    I just wanted to add that the fan is not on when the card is not being used for 3D. So if you are sitting at your desktop, the noise is not because of the graphics card. This is the same for newer Radeons and the GeForce FX series as well.

    I don't think I'd ever buy something from a company that cannot have someone code HTML properly, let alone their Flash is badly optimized.

    After loading the page, it asked me to install Flash 7, even tho I already have the newest one from Macromedia's site installed.

    Then, during the movie, randomly there would be slowdown.

    Well, it's worth mentioning that sometimes Dell will cover things that are not under warranty, but only rarely... I doubt this would be covered, but it's worth a try if you're willing to do it. They replaced a DVD drive of mine that was a year past warranty anyways... Maybe they just like me or smth ;P

    In Windows 95/98 you could get rid of the login screen by deleting the pwl files and then using a blank password. In Windows 2000/XP you get a login screen unless you use TweakXP to auto-login.

    I myself have a laptop and a Linksys wireless card.. and an internal mini-PCI wireless card. Knoppix detects neither and I have to use ether to go online with it. I had installed the Linksys in Windows XP and it just works. I plug it in and it works, I pop it out and it's off. No troubles. I suspect that some of the other issues you are having may be preventing it from working. If it's a Dell and they were smart enough to buy the service plan, they should use it.

    You have an incorrect view of closed source projects that are funded. Here one cannot simply release a patch at their whim, it must go through extensive testing. MS expecially tests their products with a large selection of programs because such a large amount of people rely on them.

    I guess that's better than your shell not knowing what anything is and being able to try and run anything as a program. For Example: in *nix download virus.gif and then run it.

    Firefox is mostly stable and highly prone to memory leaks. So no, it's not ready for prime time. How are people using Windows 98 and such supposed to use it? You people advocate it all over the place but forget that it still has flaws and that's why it's not at 1.0

    Considering it doesn't allow you to pass parameters as mentioned by the article, all of that would be very hard to accomplish.

    You sir are incorrect. You can certainly make Windows that use D3D TRANSLUCENT in Windows XP and possibly 2000. A friend of mine made his app fade out when minimized and fade in when restored. It was a game that uses D3D.

    Longhorn will break no more compatability than Windows XP did. All the Win32 calls are still valid.

    Windows: Insert CD, follow on screen instructions.

    Linux: open the command line, find the name of the program you want to install, type distribution specific commands in followed by the name of the program. -OR- Distribution does not support previous steps, find program, ungz/untar, find where program was uncompressed to, config, compile, find where program was compiled to.

    You'll see them and lose, I believe (If in America). You see, we have this thing called the DMCA. Can you provide legal evidence that hacking UO for non commercial servers was proved legal in court? Emulators are legal, but the content you play in them may not be. Emulators being legal doesn't make commerical ROMs legal.

    You hate MS, yet you appear to love Apple AND Linux.... You must be burning with confliction inside. Given the opportunity, Apple would quite possibly be worse than MS. Remember, Apple controls the software AND the hardware. They also charge more for it.

    Make, Apache, graphical file system browsers (from at least as early on as 1998), most graphical system configuration utilities, any program that allows you to script shell prompts (duh, emacs etc)

    I guess every program on almost every OS is vulnerable then. Do I need to mention tin foil hat or is it already obvious/redundant? Several *nix programs/commands call several other *nix programs/commands in of all things THE SHELL. OHGNO WE'RE DOOMED!

    FireFox's feature of leaking memory doesn't serve to make it faster on my or any other system. I'm waiting for 1.0 when hopefully they will have fixed the UI, fixed the leaks, and hopefully made it even faster. As for current, it is noticeably slower on many of the web pages I visit.
