    Actually, its been done before. Remember when we had a "stable" and an "unstable" pair? IMHO the idea of forking into desktop and server versions is a technical answer to a political problem with various developer's goals.

    How do you *think* distros happened 10 years ago? That's right, with FTP. Usually the distro would host a big FTP server and all the expenses of that. Others would peer or offer smaller servers in the case of wealthy individuals. And guess what? It worked just fine.

    The conditions could be copyright law. That would be a good reply. Just because its being given away free of charge doesn't mean is is unrestricted.

    Well, the way I see it, you get pretty much guaranteed attribution if you distribute by signing the copyrights to FSF. Sure, you can distribute on your own, but if attribution matters at all to you, then you are stuck with the hassle of ensuring it, instead of relying on the umbrella of the FSF and their attorneys (solicitors).

    In this way, I totally agree with the BSD-attribution and Creative Commons licenses, even though I prefer to use GNU software.

    IMHO if you are going to free your work, then attribution is the very least recompense that one could reasonably expect in a civil society.

    Unfortunately society is rarely civil or ethical.

    Interesting observation, I wonder if anybody has done any studies about this. Not to fear, I'm at least 4th generation USA and sometimes I still feel the limits of language patterns and culture. German and Scottish in my case.

    I've done Firefox on a Pentium Pro 200mHz with 128 megs and it does just fine. I compiled the tarball on slackware for it.

    Yes, I am aware of this situation - my own family is quite similar in some cases (grrr...). So I decided to take advantage of the relative lack of sophistication (no pun intended) and set all the send and recv default to plain txt and ask for other images/file types. Er, basically just so I could get some sleep.

    Anything downstream of it gets their water from it. This includes at least half a dozen states and possibly Canada AFAIK. I live near Niagara Falls and I'll be watching for the sludge and etc. as it goes over the brink on its way to the St. Lawrence seaway. And yes, the local government has long published lists of which fish to *DO NOT EAT* because they are now toxic.
