As I am sure you all know, correlation does not imply causality.

There are plenty more distinguishing qualities between these locations. Who can say if lower crime is tied to the guns, population density, poverty levels, occupation, rural vs metro environments, or the presence of a professional football team. ;-)

Though I 'feel' it might be true that a criminal would be less likely to pull a gun if they thought the victim would have a gun, I also 'believe' that criminals do not always care about the consequences of their actions, or the concept of getting caught.

What I 'feel' and 'believe' are fine starting points, but dangerous end points.

  3. Re:IMHO Firefly sucked. on Firefly: A Special Feature · · Score: 3, Interesting

Like it or don't like it, thats for each person to decide. Firefly hooked me with the first episode aired in the us. Can you imagine anyone at starfleet running the badguy through a warp engine on purpose? The actors were settled in thier roles much better than any other first season show I know of. The characters backgrounds and motivations were hinted at just enough to make you want to know more about all of them. And when you found out more, it just made you want to find out even more. I actually don't watch shows much, and I certainly don't watch to reward 'innovation'. When I watch, I want entertainment. Sometimes that comes from novelty, sometimes familiarity. Sometimes lots of different things at the same time. The only thing I think sucked about firefly was its getting canned.

Whether its code that runs a pretty screen saver, powers your companies marketing, or bleeps out notes through your speakers, isn't it all the same? Could the recording studios sell a non-transferable license to the song, rather than a physical copy of the song itself? Or more likely, sell a license to use the song in a specific format on a specific media, in a specific country, for x uses, etc... I am not saying I like this, I am just wondering why it hasn't been done, or is it?

  6. Re:Let the Christian trolls roll on New Theory on Water Strider Propulsion · · Score: 1

I disagree. I would say that what you describe is not faith but trust. If you have some bit of proof, you are trusting that bit to hold you through the unknown. Religion exists in that unknown space where truth can not be grasped. We are getting off subject. Maybe someone will start a post about God and science where we can talk further.

  7. Re:Let the Christian trolls roll on New Theory on Water Strider Propulsion · · Score: 0, Troll

Belief in God requires Faith Faith is belief without proof or evidence Science is belief with proof and evidence Religion has its place, is very powerful, and has nothing to offer science but inherent bias.

  11. So many people miss the point on NYT on RFID Tags · · Score: 1

Most people don't care how a company tracks its products when they belong to the company. What we care about is how the product is tracked when it belongs to us. Sure, they collect purchase data and histories on us. But this system essentially ties our physical presence to the database of purchasing habits based on proximity, not on a sale. Sort of like a manditory national id card with gps built in. The path is sadly clear. In time, these will get implemented. The population might be concerned at first, but will quickly lose interest. The visible advantage of a speedier find/purchase will be more positive than the hidden potential for loss of privacy. It will be very easy to link the data and position together allowing the merchants to present you with plenty of spam you may or may not be interested in, all at very low cost per delivery. Think your inbox is full?

Thats called a credit card identification code. As long as they haven't worn off, they can be usefull. Vendors can also use address verification checks. Problem is, the more strict you are with these checks, the more false negative checks you get. The vendor must balance thier fraud tollerance against lost sales do to over complicated checks.
