Sorry. It was actually two commentaries in one post.
I don't think Google is evil because they are protecting their product. I don't even think they are necessarily evil. What I do think is they are trying to appear to serve one master (community and the good of it) while actually serving another (the shareholders and board)
$13/month for 24 months beats $5/month forever. That's with TiVo's lifetime subscription works out to at their monthly rate. Pay for 2 years in advance, and then it's free.
13 * 24 = 312 bucks. After 12 months your Tivo Breaks. Go buy a new one! Gets outdated, go get a new one!
I'll pay the same 312 bucks after about 63 months. In that time, I have a full warranty plus the free upgrades to a different box when then come out.
And only 60 hours of non-HD recording time? Bah! My upgraded Series 1 can do 85, and I still have an available drive bay in it to double that if I want. Plus it has an ethernet interface so I can pull shows off and archive to DVD. Good luck getting Comcast to let you archive your recordings.
As for HD, who needs it?
85 hours are more that 60, that is a bonus. As for HD, who needs it? Those of use with a HD tv that's who! And while I haven't tried ripping movies from a saved show yet, I have no problem ripping them and burning them to DVD.
I particularly like the "iPod for $10!" scams where you pay ten bucks and then advertise around and get more people to pay their ten bucks. Every "cycle" the guy at the front gets his new iPod!
what they don't tell you and lay out is that if you are #1500 on the list and the list cycles every 100 nwe signups is you are waiting for 150,000 people to sign up after you.. Good luck!
you see these asswipes on ebay all the time selling the "plan" and people are buying..
Yea the only problem is unless enough people are seeding it's crap. I tried to download the latest fedora core 3 using BT and it was so freaking slow I just went and downloaded the isos from a mirror ftp site..
BT for mass distribution will only work for distribution items that are vastly popular. Distributing something that a small fraction of the BT population use will not be good.
Wow. Doing the math, things really get put into perspective.
In 1994-5 I used to dial up the local "warez" cache at 300 baud and download a game filling the c64's 1541 floppy disk (one side) which was 180k. it generally took about an hour.
one BLOCK every 3 seconds or so so ~ 1/3 k a second.
One Hour = 180k
Now. With broadband, my speed is 3Mb. ~ 350k / sec or 10,000 times faster!
>>The liberals in the U.S. are the intolerant ones. They really dispise those who aren't rich, caucasian, Christian, and heterosexual.
Not really. just intolerant of the lefts weak sauce
>>nd you're right, it's the liberals who spearheaded this war in Iraq, a war that took resources AWAY from Afghanistan.
No. The liberals were too busy trying to appease our enemies to start a war. And thanks to the US 9 million afghans (over 4.5 million WOMEN) are going to VOTE for the first time in their lives.
>>Again, those god-forsaken liberals are the ones who cover up corrupt revolving-door government contracts, alienate our oldest allies, reject international environmental agreements, and refer to entire countries as "EVIL."
Hey you are actually right on this one! Chirac and Schroeder were trying to protect BILLIONS of dollars worth of oil contracts with Iraq. Their main reason for opposing the US (other than their wanting to show the world that they can be players in the world)
>>Geez, I just can't seem to remember. I guess I'll just watch some more television. It always makes me happy.
Good idea. Or listen to Air America. That is if you live somewhere that they actually have not been taken off the air.
I guess since their land is a "most holy Islamic nation" we ought to give them a pass then.
Bin laden saying that "the US will invade your country, the US will take your oil, the US is ruled by Jews and is acting to protect Israel" is no more prophetic or surprising than if he were to say, "The US will bring planes and tanks and guns"!
Personally I think the war we waged has been too considerate. The 1500 that are currently holed up in the "holy" shrine in Iraq now sounds like a good place to drop a few 2500 pound bombs and level the dump.
But of course that would only be appropriate if it were a christian church.
You've been doing a fantastic job mirroring our propaganda plan in forcing the infidels out of our holy land. Continue on the following path.
--Conduct a media campaign to fight the enemy's publicity. The campaign should focus on the following important points:
a) Attempt to cause a rift between the American people and their government, by demonstrating the following to the Americans:
--That the U.S. government will lead them into further losses of money and lives.
--That the government is sacrificing the people to serve the interests of the rich, particularly the Jews.
--That the government is leading them to the war front to protect Israel and its security.
--America should withdraw from the current battle between Muslims and Jews.
This plan aims to create pressure from the American people on their government to stop its campaign against Afghanistan, on the grounds that the campaign will cause major losses to the American people.
--Imply that the campaign against Afghanistan will be responded to with revenge blows against America.
Wow! At first I thought I might have been reading a game plan that the liberal left uses to combat the just and rightous war being waged against terrorism, but it was just an email from Bin Laden suggesting a tactic they use to fight the US.

Here's what I think would have been the fairest to the consumers.
Every time an album hits #1, the industry must give out 10,000 copies. When they've given out their quota this practice stops.
How hard was that?
Joe Sixpack CAN use gigabit Ethernet and faster

I am not an A/V professional but I sure benefited from upgrading the internal network of my house to Gigabit.
After dumping the hour of DV from the camera or capturing the latest episode of Deadwood (14 gig per hour of video) it's nice to have the bandwidth to transfer it to the Network Attached Storage (Go Linux!).
Having the extra bandwidth makes the NAS seem and act like a local drive. After editing the video I process it right to the NAS.
Having the extra bandwitch is noticable and I wouldn't want to go back to 100mb.
The law says nothing about IP. It all depends on what you were stupid enough to agree to if you have to sign an employment agreement.
Even then, those agreements can be difficult to enforce, even if you were stupid enough to sign away your rights to a jury trial which many of those agreements ask you do to.
All I have to say to them is "prove it". I do not agree that you should steal source code from a company you did not write, but I have a hard time letting that have everythin that's inside MY head.
You can explain how to obtain or manufacture all of the components to Sarin gas or a bomb but when you start assembling the final product or encourage others to do so, that is bad and possibly illegal.
You and I might think that building a cruise missle in the garage is a cool project but there are many others that would like to fly it into a building in New York.
I always make sure that I have copies of the source code of applications I have worked on so in case something happens with my employer I WON'T have to use nefarious means to retrieve what is mine.
I know many might say that employers own the intellectual property that you generate while working for them, but I don't agree. If I develop something innovative whiile working there, it's mine. If I come up with a solution for a problem am I supposted to forget the solution and never use it again if I go elsewhere?
Sorry. It was actually two commentaries in one post.

O
1) Position yourself as the altrusitic, common man's company. Appear driven by community and the common good.
2) Shop yourselves to VC's and get that IPO in motion.
3) Now that you have the souls onboard, show your true motives. Profit!
Pay per click is a model that invites dishonesty. CPM (Cost per thousand) impressions is a much clearer model, however less profitable.
Ah yea! I forgot that no other country in the world has that stupid sales tax we have here in the states. They'll save thousands!

Because I can't reply to every post from the tin foil hat wearing crowd, this mass reply will have to do.
Tin foil hat jackasses: This is the type of control Bush and his cronies want to have over US!

Sorry to see TiVO will be taking that over. I left TiVo because of their crap.

I didn't see the submission date but the PC case modders have been doing this for years. Including writing drivers to control the colors via software.
Excellent reply.

Going to war and ending the holocaust was not a just and rightous war?
You must be a member of the looney left...

Ha! I Defeat the "postercomment" algorithm!
The other manufactures better hurry as most of the domestics have been way ahead of the curve.
Ford patented the transmission that dies after 20,00 miles
Chrysler already patented the Minivan / Roadside Grill
And Firestone already patented the "self blowing" tires.
Soundscan is independent aren't they? they'd have to manipulate the actual scanning of albums at the checkout counter.
I'm assuming if they manipulated albums that were shit they'd then have to explain to the artist why they aren't getting paid more or renewed etc.
"But I sold 100,000 albums!"
"umm. Well. Actuall you only sold 1000. Glitch"
