I don't think the question is nonsensical given the specifics mentioned. There might be others with experience who can say whether certain distribution make it easy to install certain software (math software in this case), among other things. Though it probably isn't true, I wouldn't be surprised if math majors and English majors, as a group, preferred different distrubutions.

I think one drawback is that many people who use free software in their professional lives use tools that are far superior to MS Word for writing documents, and these people never test OO.org and thus never give positive feedback to OO.org developers. When you know for certain that MS Word is useless for your endeavors, any app attempting to replace it will be considered really useless. I think people are mistaken when they claim OO.org will be the magic bullet that thrusts free software into the mainstream. Firefox already did it. But I think Gnumeric and Abiword have a much better chance than OO.org.

It's o.k. to pour antifreeze down drains, used or new (in USA). Antifreeze doesn't get mixed with anything in the car-- it just flows through the radiator. Unless your car leaks something into the coolant system, contaminants are minimal. Usually they just warn you about dumping antifreeze in driveways since dogs and cats find it tasty. Also, car repairs that require you to drain the antifreeze usually end with you filling the car with the same antifreeze. Unrelated, but incidentally, it's o.k. to put microwave ovens in dumpsters, since they have no hazardous materials either. You can check all this by calling you city's hazardous waste disposal unit.

In university, however, calculus is what is used to prove that you have what it takes to succeed in Discrete Mathematics or Matrix and Linear Algebra.

Unfortunately, calculus sometimes is a stumbling block to these (more interesting) classes, since calculus is really not a prerequisite for either (though in typical texts on linear algebra/discrete math/statistics they usually include calculus exercises). I think this is a reason some high schools started giving kids the option of taking statistics instead of calculus. I'd rather see everyone understand something about hypothesis testing (stuff you see on TV everyday) than integration techniques. And you only learn the really cool, interesting calculus when (if) you get to grad school.

How sad it would be if we didn't, as we watch the values of our "leaders" and "spokesmen" drift with the times. We don't need to license codecs if we can write our own. I can barely watch news videos on my Mac, because they're all in some dumb format, but are Macs behind, or becoming irrelevant? Free Software users do exactly the same thing Mac users do when confronted with codecs they can't play-- they ignore them. Why waste your time trying to play a clip if the owner makes it so difficult? Why buy a movie if you can't play it on your computer? (Movielink doesn't want money from Mac or Free Software users, so why should I give a shit?) When these "content providers" get around to wanting my money, they will bend. Otherwise, I'm fine keeping my money and spare time for better uses.
