We, here in the Rocket City (Huntsville, AL), have noticed a decline in work ethic, morals, and family values from the influx of Northerners.

And as far as 'generally educated people' goes - we turned out a lot of the International Space Station, the Saturn V Rocket, countless military technologies, and other hi-tech 'gee-wiz' that would make you cream your pants. Oh yeah, more and more automotive companies are establishing manufacturing plants in our area. We figure they're getting tired of the lazy, union yankees showing up for work drunk.

What has your hometown ever done?

I used to live in a market where our only choice for cable was Comcast. Year to year, little by little, they kept increasing the cost of basic service. When I moved to a larger city I had a choice between Comcast and two other companies. Needless to say, I didn't go with Comcast. My cable is now cheaper and I get more channels. My service has cable, telephone, and broadband internet all in one package for about $90/month. Before, I was paying almost $40 for basic cable. What a rip off.

What a cool dad! My dad was a bastard...TV remote in one hand and a stiff leather belt in the other. He used to get all bent out of shape when I would take the motors out of stuff to build different, original stuff. He was too thick-headed to see my potential. I'm now a mechanical engineer who makes more a year than he does and he can't stand it. Sometimes I buy stuff just to smash it and use parts for something else. I am a mad scientist in my basement just to spite him.

In most industrial applications you only need a small subset of the hand's capabilities. Having a bunch of robots putting in one screw is more efficient than having one robot putting in a bunch of screws. It makes for a more speedy assembly (although more assembly space). This hand would be good for a putting in a cheap screw ;)

  17. Re:Joke on DIY BMW Computer Chair · · Score: 1

I must agree. I used to work for Ford Motor Company until I got tired of living in metro Detroit and moved back home to the Rocket City. I was an engineer in the Vehicle Dynamics Objective Testing group. Oh yeah, it was cool, cooler than you can imagine. I got to drive every kind of car you could think of (except Chrysler...go figure). Often times to the limit. I always went for the BMW's on the handling course. They were a blast. I wasn't worried about spinning the tires on launch because the real fun happens in the corners. Man that M5 was on rails. The X5 wasn't bad either. Ford design engineers were equally impressed. They have taken countless cues from BMW. For example, take a look at the front over-hang (the amount of car in front of the front wheels) on the Lincoln LS, look familiar. Before I left we hired a former BMW executive to be over the Vehicle Dynamics group. There was even a time when Ford was talking of buying BMW. This was just before the Firestone saga (before I spent 4 months in the AZ desert testing different vehicle/tire combinations).

However, I do think the stereotype 'dickheadedness' is probably still valid. Most BMW sales are based on status symbolism. If they only knew what to do with them.

I, as well as most of my peers that graduated from engineering school with me, left there debt free. Most of us paid our way through school with co-op jobs with local companies. BTW, I'd rather be in the 100's of THOUSANDS of DRONES in a docile work force (with sufficient, stable income) than the 100's of THOUSANDS of PUNKS flipping burgers at Burger King like you.
