people who can't buy wholesale don't really pay much more.
I'd rather do that (well, I do) than get paid to run Windows (which I don't).
