Most of what you say is lacking in Windows is available via TweakUI. Some of the things you like in non-Windows are things that normal people would never be able to do. If there's any problem during an install, their machines are sent in to a shop.
To top it all, doesn't MPlayer used hacked dll's for some of its compatibility? Such a thing is a DMCA violation. Regardless of how you feel about it, it's still a current law.
The first GTA3 game on the PC was attrocious. It was buggy, laggy, and had control problems. It wasn't until Vice City was released that most of these problems went away.
The P4 can perform a variety of floating point calculations via the SSE2 instruction set. It performs them two at a time. Some of them are: add, subtract, multiply, divide, min, max, square root.
Most tech places tell people about MSConfig, you can use it instead of the registry to find out what starts up. There are also services, which are less likely to be talked about. Users do have a default home directory (My Documents), but one of the ideas in Windows is sharing - so you can share information/programs in various places. There is also the ability to run programs as a restricted user via right click.
Sun's refusal to open up their technology to anyone who wants was seen as a big win for MS as they forged forward to counter-sue Sun over the Java technology....
You fail to realise that a large portion of the OS integrated helper apps rely on the IE rendering engine to display. The file explorer/manager uses IE for display, Add/Remove Programs uses it. There's dozens of apps that all use it. It's basic code re-use. Something the *nix distributions should look into getting better. Then they'd have less dependency problems.
The question is why did Apple choose to use a format that only works on their platform, and the answer is quite simple: lock-in. WMA is supported by a variety of devices that are not Apple's.
I am probably what you would call an experienced windows user with a deep technical knowledge of software and how it works. I have very little to do to keep myself safe from such attacks. I run Norton and have had 0 virus infections in the past 6 years.
Please note this is a regular Athlon FX and not the FX 53 mentioned in the article. This negates your ideals that the P4EE makes the FX seem like chump change. The FX is a highly priced CPU, as are P4EE's.
I honestly don't think opening the code up to the public will help. The only thing we would get then is a million MS product rip-offs and some free alternatives. This would mean that MS would have to compete with software that is not for sale but given away. By having to compete with this, you will only be able to make money off services and support. This is hardly the same amount of money that they use to fund their products currently.
If you limit yourself to one platform, you open yourself up to less need for testing and you can optimize for that platform much more readily. This is often noticed in games that come out on all the consoles, as they will not look as good as games developed soley for one console.
From what I can tell, all it means is you can't take screenshots without turning down hardware acceleration. Big deal.
So all in all, you're better off buying a card based on other merits.

ATI has Macrovision checks in too. Just check out what they say about their AIW line and DVD playback.

In response to #4, there is a free Word viewer that will view almost any Word file if not all.

Co-op was taken out because it worked poorly over the internet. It was in the early builds, but was very very laggy.
The ponies would eat children when no one was looking and they would greet us first with a book titled "How to serve man"

Yeah, I'm really bored.
The license is transferable. If you RTFA, you can see that they point out how to back up the license and transfer it to another machine.

The browser war yes, the war of the SPAM/virus replacements will have just begun.
I didn't want my stock stereo, but I was forced to get it and pay for it. Your analogy is flawed.
Why does Microsoft need to break iTunes? Apple does a good enough job of that themselves. ;)
Will it have really obscure commands that require a keyboard? you better believe!
Will you have to buy the 100lb manual seperately? Oh baby!

I use Norton Antivirus and have it scan my e-mail. Not only that, I don't run attachments sent to me by random people ;)
Problem solved.
$855 - Pentium 4 3.2GHz 800MHz 2MB Extreme
$733 - Athlon 64 FX

Probably still faster than BT downloads.

If the application allows you to select the device you wish to play on, then yes.. Otherwise I have no idea :)
