Actually, its been done before. Remember when we had a "stable" and an "unstable" pair? IMHO the idea of forking into desktop and server versions is a technical answer to a political problem with various developer's goals.
How do you *think* distros happened 10 years ago? That's right, with FTP. Usually the distro would host a big FTP server and all the expenses of that. Others would peer or offer smaller servers in the case of wealthy individuals. And guess what? It worked just fine.
Well, the way I see it, you get pretty much guaranteed attribution if you distribute by signing the copyrights to FSF. Sure, you can distribute on your own, but if attribution matters at all to you, then you are stuck with the hassle of ensuring it, instead of relying on the umbrella of the FSF and their attorneys (solicitors).
In this way, I totally agree with the BSD-attribution and Creative Commons licenses, even though I prefer to use GNU software.
IMHO if you are going to free your work, then attribution is the very least recompense that one could reasonably expect in a civil society.
Interesting observation, I wonder if anybody has done any studies about this. Not to fear, I'm at least 4th generation USA and sometimes I still feel the limits of language patterns and culture. German and Scottish in my case.
Yes, I am aware of this situation - my own family is quite similar in some cases (grrr...). So I decided to take advantage of the relative lack of sophistication (no pun intended) and set all the send and recv default to plain txt and ask for other images/file types. Er, basically just so I could get some sleep.
Anything downstream of it gets their water from it. This includes at least half a dozen states and possibly Canada AFAIK. I live near Niagara Falls and I'll be watching for the sludge and etc. as it goes over the brink on its way to the St. Lawrence seaway. And yes, the local government has long published lists of which fish to *DO NOT EAT* because they are now toxic.
Last time I touched it, it was indeed gray.

It may very well happen anyway, since IBM has Lanham Act counterclaims against SCO as soon as Novell is done.
Damn... not only did I *just* use up all my mod points, I also submitted a similar story just minutes before this one...
They left out teh goatse! And that has *got* to be the most-viewed page of all time!
Interpretation: SCO screwed themselves. If one has been following the case all along, this should be no surprise.

The conditions could be copyright law. That would be a good reply. Just because its being given away free of charge doesn't mean is is unrestricted.

Unfortunately society is rarely civil or ethical.
Sounds like you'd better email him.
I prefer plastic.
This is slashdot, all we have are a bunch of spideys. They too release a sticky white fluid via a wrist action.
Could be worse, I suppose... Imagine if his bum was really hairy.
I basically agree, but one thing to keep in mind: IBM is also a MS dealer.
No.

Instant meme, just add milk.
I've done Firefox on a Pentium Pro 200mHz with 128 megs and it does just fine. I compiled the tarball on slackware for it.
... am the great cornholio! I must obey my bumholio!

Hey walterbyrd (same one from GL?) what about doing *everything as plain ASCII txt ?

The "or" should have been "and" IMHO, and the last sentence of your first para. reflects this.
One look into the lgpl libraries two, remember that the fanboi thing is a relatively new phenomenon. Get out that asbestos underwear.
Much respect towards your sentiment (Upstate NY dutch here, of 300 yrs descent)
