    Haha. Thats quite the timer.
I think my least favorite labs were the one that used a "spark timer" that sparked 10 times per second and we accelerated a cart with the spark hitting a piece of "spark tape" as it went and then measured the distances between them. However, we did have some little cameras that hooked to the computer and we used "Videopoint" to do all of that stuff, that was pretty interesting.

  6. Re:Profit Margins ? on Hot-Rod Your CD-RW Drive · · Score: 1

As far as i knew, this isnt really the way that it was working. The reason that the upgrading firmware can make the drives faster, is because of changes they have made technologically since the other drive came out. Since about 24x, not much has changed as far as the actually hardware goes. However, the burning methods, as well as firmware stuff, has changed. One of the big changes in burning modes was going from ZLV (Zone linear velocity) to CAV or more commonly P-CAV (partial constant angular velocity). By doing this, and not changing the actual speed of the drive, the maximum speed reached as well as the average speed ended up being higher. It is just like when a video card manufacturer releases drivers that increase performance. However, in this realm they do not want everybody getting a 48x cdrw for "free" so they dont release the firmware across the board.
If it were the case that all of the drives were the same, they would've been selling 48x drives long ago, instead of doing 24, 32, 40, 48.
    Side note: supposedly lite-on has a 52x drive now. I have a lite-on 48x, maybe i can upgrade!

I tried mozilla, but opera feels faster, looks nicer, and has features that i enjoy more. The bar at the bottom that tells me how quickly pages are loading as well as the status of the page is really nice, hopefully more browsers will follow with that.

Mozilla still uses the same buttons from Netscape 2 it seems like! I think i have a "browser aversion" just due to the looks, so i didnt give it as much of a chance.

Tabbed browsing in opera is also very nice.

It has way more updates, more features, and overall it is faster for browsing. It does have a few problems dissplaying certain pages though. One thing it always does is underlines links even if the .css says not to, and the "buttons" on pages are never skinned (even delete etc in hotmail).

Computers in K-12 situations are for education use only. Downloading the newest screener or a gig of mp3's is not educational, even though it is quite fun
At my high school we originally had no internet, then ISDN, then T1 for the entire district, and people were always trying to run these programs.
If it is the teachers that are doing it, it's harder to monitor the computers because you cant make a script that deletes things that arent supposed to be on the computer, etc, but blocking all of the ports except for the necessary ones definitely will help. There arent that many ports needed to check email, surf the web, etc.
As was mentioned earlier, it can be a security issue and there should be polocies for both that as well as the educational use agreement. Teachers have to sign the agreement not to look at porn/do illegal things etc on school computers just as the students do in the local district here.

I agree that IE is the fastest and best browser around currently. I used to always download netscape back in the ie3 days, but now i havent found anything better. There are features that i do like about opera, etc, that i hope get integrated into IE.
