    Somewhere in the corner here I have Kaypro cp/m and DOS 2.1 on 5-1/4" disks...
    I recall very well that hard disks were for rich people, but I had to have one anyway. They were so convenient and fast...

    Excellent point, please mod this up for insightfulness again, someone! However, there's one key phrase in the blockquote I think we all need to pay more attention to... "digitally taping". I would assume this can also include other forms of digital recording. Unfortanately for all concerned, both my TV and my VCR are analog, so it may be a very moot point to me... and I live in NY.

    BTW I need to get a coffee too ;)

    er, perhaps I'm wrong but the last I checked (c.1986) the US *is* a representative republic, (democratically elected as the myth goes)(on paper, anyway...) and anyone who calls it a democracy either doesn't know what they;re talking about, or they know it very well and are "working the system"

    Actually I agree with you, it makes sense. It's just that my situation is entirely different, where I prefer large power and overdrive gears as the norm to cruise at 120 kph / 70 mph between cities and states, whichever you prefer... both are legal and affordable within my geographical range. In my experience for the terrain, a large torque and overdrive gearing is the best value... and if the lower gears just hapen to burn the tires, well, we may just have some fun too.

    hrrmmm.... interesting. Over the last 6 months I noted that most of my spam was coming from hotmail accounts...at least it's costing someone a fortune in bandwidth. The only reason I havent firewalled hotmail out completely is because some family members use it.

    Never say "It can't happen" because I just glanced at the list of charter members and supporting companies for RealNetworks Helix development community effort... and RH is one of them. For those who don't recall, Helix platform is a client/server combination for producing and publishing streaming content of all types, not just Real files. Oh, and BTW they're going to "open source" it all thru their development community...

    I dunno how this might help for real, but here's a bit of info: I don't even work in the IT industry, yet I face the same scenario on an almost daily basis. Hence, I conclude that the problem is probably more social or political than anything (assuming the co-workers can be proven competent in their fields). If not competent, then it's time to have a few words with your hiring dept., HR, or whatever you call them...

    Actually, you might be surprised; I simply withdrew from the marketplace altogether when I saw how these tings work, about a year after cd's came out. Yeah, I could afford to get whatever product type, but nowdays I prefer a good book...

    I've been following these issues offhand for a while now; I don't do p2p, I don't buy cd's or own a dvd player. I still own and use 12" LP records (70's hard rock, mostly).

    Now I'm PISSED!

    Just where do these glassholes think all that wonderful, money-saving software came from? I bet they're actually turning a profit on a few recent films and songs because of it.

    Moral of this little rant: be careful of who's toes you may be stepping on... because I CAN close my wallet even further. I would urge the rest of the community here to begin doing the same, immediately.

    Logic of this approach: The best way in the US to put pressure on a business or group is the financial way... since that's all they seem to pay attention to.
