    For one, Blu allows for arbitrary code execution. So you could have some disc that phones home or something not allowing the disc to play without it. It also allows constantly changing encryption schemes. HDDVD used AACS. That's it, nothing fancy.

    Walmart has securiy detectors at the entrance/exit to the store. They perform "WGA" style checks every time you enter/exit the store.

    You said it yourself, that's the HD-DVD consortium which, last I checked, has a lot more players than Microsoft.

    In the case of Apple they only keep supporting one version of their OS most of the time. The second oldest will get some updates, but they will be slow and stop soon after the newer one is released. Therefor should a worm ever make its way onto one of the older versions, you'd be wanting to upgrade right quick. Still you're not required to upgrade, but there are some things that will prohibit you from using the computer for anything newer that comes out.

    If you had a bought a Mac with 10.0, then the costs would be rather different if you upgraded each time.
    10.1 was free (correct?)
    10.2 was $130
    10.3 was $130
    10.4 was $130
    10.5 is $130

    That brings us to $520. This is what the grandparent was talking about, not your misrepresentation of it.

    What good is edge if it isn't even available for use? That's what the grandparent was pointing out..... So while you say Edge is fine... there are significant limitations on the locations it can be used.

    Microsoft is nowhere near that in terms of setup and install. Let us know when they fix the install software/reboot problem

    The article left out some important details. That cost was an estimate taken from retail values of software, which includes MS Office.

    Obviously nothing about code reuse, that's what. STL is all about not reinventing the wheel all the time. A bunch of eggheads have put together efficient data wrappers and algorhithms that can use those data wrappers FOR YOU. You don't need to make a mess of uncompatable code that nobody but you will use.

    Not true. There is a plugin for Office 2003 to use the new formats, as well as a viewer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925180
