DirectShow -> Effortlessly play any video or audio in any codec installed on the computer. The same code that plays an MP3 will play an Ogg Vorbis or any other format.
DirectMusic -> Write music in pieces, have an algorhithm generate the music on the fly from the pieces it knows according to the mood you set.
Does Linux have force feedback support? I have a few FF devices and in some games it makes them more fun. Sort of a niche market, but it's still there in DirectInput.
It's very simple, in your Desktop Preferences make the TV-out the default desktop. You can only do this if you have the TV-out on all the time tho. My laptop has a button that switches to TV-out, maybe there's a way to do the same for you.
I've played Diablo 2 for at least 18 hours straight a couple days in a row, without rebooting Windows. Make sure it's fully patched to the newest one, as they got rid of some nasty leaks and whatnot. Most of what you experience is probably Diablo 2's fault, as it was written for Glide in mind and is very resource hungry for such an old game.
To add to the Trolling I guess I'll have to state some stuff. AMD is trying to pull a quick one on people like you. The 3200 is outperformed by the 2800 in several tests, as is the 3000. That being said, both were outperformed by the P4 1.8gHz in video encoding tests.
Interesting news article.... I wonder why they are going after file traders then? It's one big mess. I don't think anybody knows how Canadian laws really work;)
Most consoles at that time operated in a fairly similar fashion. The video hardware would draw the frame, and then a v-blank would be triggered. During the v-blank, you could execute code and manipulate the video data. When not in v-blank, you could calculate game related things. For example, a common game would manipulate a local set of data with the information for the sprites. The v-blank is triggered and the local data is copied into vram. V-blank ends and the process begins again.
The new version of Outlook has a lot better spam protection, for one. There's a lot of things here and there that they made better. You don't see them until you actually use the program, but they're there.
This is incorrect. The law states that you cannot download music. The law allows you to borrow a CD from a friend and make a copy. A friend cannot copy the music for you, you must do it yourself. That is what the law for Canada states.
You obviously haven't heard of the NST in Redmond. They are responsible for titles such as 1080 and they did the re-release of the Zelda 64 games on the GameCube.
You mention Bungie, and yes they are somewhat seperate from MS. However, they moved up to Washington to be closer to MS.
Aside from this, there are other games that get made at MS. Project Gotham and Mechassault were both done alongside other companies, but most of the work went on inside MS itself.
I think it's a common misconception that the XBox controller is too big. It is indeed large, but it my hands much better than the PS controller. The PS controller is rather small in comparison, my fingers often overlap the buttons and not contact them at the finger tip. I find it interesting that you did not mention the GameCube controller... I believe it is far worse than the two you discussed. It is clunky, often painfull, and only geared for Nintendo-like games.
They are #2 worldwide, and unlike Microsoft, they have very strong teams in-house which produce quality games.
This is completely wrong. I live near MS, and I know quite a few people who work at MS on games specificly for the XBox. I am near Nintendo, as well, and know a handfull of the people who work at NST on games for the GameCube. MS puts out many more games in-house than Nintendo, probably due to larger budgets.
You like spreading FUD. MSVC 7.1 was announced as being close to 99% compliant with the actual C standards. I agree that people coding ought to be able to script things, but I don't think it should be required.
You speak of bloat, the big Visual Studio install that covers VB, C/C++, and C# is roughly 400MB. This includes a large collection of libraries that do things the default GCC do not.
All around, I think you're blind to the reality of what goes on. I work at a company programming for money, you are a hobby coder. What you talk about shows the difference in the thinking.

Or in my case every 10 seconds because X-Windows got scrood up somehow. For both OS's, the reboot schedule is more depending on what software you run. I can generally keep my XP machine going strong for about a month. Then I gotta try out some new program and it's pretty bad. Generally some OSS project that is only in alpha. Or the latest game demo, or something similar. That's right, I play games and still only need to reboot on a monthly basis. Try and do that with your Linux distro and the binary video drivers that everyone complains about.
The shell you speak of is already part of the OS. The archive tools are not programming related, use whatever you want. Grep sounds like the built in search function from what I've heard. Perl is a scripting language. Windiff does as you think. For CVS, the professional versions of MSVC have come with Source Safe.
MSVC comes with much more than an IDE, but people like you never see past that.
Default MSVC install installs a text only version of MSDN that covers way more than man pages ever could. Not to mention that MSDN is what we call "user friendly", something man pages are nowhere near.
I've never had my profile get hosed in the past two years. I could see how it could happen. What really bugs me tho, is why their important data files were in their profiles and not off on some server that gets backed up every now and then. Really has nothing to do with what OS you're running, the setup you describe sounds flawed to me.

Mostly just trolling, but check out stuff like this makes one ponder for a bit about the whole thing.
WineX has trouble with old games, let alone newer ones. I want my Worms Armageddon before I even consider changing over.
Then when an error occurs with something, who do we blame? The hardware company? The game company?
Direct3D is supported by more than one platform, but as far as the non-console gaming market is concerned, it's the one that makes the money.

What about uspell? ;D

Office 2003 is not in the affected list. Check your info first before posting. Thanks for proving my points.

Go visit ti-calc.org and feel dwarfed and illiterate.

or you can get XP Pro from dell for ~$100 extra. Sounds like the better deal to me.
Right, instead move to an AOL/Time-Warner solution. The non-convicted monopolists are much better I guess. ;)
Thus ends my rant.
