I propose read/write heads that are stationary, and the width of the radius of the disk, and that are read/write switchable electronically, rather than mechanically.
This would enable faster seek times, simultaneous read/write of multiple non-contiguous sectors, etc.
I give this idea away for the benefit of humanity, in the spirit of the GPL, and freeware.
Enjoy!
Seriously, does nearly a quarter million dollar fine punishment fit the actual crime?
Or is this money not punative, but merely recouping RIAA financial losses?
Thats $9250 per song.
Does that mean that at $.99 per song on iTunes she supplied nearly 10,000 would be customers with free music?
"Then you could set it up with little hammers to hit the strings, and make rolled up punch cards to store the data on."
There is actually a similar device in a small town, in a truck stop south of Las Vegas.
It's set up like a jukebox, and little hammers are over each string and fret position. There is also some type of percussion, if I recall, and other mechanically played instruments.
It was atrociously out of tune [could have used a tuner], but an amazing machine nonetheless.
"You couldn't achieve tuning by measuring tension, because that could vary based on string guage and material so it's got to rely on some kind of wave processing."
Even if you set it for material, grime and sweat would make it play flat.
OMG there's already an awful train to JFK. It's so damn slow you need to add a good chunk of time to your trip, it stops forever at each terminal and is slow as sh*t. And it costs $7.
You used to be able to catch the A train for $2. and then catch the bus for free, and it got you to your terminal a hell of a lot quicker, and they ran much more frequently.
The US federal government is $9 trillion ($9,000,000,000,000) in debt.
Interest on the debt amounted to $406 billion ($406,000,000,000) last year.
Compare that to NASA at $15 Billion, Education at $61 Billion, and Department of Transportation at $56 Billion. [from federalbudget.com]
Look past the American flag lapel pins to find the true Patriots, if there even are any. This is simply treasonous fiscal mismanagement.
What's the point of providing laptops to people with no money who spend most of their time scratching around looking for food and water?
To bombard them with ads for things they have no hope of affording?
How about education instead? I know there are online institutions, but give 'em a computer and they'll go straight to something else. Prawns.
Or in the (paraphrased) words of Sam Kinnison, send them luggage, YOU LIVE IN THE DESERT! MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS!
You should always go for the lowest price, when having disks made to reinstall the crapware, adware, and trialware that came with it.
That way you can tell the world that you're an empowered and enlightened consumer.
Anyone who has ever driven in Midtown Manhattan with a GPS unit, even with a rooftop antenna, knows that it's impossible to get an accurate and reliable satellite fix.
How can there be "waste heat"?
This does not seem like an efficient use of the power generated.
Doesn't the fission reactor produce heat, to boil water, to make steam, which runs turbines?
How could humans survive for any length in the hostile environment of space, inside controlled micro environments, for even years, never mind generations, when he is already killing and poisoning himself here upon a much more forgiving, and seemingly infinitely larger planet?
All it would take is for one inhabitant to go "postal", to destroy precarious life support systems and wipe out the entire colony.
I hate to be negative, but the fate of humankind, in this type of environment, rests not in the hands of the geniuses, and creators, but rather at the hands of the sociopaths, vandals, who appear in every facet and dirty corner of human society.
From what I've seen of this ape we call homo sapiens, he doesn't stand a chance encapsulated in space.
I'm a long time laptop user, and moving my whole arm/shoulder/wrist about just to move a mouse around the desk and control a cursor, just seems so senseless, when, with a touchpad I can simply make tiny movements with my fingertips.
What could be more efficient than that?

She should declare bankruptcy and not pay her lawyer either.
That was about the weakest defense I've ever heard, basically "I didn't do it".

This will expand market share, cut much further into Windows, and be a stepping stone to move users to Apple hardware.
I didn't even know old ipods could be synced in Linux.
Is this done in iTunes for Linux?

"Ringle, ringle, coins how they jingle," Scrooge's lustful song of money and greed.
Quite appropriate name considering...
Oh wait, the article says it has a 6,000 gallon fuel tank, and a nuclear power plant aboard.

It seems something akin to the GPL would be a good solution.
Keep public domain works and their derivatives public.

To make an analogy; if a million dollars isn't enough, ten cents won't help you much either.
Who cares if it was for nothing?
Humankind is a "meaning creating" animal.
It matters not to the universe if there's no meaning.

What are the possible ramifications of releasing so much of the earth's core temperature into the atmosphere as steam?
Seismic? Climate?

It certainly shows in the current state of the world, that stupid people are breeding faster than smart ones.
Kill each other!
How long before we officially relinquish self-declared title of most free country in the world?
